Uhtred of Bebbanburg and his adventures are coming to an end with year five. The Netflix historical drama series, The Last Kingdom, is coming to a close so, there won’t be a sixth season. The streaming service hasn’t announced a release date for the final installments as yet.
The Last Kingdom stars Alexander Dreymon, Emily Cox, Ian Hart, Joseph Millson, Mark Rowley, Toby Regbo, Millie Brady, James Northcote, Adrian Bouchet, Ewan Mitchell, Timothy Innes, Magnus Bruun, Jamie Blackley, Richard Dillane, Finn Elliott, Ruby Hartley, Nigel Lindsay, Dorian Lough, Stefanie Martini, Steffan Rhodri, and Eysteinn Sigurðarson. An adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s novel series, The Saxon Stories, the historical drama follows Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Dreymon), the son of a 9th Century Saxon nobleman. After killing his father, Danish invaders kidnap the boy and he is raised by their warlord, Ragnar. Years later, when Ragnar is killed, Uhtred vows to avenge him and reclaim his birthright. In season four, as Edward and Aethelflaed spar over the future of Mercia and their father’s dream of a united England, Uhtred tries to recover his lost birthright.
The series debuted on BBC Two in the UK in 2015 and the first season aired on BBC America in the United States. Netflix became its official home in 2018.
According to Deadline, Carnival Films, which produces Last Kingdom, confirmed that the series is coming to a close with season five. The cast and crew are currently filming the final 10 episodes in Hungary and they will be based on the ninth and 10th books in Cornwell’s 13-part series.
Dreymon will make his directorial debut by helming an episode in the final season. Andy Hay, Paul Wilmshurst, Anthony Philipson, and Jon East will also direct installments. Cast additions for season five include Patrick Robinson, Sonya Cassidy, and Harry Gilby.

Very surprised there will not be a season 6. Other shows on Netflix go on for much longer and are no where near as good. It does not make sense!

Last Kingdom is the only show/series I’ve ever taken the time to make a posting about but since I don’t tweet or even Facebook, I’d guess this post won’t account for much but here it goes anyway. Historical content all balled up with impressive dialogue, acting and scenery. If fans knew Netflix was gonna chop The Last Kingdom off at its knees, maybe we should have rallied our teens to tweet, Instagram, tick tock or whatever, just so our opinion would matter. Extremely disappointed they at least wouldn’t do a season 6 to finish it properly. Best series on any network for 2 decades.
Having read Cornwell’s Saxon Chronicles series, which came to an end, IMHO The Last Kingdom also has to come to an end. So – Season 5 will see Uhtred finally achieving some well-deserved peace. After all, the Hobbits ended – books and movies. If we can survive that we can survive anything. Fate is All.. PS. Noooooo! I love this show.. I can’t believe a show this great is ending when so many other out there stay on well past their prime! Why?
It’s awful when you come across a show that you love after binge watching it. Netflix is notorious for pulling great shows or movies, just like HBO does. As a paying custmer I’m annoyed by this news.
Love the show, but the last season was a little weak in my opinion compared to previous ones. Especially the villain from this last season who is more brains than brawn type of viking.
I like when the chunky viking shows up season after season, he will outlast them all I think.

My very most favorite show . I watch it over and over when waiting for new. Guess I will have to now. So dissappointed..
