We’ve received quite a few e-mails from readers who are been worried that Parenthood has been cancelled by NBC. Well, it hasn’t been canned and will actually be returning on January 4th. That’s the good news but fans shouldn’t get too complacent. The drama hasn’t been performing all that well and certainly isn’t assured of a third season.
Last May, Parenthood was one of those shows that was “on the bubble” but still ended up being renewed. Though season one premiered with a 3.1 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 8.1 million viewers, it soon after dropped to a 2.3 rating and 5.83 million viewers. The 13 episodes of season one ended up averaging a 2.6 in the demo and 6.38 million total viewers.
For season two, Parenthood debuted at about the same demo rating it had at the end of season one. Unfortunately, that didn’t last. In mid-November, shortly before it went on hiatus, Parenthood hit a series low of a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demo and 4.8 million viewers.
The first half of the season has averaged a 2.1 in the demo and 5.22 million. Parenthood is currently the seventh-highest rated scripted program on the network, falling in the middle of the list, just below The Event. While it’s not in immediate danger of being cancelled, the show’s certainly not safe either. Its fate will ultimately be decided by how well it performs when it returns from the six week hiatus. Most shows don’t typically fare very well and ratings drop after a hiatus. Will Parenthood be the exception?
What do you think? Will the ratings for Parenthood go up or down? Will it be cancelled or survive to see season three?

This is my favorite show since Thirty Something. Please don’t cancel it. I LOVE these characters. This is the best show on television!
Please don’t cancel this show. It is so realistic and reminds me of my extended family. The characters are blending so well. Favorite show!!!
keep it on, best show ever!
with all of the trashy shows on TV it’s hard to imagine why this one would go….hope it doesn’t get canceled!!! This season is even betterr than last.
Hi… This is my SECOND plea NOT to cancel this cleverly written show !! If the network would be consistent in showing Parenthood in the weekly format that was originally promised, there is an excellent possibility that the viewership will be consistent, as well. A earlier time slot may aid in retaining a more dedicated audience. PLEASE…my favorite shows appear on NBC…including the delightful, ” Harry’s Law”, with the always-entertaining, Kathy Bates. So many networks bow to the mentality of goof-ball comedies, with no clear message, nor substance in the scripting. AND…the AWFUL laugh-tracks…!! I KNOW what makes ME laugh…I… Read more »
Parenthood as had a “difficult” timeslot for this season, especially… honestly, I try hard to schedule to watch it on the television, but I thank God you have this show available online… too bad you’re not concentrating on the hits you get there… or are you? This show has just gotten better with every episode… kinda like the old days, when a program was allowed to develop into a classic… like, I believe, this is… I’m definitely going to add the series to my DVD collection. Thank you.
We love this show…We have it set to DVR whenever it comes on due to the fact that it’s on inconsistently (we get excited when we see a commercial that it’s actually going to be on this week but, you can’t keep people’s interest if you’re only on every other week or less. In this era, it’s painful enough to have to wait for your favorite shows for a week and stay interested let alone to extend that to 2 weeks or 6 weeks as you’ve done several times this season). The programmers are killing this show and it’s really… Read more »
Parenthood is easily the most sophisticated and well written show on TV.
My wife and i Love this show! its brilliantly perplex.
Another terrific show being preempted and deferred…what a shame. I always talk about boycotting, but if this show is cancelled, that’s it for my family and NBC.
I love Parenthood. The big problem is that it always seems to be pre-empted for one reason or another. It is as though it is always sacrificed so some other “special” or “event” can air. The ratings go down because the viewers can never count on being able to watch it.
Keep it on. Talk about reality TV. This is much more realistic than shows like Survivor.
I know that my wife and I are not your target market but we have been faithful to NBC most of our lives. We have suffered through some really awful seasons with the hope that something better would replace the really insufferable shows broadcast. It seems now you have adopted the philosophy of catering to the lowest common denominator. The latest rumor that Parenthood is on the chopping block is too much to endure. The show is fun, intelligent and we can actually learn something. Hopefully, the decision makers will give us some glimmer of hope by continuing to run… Read more »
MY FAVORITE SHOW BY FAR!!!! Please do not cancel this SHOW! No other show like it!
This is by far the best family show on television, when there is not much else worth watching. The situations are real-life issues that every family is confronted with, and the program depicts such honesty and discipline and honr among the family members!
It is a successful show without steamy sex and obscene language.
The actors are perfectly cast, in my opinion., and they are excellent.
The ratings would surely be much higher if it aired at an earlier hour for young and old alike, to enjoy. Please do not cancel this wonderful show.
Please do not cancel this show. It is the ONE bright spot in the whole week of TV programming.
