The Queen’s Gambit wrapped after one season on Netflix in November, but viewers have been hoping for more of chess prodigy Beth Harmon’s story. The series has been very successful for the streaming service so, could there be a second season in the works?
Executive producer William Horberg released a statement after the series received two Golden Globe nominations (one for Limited Series and the other for Anya Taylor-Joy as the Best Actress in a Limited Series) and he made it clear a second season will not happen. He said the following about the Netflix series, per Deadline:
“It’s wonderful to know that people loved the show where they want to spend more time with these characters; we never envisioned it that way. We felt that the series had a satisfying endpoint and we’d allow the audience to fill in the space as to what happens next for Beth Harmon. Nothing has changed, despite fans demanding more on my Twitter feed. Scott and I feel really happy about the completeness of Beth’s story.”
The Queen’s Gambit was watched by 62 million viewers in its first month on Netflix, making it the streaming service’s “biggest scripted limited series to date”.
What do you think? Did you watch The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix? Would you have watched a second season?
It’s possible that to be the actual, “true chess champion” of the universe, Beth should have to get married (unhappily), get more addicted to (and then recover from) drugs, interact with more abusive and supportive people, and play more chess . . . while wearing lots of cool outfits and having more sex.
Hence an incredibly disappointing 2nd Season.
Please, please do not make a second season. This was a wonderful show and it’s ending was perfect. Was there a sequel to Citizen Kane? Do not fall prey to the draw of the mighty dollar and tarnish this gem with a made up second season.
I totally would have watched a second season of Queen’s Gambit. It’s OK they are not doing another one just means more of Bridgerton and Virgin River woohoo.
Absolutely one of the best series ever made. I’ve watched it five times all the way through and then sometimes I re-watch different episodes. I am thrilled there is no second season planned. This masterpiece stands alone, as it should! Thank you, Netflix, for not caving to the demands for another season.
The Queen’s Gambit was great. If there is a second season I would watch it, but I don’t think there should be a second season. The story ended as it should have. I look forward to seeing more productions featuring Anya Taylor-Joy.
It ended perfectly! Why ruin it by going into some long, winding story that eventually causes the majority of people to lose interest. Always leave them wanting more.
I would watch it simply because that young lady is a magnificent actor, and it was SUCH a wonderful show. However, I agree that it was done SO well that it would almost be sacrilegious to add (change?) anything. I know, I’m a COMPLETE dichotomy.
Disappointed in there being no season 2. I feel like there is more of Beth’s story to be told. Reconsider!
As much as I love the show, the old saying always leave them wanting more fits here. As a tournament chess player myself, I wish Beth the best
Yes!!! I absolutely loved Queen’s Gambit and even by the time I made it to the 4th episode… I knew I wanted a season 2!! I really hope they change their minds cause they could do so much on another season!
I loved the Queens Gambit. It did have a wonderful ending and Beth Harmons story seemed complete and nicely tied up but I would like to see her end up happy and with the character that loved her so much, yet still be independent.
This was the best show ever. If Netflix will not produce a second season, I am very tempted to cancel my Netflix account.
Really?!?! Cancel Netflix because the writer and producer don’t want to compromise their values, write a second-rate sequel and make a quick buck by doing what most Hollywood types do all the time? I applaud them.
I felt that way when I couldn’t find “Citizen Kane II” on Amazon Prime.
Yes I watched the Queens gambit and thoroughly enjoyed it. It would be great if there was a second season
I’d like to see a series about either Jolene or Townes in that sixties environment.
Yes great mini series have watched multiple times. Would watch season 2.
