CBS‘ time in paradise has come to an end. The network has cancelled NCIS: Hawai’i, so viewers won’t see a fourth season.
A police procedural drama series, the NCIS: Hawai’i TV series stars Vanessa Lachey, Alex Tarrant, Noah Mills, Yasmine Al-Bustami, Jason Antoon, Tori Anderson, and Kian Talan. LL Cool J is a special guest star. In the story, Jane Tennant (Lachey) is the first female Special Agent in Charge of NCIS Pearl Harbor. She has thrived and risen through the ranks by equal parts confidence and strategy in a system that has pushed back on her every step of the way. Her unwavering team of specialists includes junior field agent Lucy Tara (Al-Bustami); cyber intelligence specialist Ernie Malik (Antoon); second-in-command Jesse Boone (Mills); Defense Intelligence Agency Special Agent Kate Whistler (Anderson); and Kai Holman (Tarrant), a newer NCIS agent. They sometimes work with NCIS Senior Field Agent (Cool J) from Los Angeles. Tennant and her team balance duty to family and country while investigating high-stakes crimes involving military personnel, national security, and the mysteries of the island paradise itself.
Airing on Monday nights, the abbreviated third season of NCIS: Hawai’i averages a 0.35 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.24 million viewers. Compared to season two, that’s up by 1% in the demo and up by 4% in viewership in the live+same day ratings (includes DVR playback through 3:00 AM). It’s the network’s only scripted series to see growth year-to-year.
While the series outperformed other dramas that have been renewed, it was also likely more expensive to produce.
It’s also worth noting that CBS will have a very full schedule next season. The network renewed most of its current shows (including SWAT, which was supposed to end next month) and has committed to several new programs. Some of these were ordered for 2023-24 but were delayed due to last year’s industry strikes. New shows premiering for 2024-25 include Matlock, NCIS: Origins, Poppa’s House, Watson, and the Young Sheldon spin-off.
The 2024-25 season will be the first time CBS won’t have a Hawaii-based drama on the schedule in 14 years. The reboot of Hawaii Five-0 debuted in 2010 and ran until 2020. The reboot of Magnum PI began in 2018 and ran on CBS until 2022. NCIS: Hawai’i debuted in 2021.
The de facto series finale of NCIS: Hawai’i will air on May 6th. While the episode won’t give the series any closure, word is that viewers won’t be left with a big unresolved cliffhanger either.
What do you think? Have you been watching this Monday night series on CBS? Are you disappointed NCIS: Hawai’i was cancelled instead of renewed for a fourth season?
So sad they are cancelling Magnum, really loved that show & it had such a short run
I agree with Andy & Carolyn. Cancel NCIS Sydney. I don’t watch that one. It seemed fake to me. No offense to the actors. NCIS Hawaii is a very good show & has become very good recently with all the mystery & suspense now having added Sam Hannah. Please keep this show. Maybe move it to another night. I record it and watch it on Paramount Plus but if the app doesn’t work I have the recording as a backup.
You must try NCIS Sydney & thought it was interesting also. Nice cast even though they have different accents. The finale was something though in December I gotta tell you though. 4 great spinoffs of NCIS & it didn’t have to be moved actually, Mondays have been good & it’s been the highest rating at 10:00pm lately I’ve seen. They cancelled it because of the prices rising in Hawaii & that was just sad. I read the producers of Hawaii had to pay $75 million for each show & couldn’t believe it either. I wish it was saved though too.
Demographics is all wrong.
I started watching some shows like NCIS in my 30’s.
I am now well above the 49 years cut off point.
I think you are selling the older generation short and it’s age discrimination.
How can you claim to be inclusive whilst expressing ageism?
I agree with everyone that has issues with you cancelling this show. NCIS Hawaii is a very good show with good acting. If you’re going to cancel an NCIS, then cancel the Sydney one – poor acting in that one.
BRING BACK NCIS/HAWAII AND RENEW IT FOR SEVERAL MORE SEASONS . CANCEL ONE OF YOUR REALITY SHOWS OR ONE OR SEVERAL LOUSY COMEDY SHOWS.
I’m sorry to see NCIS Hawaii not renewed. It is a good show. I would much rather they let NCIS Sydney go. NCIS Hawaii has great characters and I love the show!
Paramount, psrent company of CBS, has three new leaders today. Call or write or go to change.org and ask the new leaders to reverse this decision.
Sad to see this one go like NCIS Los Angeles and yet I guess NCIS Sydney will probably show back up and it’s terrible! I really enjoyed Hawaii Five-O when it was on and I’ve enjoyed this NCIS Hawaii very much up until Sam came on the show and he just doesn’t fit with the regulars. CBS should reconsider this one like they did SWAT, another good show. Probably won’t though and it’s sad that they keep others.
CBS continues to cancel the good shows, their ratings will go down fast! Should never have cancelled NCIS: New Orleans and now you are letting Hawaii go. Get rid of NCIS: Sydney instead. Why is Blue Bloods being cancelled? You have done well with Tracker and Elsbeth. What’s next on your chopping block? Come on CBS get it together!!
I will miss all the Hawaii series shows, too bad they are leaving
Aloha to this 3rd rate insult to us who live in Hawai’i. NCIS Hawai’i was horribly written, acted, and directed. The episodes were troubling with their over attention to characters’ sexual preferences and the “usual suspects” level of “Save the World” plots loaded with explosions and violence. The “Jane Tennant” character was just plain unbelievable. Watching this show made Hawai’i look like a very dangerous place with stupid people. It will not be missed.
Please do not cancel NCIS HAWAII. It is one of my favorites
This is the worst news I’ve ever gotten on a TV show. I cannot believe that you’re canceling NCIS Hawaii. Such a good acting such good stories. The interaction between the cast is so good. Please consider keeping it.
Please, please, please, dont cancel NCIS Hawaii !!! I would be heart broken. Why does CBS always cancel the excellant shows we love to watch. I’m about ready to watch just movies. At least they dont get canceled, but it shouldn’t have to go that far. Please reconsider and keep NCIS Hawaii airing on CBS!!
CBS continues its race to the bottom in canceling successful loved shows. However I will say that the new show Elsbeth is amazing. Now i fear they will just cancel it.
