New Amsterdam has lost one of its series regulars — actor Anupam Kher has departed the NBC series. It was revealed on Tuesday night’s episode that his Dr. Vijay Kapoor character had resigned from his position at the hospital. Kher has portrayed Dr. Kapoor since the series premiered in 2018.
His exit was announced only days after the actor revealed his wife, actress Kirron Kher, has a rare form of blood cancer. He said the following, per Deadline:
“Kirron has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. She is currently undergoing treatment and we are sure she will come out of this stronger than before. We are very blessed that she is being looked after by a phenomenal set of doctors.”
Ryan Eggold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, and Tyler Labine star in the drama which follows the lives and work of the staff of New Amsterdam Medical Center. New Amsterdam airs on Tuesday nights on NBC. The series has already been renewed through season five by the network.

Yes I Will miss seeing Dr. Vija Kapoor on the show. I really enjoyed his character.
My favorite character on the show. I initially thought this was just for one episode and he’d be back. So sad when he didn’t show up to his welcome back party. Iggy will miss him. His many fans will miss him. Praying for a quick recovery for his wife and a d happy return to New Amsterdam.

I was so sad that he “resigned”… he will be greatly missed. I am heartbroken about his wife’s condition and wish him and his family the best in the future.
I love Dr. Kapoor. I love the actor. I have seen him in “Silver Linings Playbook,” and another movie where he is a social worker. My heart goes heart to him and his wife. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery and a return of Dr. Kapoor!!

Dr.Kapoor was such a stabilizing rational adult in the room for the staff & patients. I do hope his wife survives her cancer & treatment. It would be great to be able to bring him back at that point.
This is literally my favorite show on television right now, and Vijay Kapoor was one of my faves, if I could even choose one. He will be missed but sending prayers for his wife and entire family ♥️
