CBS has just released details about the two hour finale of Hostages but refer to it as just a “season finale” instead of a “series finale.” Does that mean that the “limited series” is coming back for a second season?
On Hostages, Toni Collette plays Ellen Sanders, a doctor who’s set to perform a fairly rudimentary surgical procedure on the President (James Naughton). When a group of men (led by Dylan McDermott) invade her home and take her family hostage, she’s faced with a lose-lose decision. If she doesn’t cause the President to die on the operating table, the terrorists will kill her family. The cast also includes Rhys Coiro, Billy Brown, Sandrine Holt, Tate Donovan, Quinn Shephard, and Mateus Ward.
The Monday night drama got off to a mediocre start in the ratings, drawing a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.41 million total viewers. In week two, the numbers fell more than 16% and they’ve essentially kept falling ever since. Last month, it hit a new low with a 1.0 demo rating and 4.5 million viewers.
The network touted Hostages as a “limited series” from the start but, had the show been a success, they surely would have found a way to bring it back in some form.
How? Well, we don’t need to worry about that. Unfortunately for fans of the show, there’s virtually no chance that CBS will bring Hostages back next year. The ratings are just too low.
Hopefully, the producers knew the show won’t be back and have prepared a very satisfying ending.
[Possible Spoiler:] The two-hour season (series) finale airs on January 6th at 9pm. The episodes are titled “Suspicious Minds” and “Endgame” and are described this way: “After Duncan discovers Sandrine’s betrayal, he decides to use her to save Nina and Sawyer. Also, just before Ellen is to operate on the President, the First Lady confronts her and forces Ellen to tell the truth about the assassination plot.”
What do you think? Do you like Hostages? Do you think it should be brought back somehow? Why do you think that more people didn’t tune in?
I have loved this serial since it began and so hope it continues. I do not get “glued” to many serials, but P-L-E-A–S-E keep this going.
Thanks.

Hostages is an edge-of-your-seat thriller, one of the BEST shows in a LOOONNNNGGG time! Hated Scandal and Blacklist–thought they were duds. Hope Hostages DOES return! Who cares if it’s a bit unrealistic–maybe it feeds the inner dark wishes about certain administrations???
Couldn’t agree more – this show is exciting and leaves you with wanting to see what’s going to happen in the next episode. A well written, well acted series and should be allowed to continue.
Very little profanity, blood guts and sexual content. Big on suspense. Forget Blacklist,it was a disappointment big time. Football stinks. Could be an hour earlier but really enjoyed and looked forward to it. Need more shows like it. Seems networks think that if they can get some chick to show their body or get some more people to spew something out their mouths(gross & way over done)that they have a hit. Come give us back good TV that we can watch with our children. K?
Up against The Black List, The Voice, AND Monday Night Football. What did you expect? Bring back on a different night!
Yes, this should get a renewal. Great show with suspense, twists, and mysterious characters all over the place. The Israeli version of this show has been given a second season. Hopefully the American version will too!
I think it would have been a great mini-series. Like TNT doing Mob City. It was shown in three two-hour slots and was excellent. Looks like cable TV, specifically TNT, is running ahead of network TV with the interesting shows. Sitcoms and reality shows definitely not entertaining.
Hostages is one of the few dramas on network television that is worth watching. It’s a shame the writers cannot come up with additional plots to keep it going. I attribute low ratings to the fact that the majority to people watching TV during this time slot are more involved in the less sophisticated reality shows.
as for the plot, who cares if it is far fetched, this is TV. It’s great entertainment.
Bring Hostages back. It is my favorite show including better than Scandal. Don’t cancel. Bring back so our Hostage parties can continue.
This show has gotten better with each passing week.
Hostages is great and has me on the edge of my seat every episode! That being said I do believe it should just end and not come back,as the article says I hope the producers knew it might end and they have the ending satisfying with closure.
I think the ratings were poor because of the time slot. It was up against the Blacklist. I believe that if the network changed the time slot it would have been ok.
I have thought the premise to be preposterous, but still have followed the show. However,
I don’t think that it ever had a chance for a second season. I’ve mainly watched it because of the actors in it; surely, not because of the plot.
I find the drama very suspenseful. Also the plot is unpredictable with all the twists and turns.
It should DEFINITELY have another season… best show ever!!
Like Last Resort, Hostages was a premise that could not run more than a few episodes. While I enjoyed watching Last Resort, I knew if it dragged out longer than it did, it would become unbearable to watch.
Can’t say the same about Hostages, couldn’t get into it at all.
It should be a mini series instead of a regular one….
That observation’s spot-on. Throughout the series, as I watched numerous episodes I had the same recurring thought. Absent, a jarring plot-development shift beyond the President’s impending surgery, this would’ve been perfect for a 2, 3, 4 episode mini-series instead of trying to leg it out for a whole season…
