TV shows The Flash and Gotham have been doing well this season. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for another DC Comics based series — Constantine. NBC has decided to shut down production after 13 episodes but it’s supposedly not cancelled and there could still be a second season.
Constantine revolves around the travels and work of John Constantine (Matt Ryan), an occult detective. He tries to help the innocent though his soul is already damned to hell. Others in the cast are Harold Perrineau, Charles Halford, and Angelica Celaya.
The supernatural series debuted on October 24th to a 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.28 million viewers. It was an okay start for a Fridays at 10pm series.
The numbers plunged about 30% in week two but that was Halloween so an above average decline was to be expected. The ratings rebounded a bit in week three and then dropped again in week four, falling to a 0.8 demo rating and 3.47 million. This past Friday’s numbers went back up again but the ratings are still pretty awful.
Deadline reports that production will be shut down after all 13 episodes of the first season have been produced. NBC isn’t ordering additional episodes at this time but it’s supposedly still in contention for a second season — for now, the optimism is based on last Friday’s increase and the DVR numbers.
Unless Constantine’s numbers continue to improve, it’s hard to believe that the network would put the time and money into producing and launching a second season. They’ve kept low-rated Hannibal around for three seasons (the show that will likely replace Constantine on the schedule in 2015) but only because it doesn’t cost them very much as a licensed show.
What do you think? Do you like Constantine? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season? How do you watch? Live, DVR, on demand, or ?
Why do you do this? I like a show you take it off, I don’t like a show you keep it on. I love Grimm & Constantine, and I agree with “Why Watch” comments…….
Constantine is a great show and its getting better. IM a DC fan for sure, and after watching the fifth episode and seeing the changes that are happening, like the future presence of the Spectre who in the comics inhabits Jim Corrigan’s body. There has been a nod inthe fist episode to the magical hero Dr. Fate. by showing his Helmet. There is every reason to continue to watch as well as produce this program because of the possibility of other supernatural hero’s showing up that are contained with inthe comic Justice League Dark. NBC you need to give this… Read more »
Please DO NOT stop production of “Constantine”. I have been enjoying this show since it started and have not missed one episode. I look forward each week to the next show. Give the show a chance to get more followers, sometimes people don’t know about a show especially if it is on a different channel then they usually watch. So please let the show continue for at least Season One. Thank-you.
Im not a DC fan, but this is currently one of my favourite shows, even if it’s only had a few episodes. I’d be sad if they cancelled it after one season, it has the potential to be even better.
I record all network shows but this is one I usually watch later the same night it airs. The show is intense but once again a show not stupid & innane is not given a chance.
totally agree. I was born when a tv show’s season was at least 26 episodes. Now the studios are getting so darned cheap they are to the point they’re even cancelling them before they premiere. They are also doing that INANE business of getting a hit show, and then changing it to another night/time slot. They nearly killed GRIMM that way. WHEN a show is a HIT, don’t fix what ain’t broken. You want to use that hit to boost a new one, don’t take the hit’s timeslot – tried and true, putting a new show on before or after… Read more »
If the ratings are tanking after 13 episodes, a show shouldn’t continue. Likely would have been a better cable show where lower ratings would allow a show to continue.
So TIRED TIRED TIRED of seeing shows that do not get a chance due to this STUPID business of 13 episodes or even less. Anything decent just takes more time to develop than that – I watch Grimm on Fridays, then either Z Nation or Constantine while one records on DVR. The show is barely getting to its feet.
NBC if you have enough money to make 13, make 26 to give it time to GET a following. I would rather Constantine than Z Nation if given a choice.
I like the show. I normally watch it live. A second season would be fine with me. Too often shows are judged prematurely, and I think that may be happening here. If it was up to me, I would stick with the show.
Ratings are horrible and this show should be cancelled. I think NBC made a huge mistake when they cancelled Dracula and put on Constantine.
Sorry, but all of you Dracula fanboys are barking up the wrong tree. Dracula was slow, dreary, and extremely unexciting. This show is catering to a different audience.
I agree with Tom. If you liked Dracula, I’m happy for you. It was not bad but it was slow. I found myself dozing off when I watched it. Plus it did not stick to the original story which was kind of strange. I have not read the DC Comics but I enjoy this show and it should not be cancelled. I watch Grimm as well.
Please don’t cancel. Give it a chance.
I really enjoy the show, need a season 2, the story has interesting story lines,
It is an okay show. I am not really fond of it. The pilot was not that great to me. I rather watch Dracula instead of this Constantine
NBC should not have cancelled Dracula for some reason.
No, there are not nearly enough vampire shows on, are there?
Once again, shows that my husband and I like are being threatened. We like Constantine. And Grimm. I really hope they leave Constantine on the air!
It is a quirky show, no doubt. It probably frightens those of a strongly religious bent. But for the average viewer it is fun. I hope it isn’t cancelled. It grows on you as Grimm and Gotham does.
I’m giving this show a chance. I have 4 episodes on the Tivo if I remember right. The first episode was wayyyy too spooky for late night tv for most people. My wife said “That’s enough” when the girl on the van hood went all rubber doll like.
If the next few episodes are just as bad I think it’ll be dropped.
There’s a fine line in a good thriller that makes your hunny snuggle closer and a horror flick that makes her curl up in the corner and scream every time the house creaks.
Hope NBC cancels this show. I do not even like it after watching the Pilot! Dracula was much, much, much, much better. To be honest, NBC made a HUGE MISTAKE in taking out Dracula and putting this show!!!!
Well the pilot is the very first episode. So, you did not like it after watching one episode. Glad you are not the one in charge of giving the nod to new shows.
