Last week, NBC cancelled the Timeless TV show, and then on Saturday, reversed the decision and renewed the time travel drama for a second season. And guess what? The fans’ outcry inspired the Peacock Network to come to terms with Sony Pictures Television on Timeless, season two.
Timeless, which stars Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, Malcolm Barrett, and Goran Visnjic, was considered a “borderline” show by NBC, because of its middling broadcast ratings. At first, the network and Sony could not agree, where money was concerned. However, when they saw the huge outcry from fans, in wake of the Timeless cancellation, both parties made it work.
Deadline reports:
“We loved the show creatively hoping for it to have bigger numbers in the fall,” [NBC Chair Bob] Greenblatt said on Sunday. When the network executives convened to discuss its 2017-18 lineup, the questions surrounding Timeless, considered a “borderline” series, were “Can it grow, and do we have place for it”, Greenblatt said. “There was a moment earlier in the week where we said, we have all these shows coming back, new shows. Maybe there is no space (for Timeless). We decided to move away from it.”
Greenblatt and NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke were “heartbroken” when they delivered the news to creators Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke on Wednesday afternoon, as Ryan noted.
Here is what happened next as described by Greenblatt on the NBC upfronts call Sunday.
“And then we woke up the next morning, heard the outcry (from fans). We went back to the drawing board, with our partners at Sony, and we found a way to bring it back. It’s extraordinarily well produced and deserved to come back.”
By Thursday morning, fans’ reaction to the cancellation of Timeless had reached fever pitch, with them rallying to save the show while Sony TV was trying to find a new home for the series on a cable or streaming network.
I hear the core group that worked on making the renewal possible at NBC included Greenblatt, Salke and head of current programming Vernon Sanders.
“We love the show, we just said, let’s figure out a way to bring it back,” Salke said. “We proposed something, they accepted and 40 minutes later Shawn and Eric were tweeting about it,” she said.
That would be the Saturday 10 AM PT joint announcement by Ryan and Kripke on Twitter.
It is unclear whether there was any back-and-forth between NBC and Sony TV over these less-than-72 hours between the cancellation and renewal but I hear that may not have been the case. From what I understand, Timeless will return for a 10-episode second season at the same budget, as exactly the same show and not a low-cost version of it. And NBC executives’ decision may have been driven entirely by listening to what their viewers want and fulfilling their wishes, with no financial strings attached to the renewal.
What do you think? Are you happy that NBC decided to renew Timeless for a second season? Do you plan to watch?
great…how during the 8 PM time slot. Forget the stupid musical and the negative ego producing “voice, dance etc shows”
Happy.
I’m and my hubby are ecstatic Timeless will be back…ECSTATIC. thank you NBC Class act.
Very happy that they reversed the decision. We will watch every week. THANK YOU FOR BRINGING IT BACK.
So excited that Timeless is coming back! Love the show!
I’m happy to see fans have a voice, it’s nice to see we matter
I’m. Happy. Thank you So much
Sooo glad that NBC and SONYcould come to an agreement and bring back one of the best shows on tv!!! It’s such a great, entertaining, suspenseful show that also has some education weaved in instead of mindless reality shows!!!! Thank you, Thank you, thank you for bringing back a stellar show!!!!
I totally agree with you, Tara. I love the educational value and am over mindless reality shows!!
I’m absolutely stunned at NBC reversal. Generally they show little interest in what the public likes (let alone a outcry) when a shows’ numbers do not meet the threshold they set when premiering. This reversal decision is a win/win for the network, production company, cast and most importantly the loyal fan base who didn’t hesitate to express their disappointment. Kudos to the NBC brass for stepping back after hearing the outcry of the fan base, and finding a solution. Let’s hope more viewers tune in next season to avoid a similar decision needing to be made.
I am thrilled that NBC is bringing back Timeless. I was very disappointed when I heard it was cancelled. Hearing that they have reversed their decision is GREAT news. !!!!!!
So, so glad NBC reversed their decision. This is a quality show and it deserves the chance to grow. It is a family show of which there are too few of these days. My family and I look forward to next season!
So happy!! Thank you for giving us a second season! I can’t wait to see it!
So happy! Thanks for listening NBC!!!
I am thrilled, this is the first time the networks listened to the fans. And when are they going to learn that the method they use for determining the popularity of a program is archaic and fix this outrage before we loss any more worthwhile programs?
thanks nbc
