What’s This TV Show About?
Airing on the TNT cable channel, The Alienist stars Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, Dakota Fanning, Brian Geraghty, Douglas Smith, Matthew Shear, Matt Lintz, Robert Ray Wisdom, and Q’orianka Kilcher. Set in 1896 in New York City, the mystery drama centers on Laszlo Kreizler (Brühl), an alienist, i.e. a criminal psychologist. When a ritualistic serial killer starts targeting boy prostitutes, Police Commissioner Teddy Roosevelt (Geraghty) drafts Kreizler to head up his secret investigation into the murders.
Season One Ratings
The first season of The Alienist averaged a 0.41 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.77 million viewers. Learn how The Alienist stacks up against other TNT TV shows.
The Alienist ended after one season but TNT later ordered a sequel series called The Angel of Darkness. The channel has since decided that Angel of Darkness is now the second season of The Alienist and it debuts July 19, 2020. Stay tuned for further updates.
Telly’s Take
Although it premiered with very good numbers for a cable drama, the ratings have been dropping pretty quickly. Will TNT cancel or renew The Alienist for season two? 6/13/18 update: Cast members have confirmed that the series ended with one season, though they’d be open for a second season. Details here.

5/21/20 update: TNT has changed the title of the sequel series to The Alienist: The Angel of Darkness and is treating it like a second season.

I hope there is a season 2. I read the book and enjoyed the season 1 depiction. Love the characters!!!
I love this show and hope it is renewed. It is a great depiction of the time period with the actors all doing great work with their characters. Given the absolute rubbish being offered on TV today, this is a gift to viewers who like a great character driven story. It is intense and dark to be sure but a well crafted story.
I , too, hope it continues. I am fascinated by it and I am quite fussy. Very well done and I hope they see fit for at least another season.
Totally agree Michael. I never thought my husband would like the show (thought he was just watching to humor me) but we both feel enriched after watching each week.
This is a very well written and suspenseful adaption of Caleb Carr’s Book. I would love to both The Angel of Darkness and Surrender New York be adapted for Season 2.
Love this series! So intrigued by the era and storyline. Nice to see something different than Vampires and stupid comedies that have no substance. This show has created conversation between my husband and I which I love. My wish is that when deciding to renew or not is that they, whomever, will consider all these comments and keep series going! Kinda nice to go back in time!!

Love the show!!!!! Hoping for season 2
I like the show and hope it is renewed assuming the child killer currently being sought hasn’t be found by the conclusion of this season.
My husband & I love this series. Please continue this series. Take different social issues with medical problems in that era, for the alienist can work on. Find it refreshing and a very different story
Fascinating
There is a high chance it will be renewed since this show has second best ratings on TNT right now. Hopefully it will stay that way.
Definitely would LOVE to see many more seasons. The characters and their development are wonderful and they work together so well. The next Kreizler novel is Angel Of Darkness and beyond that Mr. Carr would be able to generate more material and/or advise writers. The sets really are wonderful. The story brings to light many of the social issues of that time. The Alienist has elements of Poe, and Sherlock Holmes. Like SVU set in 1896.
I’ve read both of Caleb Carr’s novels about the”Alienist”. There is no reason why there can’t be many more seasons. A very intriguing mystery and an ongoing new methods of forensic science.
PLEASE DON’T cancel The Alienist. Acting is strong and the actors perfectly suited to their rolls, the sets are incredible! I see that some are not happy with the series. What? They need constant action instead of thoughtful dialogue and strong plots?

Seriously? You do know that it equaled Sean Hannity’s show this week in demo, right? Kevin Reilly can try to call this a hit to save his butt, but this show is a big ole failure! All one has to do is look at the ratings, even still, for Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead and their production costs to know this show is a joke. I would hope the powers that be at Turner are looking at him with questions regarding his decision making when a $5 million dollar per episode can’t get higher than a .51 on… Read more »
Love this show….The Alienist is superb, beautiful visually and through the intriguing story line ,cast and characters. Had me hooked from the first show!
Can’t wait for season 2…
