What’s This TV Show About?
Airing on the BBC America cable channel, The Watch is inspired by the Discworld novels by Sir Terry Pratchett. The cast includes Richard Dormer, Lara Rossi, Adam Hugill, Marama Corlett, Jo Eaton-Kent, Wendell Pierce, Samuel Adewunmi, Matt Berry, Anna Chancellor, and Bianca Simone Mannie, with James Fleet, Ralph Ineson, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Paul Kaye, Ruth Madeley, and Ingrid Oliver. Set in the fictional Discworld’s principal city of Ankh-Morpork, the story follows an unlikely group of misfits called The City Watch. They are forced to find the courage to save the world and surprise even themselves in the process. The series pits trolls, werewolves, wizards, and other improbable heroes against an evil plot to resurrect a great dragon which would lead to the destruction of life as they know it. Characters include leader Sam Vimes (Dormer); the last scion of nobility, Lady Sybil Ramkin (Rossi); naïve but heroic Constable Carrot (Hugill); mysterious Corporal Angua (Corlett); ingenious forensics expert Constable Cheery (Eaton-Kent); and the voice of Death (Pierce).

Telly’s Take
Will BBC America cancel or renew The Watch for season two? It’s difficult to know what BBCA and AMC Networks consider to be a success when it comes to viewership. However, given that this show is based on a series of books and they’re trying to build the newly launched AMC+ streaming service, I think that it will likely be renewed. I’ll update this page with breaking developments. Subscribe for free alerts on The Watch cancellation or renewal news.

What do you think? Do you hope The Watch TV show will be renewed for a second season? How would you feel if BBC America cancelled this TV series, instead?
I really didn’t expect to enjoy this show even half as much as I did, and now I’m nearly desperate to hear it’s been renewed! After watching the first two episodes, I was so pleasantly surprised that I had to stream the episodes again with my husband; we try to find a show each season that we can both enjoy and share each week, and The Watch is our newest weekly TV date night show. The comedy is truly comedic, there’s a charm to each character, and I’ve fallen in love with them all. If there’s not a second season,… Read more »
Love Pratchett’s writing and think this is a great adaptation and he would love how quirky and weird they have made his world.
Er – no he wouldn’t. Pratchett would be looking at this and thinking “Where’s my dialogue? Where are my characters? Where is my plot? Who are these arrogant people that think that they know better that someone who has sold 70 million books?” The most telling thing, in my opinion, is that Rhianna Pratchett and the family trust have disavowed it, and have completely withdrawn any cooperation for any future adaptations by BBC America.
The Watch is great it’s so different and quirky.
I love how the characters are all misfits and become a family. Plus it has dragons, weir wolfs ,vampires and trolls that should be reason enough to renew!
I’m looking forward seeing what season 2 will bring!
I love the Watch. It is imaginative, funny, exciting and original.
The sooner this abomination is cancelled and forgotten and the sooner someone COMPETENT can have a go at adapting some of the most beloved Discworld stories, the better. Bloody Stupid Simon had the balls to announce to fans his series would be a proper adaptation on a con, to then deliver THIS… And forget casting, costume or set designs (which all had their problems too), THE BIGGEST SIN the series made was to remove every single original dialogue – some of the funniest material written – to replace it with completely new jokes that at the best of times come… Read more »
My Wife & I love the show. Bring it back!
Definitely bring the Watch back love the show. Yes it is a different interpretation of Ankh Morpok and the books but really like what they did. I have all of the discworld movies that were made in the past picked them up on trips to London.
Please, kill this monstrosity of a show
The ratings tell the tale, The Watch is poorly scripted, poorly acted and looks like crap. It’s based on a much loved series of books with a huge number of fans, which have been entirely alienated by the treatment of the source material. That means that a third-rate, charmless production has to win over an entirely new audience who have no prior knowledge of Terry Pratchett’s work. It has to be the worst business decision ever made by any producer in history. Once the author’s family disavowed the treatment, this project was doomed and continuing it is… mad.
I have read the books and you do make valid points but its mindless entertainment, I enjoyed it but your points do stand. it is a shoddy story but it could have been so much worse.
That’s the problem: the Discworld wasn’t mindless entertainment. It was nuanced and intelligent and warm. To paper over that with a faux punk aesthetic is an insult to notbonly the story bit to the fans who loved it.
Loved this show and the characters. I’ve read a lot of complaints about its departures from the source material, but as a lover of Pratchett’s books I was fine with a different interpretation. The actors are uniformly great and fully committed to the madness, which was fun to watch. Really hoping for a second season.
I’m fully with you on this and it’s so refreshing to find like-minded fans of Discworld that can enjoy interpretations on it’s own merits.
The Watch was the most entertaining programming I’ve seen in a long time. PLEASE bring it back. Please, please, please
Absolutely loved The Watch! Adaptions of Terry Pratchett’s works are so fun, happy and magical. More please?!
I LOVE this show. I really hope that it is renewed. Fixes my Sunday blues knowing that it’s going to be on.
