A historical fiction drama series, Barkskins is based on the novel of the same name by Annie Proulx.
The TV show examines the mysterious massacre of settlers in the vast and unforgiving wilds of 1690s New France. This event threatens to throw the region into an all-out war. Likely suspects abound – the English, the Hudson’s Bay Company, and a band of Kanien’kehá:ka (Iroquois) possibly in league with the English looking to drive the French from the territory. But, who or what brought these settlers to such a tragic end?
The series tells a story of exploration, adventure, and ambition among dreamers and fighters. Some have a utopian vision of the world while others are crass and conniving. All, however, are navigating the perils of a treacherous new frontier. As tensions escalate, unlikely alliances are forged, old antagonisms deepen and new families are formed against the seemingly endless natural riches and hidden dangers of the new American continent.
Characters include wealthy landowner Claude Trepagny (Thewlis); powerful innkeeper Mathilde Geffard (Harden); Hamish Goames (Barnard), a clean-cut Hudson Bay Company man; Charles Duquet (Bloor), a scrappy and industrious scoundrel; Trepagny’s indentured servant, Rene Sel (Cooke); Constable Bouchard (Wilmot), the king’s local lawman; Elisha Cooke (Wright), a cutthroat English barrel maker; sharp-tongued and ambitious Melissande (Haddon); Mari (Horn), Trepagny’s Wendat nation wife; Delphine (Sullivan), a hopeful and devoted Fille Du Roy; and Yvon (McClarnon), a Harvard educated Hudson Bay Company man.

Yes, absolutely should have at least another season. Some content more well developed than others, but if book author’s intent is more closely followed and dialog & characters stay true to that it is very important part of history. I was engaged @ most times & often surprised. Renew for Season 2; can’t leave “up in air or tree house” … surely material is there. Thanks!
I really like this show.. I thought it was well thought out and authentic. I think it’s terrible that National Geographic is ending the show leaving so many unanswered questions. I would like them to consider keeping the show going for a second season!
Yeah, I agree with others who cared to write their grievance about the abrupt cancellation of the show, you left us completely hanging. It was a bit complicated at first, but the more you watched, it was quite interesting. Please finish it and I read the book.

Have been a Nat. Geo. subscriber for 35 years. You guys always finished your stories! To leave us hanging like this is sooo unlike you. Please finish The story is well written and the charactors are great.
Season two is a must!!! Do not disappoint everyone who loyally watched and enjoyed the first season. Finish the book, tell the whole story. Do not leave us in suspense. Please listen to the viewers. We want to see where this goes. Great characters and story line needs to be completed.
I think the series is very good. It reminded me very much of the film “Black Robes” years ago. Then, the Jesuits had begun French settlements in what is now Quebec. Fast forward to larger French settlement in the era of Barkskins, and now, in addition to problems with the Iroquois, there are age old problems with the English. Sorry to hear episode 8 is the series finale. Am I the only one who appreciated Barkskins?

I loved the series. It was so unique and very realistic. I would love to see it continue. The ending to season 1 was hard to take with future episodes uncertain.
