There won’t be a third season of Extant but this isn’t the end of Halle Berry’s relationship with CBS. The summer series has been cancelled but Berry is now executive producing a legal drama that’s in development for the network.
Extant, began when astronaut Molly Woods (Halle Berry) returned to Earth after a year-long solo mission in outer space. Her reunion with her family is thrown into turmoil when it’s learned that she’s pregnant. For season two, the cast includes Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Pierce Gagnon, Grace Gummer, and David Morrissey.
The first season of Extant underperformed for the network and averaged a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.15 million viewers. They brought it back but a lot of changes were made to the series. Unfortunately, they didn’t seem to help. The second season, which concluded last month, averaged a 0.7 in the demo with 4.70 million.
Despite the big declines in the ratings, there was talk of moving forward with a third season, mostly because of Berry’s star power. Ultimately the decision was made to end the show.
“I am so proud of what we accomplished on Extant,” said Berry. “This season seemed such a natural place to end Molly’s journey that I, along with CBS, felt it best served the story to leave it there. It was my first foray into episodic television, and I’m excited to continue my relationship with CBS, producing more compelling stories through my 606 Films production banner.”
In a statement, CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller, said, “CBS, Halle Berry and the producers have decided to conclude the ‘Extant’ story after last season’s exciting and fitting conclusion. Extant’ played an important role in expanding CBS’s lineup of original scripted programming in the summer. We are proud of the show’s success on the network, as well as its popularity on Amazon Prime Video. We also want to thank the incomparable Halle Berry for her commitment and support for the series, and look forward to working with her on our next project together.”
That next project is called Legalease and will center on a biracial lawyer from Chicago who follows a case to New Orleans. She ends up partnering with a good ol’ boy attorney while working in a biased justice system. It’s unclear if Berry will star in the new show or stay behind-the-scenes.
What do you think? Did you like the Extant TV show? Do you think that it should have been cancelled or renewed for a third season? Which season did you prefer?
I think the story was told on that last episode good closer, I was hoping for another Science Fiction series, what a disappointment it wont be. I think attorney, detective, cop, crime series is already covered too well on TV.and seems repetitive as well like other posts have also said.
Let’s see, Extant; family friendly, suspenseful, highly entertaining to the point of addiction, one of the few Syfi series on TV now-a-days, I could actually feel comfortable watching with my kids. Of course CBS concealed it!! Because we all are really wanting yet another stupid, tired lawyer/law/cop show, with tired pots, staring, yet again, used-up, sexually charged characters with no scruples, manors, or morals, with writers who, hyped up on unrealistic scenarios couldn’t literate a good, original story line to save their lives. CBS must really think the average TV watcher is some knuckle dragging, intellectual challenged moron, without any… Read more »
I loved this show…I think they need to redo how they measure ratings. I think shows aren’t getting their real ratings from however they actually check them. So many good shows have been canceled that were really good in the past few years. THIS is just one of many reasons why Netflix and the others are gaining so much traction from that coveted 18-40 crowd.
The first season was great, but I was starting to get confused. The creators seemed to have lost their focus. I’m okay with them pulling this, I just wish they would have had a stronger finish.
Extant was an example of great television. It was family friendly, but good science fiction. Science Fiction, however, seems to be a genre that doesn’t fair well on the major networks. Extant needs to be picked up by a network that knows what to do with a star talent like Berry and the talented cast that supported her and the genre. Also, finding a good spot for it would have helped. Remember that network television killed Star Trek off quickly and it had a long life afterward. If viewers liked this, they should start a campaign online to bring it… Read more »
I am so disappointed! I wish you would reconsider! I was really looking forward to what was going to happen in Season 3. Such a shame! Sorry to see it canceled. Again I hope you will reconsider.
So sad..loved the show!
What the heck!!! This is one of the best TV shows around these days. My family and I look forward to seeing this show every week and was anxiously waiting for the return. We are very upset to learn that the show has been cancelled. What a waste at such bad judgement!!!
Extant is a show you look forward to seeing each week, that had good values and content when there not much on prime time of value to watch these days.
It’s a great and creative show. Sad it’s gone
This is very disappointing. We finally had a show to watch that was different from all the others. Now, you have taken it away. I do agree with many, it was not a smart move. Annette
Disappointed it was cancelled, we really enjoyed it.
Again, this time with Extant?
Why are you taking off all
the good shows? How do you
keep your jobs?! If you keep on
doing this the public might as
well THROW AWAY their TVs !!!
I know Extant makes like the 3rd show on cbs that I know of that got cancelled oy vey
Another dumb network move. Could have seen it a mile away. start watching a good story with a good story line which is interesting and when it gets good then cancel it. Stupid move.
