In its first season, despite having NBC’s biggest scripted series, This Is Us, as a lead-in, the ratings for the New Amsterdam series dropped pretty low. It was still renewed for a second season. Will the numbers improve in year two or, drop even lower? Will New Amsterdam be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
A medical drama series, New Amsterdam stars Ryan Eggold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher, and Tyler Labine. Doctor Max Goodwin (Eggold) is a caring physician whose goal is to fix a broken medical system and to provide exceptional care to the people who need it most. He inspires (almost) everyone around him, and will stop at nothing to breathe new life into the understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated New Amsterdam Medical Center. Those working with Goodwin include Dr. Lauren Bloom (Montgomery), the head of the ER; oncologist Dr. Helen Sharpe (Agyeman); cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Sims); psychiatrist Dr. Iggy Frome (Labine); and Dr. Vijay Kapoor (Kher), head of the Neurological Department.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
4/15 update: You can see the latest night’s ratings in context.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: The first season of New Amsterdam on NBC averaged a 1.06 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.92 million viewers.
Note: These are the final national numbers (unless noted with an “*”). These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.
What do you think? Do you like the New Amsterdam TV series on NBC? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a third season?
*1/11/20 update: NBC has renewed New Amsterdam for three additional years — seasons three, four, and five — which will take it through the 2022-23 television season.
This is a great show. The characters are excellent and the stories are heartwarming. Just what we need today.
My friends and I in the 18-49 love this show. We smile and cry every week. But most of us dvr or stream it on Hulu. Due to the fact we are busy with kids and nightly activities. I don’t know who decides what stays and what goes but so many good quality shows have been taken away. I do not tweet and social media anything and will not start. If that is how a show stays on that’s wrong. American tv is declining in its form and content. I have started watching more BBC in the last few years.… Read more »
I love New Amsterdam and so does a friend of mine.
Love the show hate I miss the new season so far. I will be watching Tuesday night.
I simply love, love, love this series! It is a show that I always record. Please give us more! I’m telling all my friends.
Merry Christmas!!
Please renew this series. I never miss an episode. Good Soldiers episode was heart breaking. Masterfully done. I watched it twice!
My husband and I can hardly wait for each episode. This is an intelligent, well-scripted program. Leave it on the air! We love these characters, and the program treats the viewers like we have a brain in our heads. New Amsterdam, YES!!
Love love love this show. Has interest and compassion. Please don’t cancel.
New Amsterdam is the
Singular best show on network, cable or streaming television. A show that finally brings hope in a world that is quite literally hopeless in so many ways. This show deserves a third season and more. I hope without question that someone makes a brave and courageous decision. America needs New Amsterdam.
I so very much enjoy New Amsterdam… please continue to keep us entertained with this well written show. The actors are so good. I look forward to every new episode to see what new adventure they have in store for us!!
New Amsterdam show…. one if the best medical shows. All the actors gel well as a team and relarelationally. Look forward to every Tuesday evening to see the best!! The episodes written well about people and doctors helping them. Bravo to the actors, writers and NBC !!
I really like the show, but the drum music in Season 2, Episode 2 was very distracting. Please lose the music. Otherwise please renew.
Please do not cancel the show because I really like it
I started watching because I liked Ryan Eggold in Blacklist. Obviously, this is a completely a different kind of genre from that so I don’t always find every episode compelling. I usually tape and watch later. Only time will tell if it maintains an audience.
Both my husband and I are physicians. We enjoy New Amsterdam, not for the medical content, but for the diverse characters and underlying theme of goodness and hope that comes through in each episode. It is well-acted; please renew it for another season. We typically record our shows and watch them another night (I’m not sure if that gets counted towards the viewership).
