The Avengers aired on British television back in the 1960s. The series was on the air for six seasons before it was cancelled. One of the stars of the series, Diana Rigg, wants the networks to leave The Avengers alone.
With so many remakes and reboots in the works, it is tempting for networks to revisit old series from the past that did really well. The Avengers is one of those series.
Bryan Fuller has already called The Avengers his dream project, and he would want Eddie Izzard to play John Steed. Fuller just ended his time with Hannibal, which was cancelled by NBC after three seasons.
Digital Spy shared Rigg’s comments about a potential reboot.
“I think the message is over and done with, and it’s move-on time, don’t you think?”
Would you want a reboot of The Avengers? Would you watch? Do you think Rigg’s comment can be applied to other planned revivals in the works? Tell us what you think.
Well if it will be rebooted , in honor of the late Dame Diana Rigg, let Natalie Dormer played that part of Emma Peel
If ever Dame Diana Rigg agreed that The Avengers to be rebooted, the best actress to play the part of Emma Peel should be Natalie Dormer, the actress who played Margery Tyrell in Game of Thrones and the granddaughter of Olena Tyrell who happens to be played by Diana Rigg in that series
The Avengers became a hit on ABC in USA because of Patrick Magnee and Diana Rigg I couldn’t wait for it on Friday night then it crashed when Diana Rigg left and unknown Linda Thorson came in we stopped watching on Linda Thorson’s second episode….because we wanted Mrs. Peel not Tara King
I was a big fan of the Avengers and I have some mixed feelings about a reboot. I don’t think it’s impossible, but I’m not sure it would be worth the effort. The show was written in the 1960’s during a cultural revolution and some of what made the show ‘special’ is the time period. If the 18 – 49 demographic can’t relate to the 1960’s (along with the cultural references and surreal moments) then the show won’t make it. If it’s brought into the modern era, it would become a different show. That may not be a bad thing… Read more »
I agree with Ms Rigg. Why does Hollywood feel the need to reboot classic shows that the audience will probably not watch if they were fans of the original? I can’t think of anyone who could compare to the talents of Patrick Macnee or Honor Blackman, let alone Diana Rigg. Just please give it a rest. Let a classic remain a classic.
If Hollywood is that starved for creative ideas, I’d rather see an Avengers remake than something trite or unoriginal. But the remake would have to preserve the quality of the original series, its writing, and casting. Any degradation in these would lose the existing fans and likely not spark much new interest. Seriously, no one could replace Diana Rigg and Patrick Macnee. But maybe they could be updated. I wasn’t expecting much of the remakes for Bond and Star Trek. But both were quite pleasant surprises. Maybe this guy can do the same for the Avengers and give the program… Read more »
I agree with the other comments and let the wonderful show we all watched back in the day RIP.
“The series was on the air for six seasons before it was cancelled.”
It ran for nine seasons, 1961-69, not counting a one-season prequel series called “Police Surgeon.”
As for a reboot… What an awful idea. The show captured something unique for its time, and a chemistry between Patrick Macnee and his various partners (Honor Blackman, Diana Rigg, and even Linda Thorson), neither of which can be recaptured. Let honored series rest in peace and come up with something original.
I believe it ran for six seasons across that many years. In some cases there was a year or more between the end of one season and the start of the next.
No, he is right as he included the two seasons from the series sequel which star Joanna Lumley and Gareth Hunt
Let us keep the original Avengers in our minds. Mixed a little mystery, humor and martial arts in a delightful way that can never be duplicated. It was a fabulous show. New producers will never and cannot ever appreciate this wonderful 60’s show. They will just screw it up.
I enjoyed the original “Avengers” and would not like to see it remade. I didn’t even like it as much when Diana Rigg left the series, and I don’t think a recasting would be successful. The program was what it was in its time. I agree with those who say leave it alone. I would not watch a remake.
I remember watching the Avengers when I was growing up and really liked the show, I don’t see what the big deal is about a remake.. Yes I would watch it..
Agree with all the comments before mine. When they tried a remake in movie form, it was excruciating to watch. I forced myself to stay till the end of the movie at the theater because I paid for the ticket. The Avengers is iconic, and no actor of present day can do justice to it today. Leave it alone!!
I agree, stop making all these remakes. But how do know no present actor can do it justice. Have met them all. Sometimes it’s the script’s fault. But you and Judy know it all though.
I adored The Avengers but feel the focus of casting directors is more geared to finding fashion models than quality actors/actresses. Sadly the writers of today have thoroughly butchered many popular classic shows by completely missing the original premise or concept of the original show and trying to make everything racially integrated and politically correct when the original idea calls for a particular background or appearance. Dame Smith & Dame Dench are awesome mom/grandmother figures for narrating or reminiscing about a historically set story while Hallie Barry, who is admittedly beautiful, does not have the experience or stage presence to… Read more »
“Hollywood” can make these fair racially without doing what you said. I would rather have original stories/characters of people of color instead of changing a character and having y’all hate on use because of “Hollywood’s” doing. Let the show stay dead.
I see no mention of Hallie Barry in this article
I agree with the previous comment. Stop making remakes of the old shows we liked and loved. The writer of the previous comment also said that the casting agents will not be able to find the RIGHT PEOPLE, because the RIGHT PEOPLE were picked almost 50 years ago.
STOP MAKING REMAKES of the shows we loved over the years. The original actors cannot be replaced by many of the actors today.
I would like to see the avengers again but finding the right actors to play the part that’s the difficult part especially ones that are anywhere near as good as the originals look at how bad they did trying to remake the Adams family or Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory I felt that movie was an insult
For those of us who grew up in the 60″s the Avengers was a fantasy version of that time period (never dealt with contempory issues). The subject matter in most of the episodes were way , way ahead of its time. So in order to do a remake not only do you need to fine the right combination of actors but scripts that also have subject matter that is 30 years ahead of its time.
