We’ve received quite a few comments and emails from readers who can’t believe that FlashForward was cancelled when another ABC show, V, was renewed?
On Tuesday, ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson explained the difficult decision this way, “It was a ‘Sophie’s Choice.’ In the end, FlashForward didn’t engage audiences like we hoped. For V, I get more anecdotal calls and emails than any other show on the schedule. A huge part of rebuilding the network is about taking chances. Some shows just don’t work out.”
While that sounds very nice, ultimately the decision to renew or cancel any TV show comes down to ratings.
FlashForward premiered with a strong 4.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 12.47 million viewers. Viewership quickly declined though and has been steadily falling. The two most recent episodes have fallen to a 1.3 rating and about 4.8 million viewers. That’s terrible for a network show.

Meanwhile, V debuted with a 5.2 rating in the demo and 14.3 million viewers. V’s numbers have fallen quite a bit as well but not nearly as low as FlashForward’s. After dropping to a low of a 1.9 rating in the demo and 4.87 million viewers, the last two episodes’ ratings have risen a bit — reaching a 2.3 rating and 5.69 million.
So, while both shows have indeed been struggling, V is still doing quite a bit better than FlashForward (though certainly not great). ABC tends to save one or two struggling shows each season and V was their choice this time around. FlashForward’s ratings were just too low.
V is set to return in early 2011, or possibly as early as November 2010. The four month hiatus really hurt V’s ratings this season. You have to wonder if a six or eight month hiatus will kill it altogether this time?
What do you think? Which show did you prefer? Why do you think that FlashForward’s viewership has dropped so low? Will the long break between seasons kill V?

I watched both V and Flashforward I really enjoyed both shows but if I had to choose I would rather see Flashforward stay around I think its a better show and plus V is a remake…
FLASH FORWARD IS THE BETTER OF THE TWO – Bring back and give it a chance – we, your viewers, are really tired of investing our time into a good show, and then it be yanked away, You also messed with the Flash Forward season when your had a long break for it also. If V gets another chance, then so should this forward thinking show!! You should know that one day soon, we your viewers, are just going to give up on TV, like your give up on a show and us!
Just like Jericho, Defing Gravity now Flashforward,, and soon to be V, I don’t know why I torcher myself all the time wiht soon to be cancelled shows. Thought provking shows just are not the what the mindless public wants, they would have rather have mindless staged realty shows, biggest loser , top model, wipe out etc, etc.. If all that is left is realty shows, then I will be watching less TV and more videos!
I have to agree with everyone that canceling FlashForward was a major mistake on ABC’s part. This show is great and like many people have said, it really makes you think. I have never watched V because the preview looked stupid to me. Instead of getting rid of the show what they need to do is try different days and time slots during the summer. I believe the hiatus they took really hurt the show and if anyone knows how to get a hold of the ABC company, they should mention this site and have them look at the poll… Read more »
I’ve been watching both shows. Flash Forward had a lot more to it, but it didn’t give me as strong an incentive to watch it. The plot of Flash Forward was no doubt better than V, but it didn’t offer characters that I cared about, unlike V.
Flash Forward had real potential. I think it had less viewership because of the time frame and day that it was on. The true test would be to put it on this summer, while other shows have finished for good such as LOST, and while some shows are on hiatus. Also I am not sure why they waited until the very last moment of this finale episode to actually deal with the content of the flash forward , as it was occuring. I want to see more and to be able to see the after math of the last flash… Read more »
I,m with you. I want to know what happened. Bring it back.
Bring the show Back….
Gahhhhhh, I hate how they cancelled FF. Especially since it was planned to be a season finale, so we will never know what happens next. T_T
The Original V was well written, and gave a sense of world doom (they were stealing humans as food and sea water). The new one is more of a bad CSI episode. Its a shame.
As you see, many people followed the show, even in its survey V is above
with a wide lead , I think that maybe what they ruling was
the time or the day, we’ll give him another chance. “In my flashforward saw that V would lead to ruin”. Regards
I watched V three times and never got hooked. I watched Flash Forward every week. It was interesting and had an interesting way of revealing the various portions of each person’s flash forward. Hope there is some way to bring it back. Maybe the network formerly known as the Sci Fi Network will get its head out of its *** and buy it. The Syfy Network has pretty much given up on good Sci Fi and needs to get some good shows to replace the junk.
Also, V only did as well as it did because it followed LOST on Tuesdays.
I watched both Flashforward and V, and Flashforward would be my first choice without a doubt. V is a REMAKE for god’s sake. Flashforward had potential to be a show I could actually enjoy, as I am not into the many other thought-less shows on television (such as Dancing With the Stars, Idol, and every comedy). LOST is over, and now I have nothing to watch. =[
abc has a bunch of dumbasses making all the decitions. Flash forward is alot more interesting then V. V sucks. i hate the show.
I personally got really bored with V and stopped watching it. But, I watched Flashforward to the end…and would like to see what happens after this next flashforward!
