It’s the end of an era. After more than 70 years, NBC is getting out of the soap opera business. The network’s last remaining daytime serial, Days of Our Lives, is moving to the Peacock streaming service as an exclusive in September for season 58. It will be replaced by a new series, NBC News Daily.
Premiering on November 8th of 1965, Days of Our Lives is set in the fictitious Midwestern town of Salem. It revolves around the members of the Brady, Horton, and DiMera families — along with their friends, enemies, and lovers. Season 57 cast members have included Lucas Adams, Lamon Archey, Lindsay Arnold, Camila Banus, Brandon Barash, Brandon Beemer, Nadia Bjorlin, Raven Bowens, Tamara Braun, Bryan Dattilo, Mary Beth Evans, Dan Feuerriegel, Billy Flynn, Galen Gering, Stacy Haiduk, Deidre Hall, Jackée Harry, Drake Hogestyn, Jay Kenneth Johnson, Lauren Koslow, Martha Madison, Eric Martsolf, Marci Miller, Stephen Nichols, Emily O’Brien, James Reynolds, Suzanne Rogers, Sal Stowers, Alison Sweeney, Josh Taylor, Paul Telfer, Robert Scott Wilson, and Arianne Zucker.
Days of Our Lives is the lowest-rated of the four remaining network daytime soap operas and is consistently beaten by The Bold and the Beautiful (CBS), General Hospital (ABC), and The Young and the Restless (CBS). The 57th season of Days has been averaging a 0.26 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.681 million viewers. Compared to season 56, that’s down by about 13% in the demo and 1% in total viewers.
The move to Peacock is not unexpected as more viewers have shifted to delayed viewing over the years. Peacock has also released two seasons of the Beyond Salem spin-off over the past 13 months, as well as A Very Salem Christmas movie last December. While Peacock offers paid versions of its streaming service, free tier subscribers can watch commercial-supported recent episodes of Days.
Here’s the announcement from NBC about Days of Our Lives’ departure from NBC:

What do you think? Are you disappointed that Days of Our Lives is leaving NBC? Will you be watching on the free or paid version of Peacock?
I am disappointed about Days going to paid Peacock . I have been watching since 1988 but will not pay for it. They just lost another viewer.
Thus is un-acceptable. Bad move NBC.
What about countries that cannot access Peacock? This service is not available in Canada and have been watching for over 40 years. Seems very disrespectful to your viewers.
Shouldn’t be an issue. NBC & Peacock have nothing to do with the distribution of Days in Canada or any other country. If Global (which airs the show up there in the Great White North) wants to keep the show on a “normal” TV signal, that’s totally between them and Sony, which distributes the show.
This doesn’t affect anyone except American viewers. Sony owns Days of Our Lives, not NBC. All NBC does is pay Sony for the broadcasting rights. Sony will continue to sell Days of Our Lives to whoever is willing to air it. Whatever NBC does is irrelevant to foreign markets. If Sony shuts down production permanently, then everyone’s affected. Otherwise, Canadian viewers will still get DOOL on Global.
Shame on NBC. Just what we need another news show. But at least DOOL won’t be interrupted anymore. Been following since Day 1 and will continue.
I remember when NBC did the SAME thing to Passions, which was crap anyway. NBC cancelled it and DirecTV picked it up and then they cancelled it again themselves. I regret ever watching that insipid show. Same thing will happen with Peacock and DOOL. I give it exactly one year
Now I understand why so many cast members have left due to newer contracts. I have peacock $4.99 mo good shows available. I subscribed for yellow stone primarily. Will mess with daily routine though
In 2019, Days literally released the entire cast from their contracts to cut back on the budget. NBC is simply saving the show long enough to serve out the next two years, until that contract runs out.
So disappointing to hear. Been watching for 45 years or so. I can’t believe they are doing this for a news show! Msnbc can’t keep viewers why do they think will be any different?
nbc has the WORST streaming service on the planet! Days is really a joke with the MOST ridiculous “story lines”, pay for that…laughable. ZERO watch of nbc shows, Days was only an occasional watch when I was BORED!
I’m disappointed that this happened but not surprised and it’s better than being fully canceled. At least I can still watch it…. I just have to pay.
I watch Days of Our Lives before when I was a little kid. This show is AMAZING! Why this show change NBC to Peacock. I hope they get a new season airing on NBC.
MONEY IS WHY
Because, Days is last in the ratings and is no longer profitable for NBC. The network is losing money on it. It’s either this or cancellation. Days has been on the brink of cancellation for 15 years.
Very sad DOOLs is leaving. We don’t need another news show!!! Have watched DOOL’s for years..
Very sad news I was once a HUGE fan, but I haven’t been able to watch since they killed Bo Brady. Stupid thing to do. 57 years isn’t a bad run for a soap opera
Bo is alive thanks to Dr. Rolf.
Actually, Rolf had nothing to with that one. It was all Megan Hathaway DiMera and her stupid prisms
It is ironic that one of Stefano’s kids did NOT use Rolfie to bring somebody back from the dead… but maybe him being in prison at the time made things a little more complicated?
Megan Hathaway is ALIVE?!?! She was murdered by Larry Welch almost FORTH YEARS AGO
I take it you haven’t seen season 2 of “Beyond Salem” yet? Might want to watch that. Larry’s in it too… but he only makes a brief appearance… and no, he’s not alive.
I’ve watched DOOL consistently since the 70s. When they brought back that stupid demon storyline last fall I was done forever. Good bye and good riddance!
And yet… my story actually made more sense than anything that has happened since I left Salem.
Go figure….
Well, I’ll give you that. The show has gone DOWNHILL ever since they killed EJ and Bo. Then, they bring EJ back from the dead in some silly sci-fi subplot. I used to LOVE this show. The Three Prisms storyline was one of the most exciting things on television. You had SO many villains: Stefano, Andre, Megan, Larry. All after the legendary Three Prisms, which turned out to be a in the
The demon storyline was an attempt to increase the ratings. It didn’t work. They’re still in last place, hence the move to Peacock Premium.
I’m extremely disappointed. I’ve watched this soap since it’s onset. I’m on a fixed income and your forcing me to pay for it. I think your becoming “woke” and utterly ridiculous with these changes .what does it take to stop this nonsense. Another news show is not a way to go , your competitiveness is crazy. No one follows the news , all companies can’t report the truth they all report their beliefs …so wrong. Society has stop thinking on their own , the woke culture is creating “pansy’s !” So disappointed I can’t even explain it .
THEY ARE GREEDY -CARE NOTHING FOR ANYTHING BUT MONEY!!
I’m the first one to call out these networks on being “woke.” But this has nothing to do with that, it has to do with money. NBC Universal is a business, Days is not profitable. DOOL is last in the ratings, it’s been on the brink of cancellation for 15 years, and it literally released the entire cast from their contracts in 2019 to cut back on the budget.
Goodbye Day of our life need to go. Now new series spin-off both shows on peacock interesting.
