As suspected, the Intruders TV show has been cancelled after one season of eight episodes. BBC America and BBC Two have decided not to order a second season.
On Intruders, a former LAPD detective (John Simm) investigates strange occurences which lead him to a secret society whose members seek immortality by taking over the bodies of others. The rest of the cast includes Mira Sorvino, Tory Kittles, James Frain, and Millie Brown.
Executive producer Glen Morgan broke the news of the cancellation on Twitter and wrote, “Well, Reverti, this life is over. Intruders will live only in 8 episodes. We can’t thank those that supported us enough… #Intruders such an intelligent audience willing to be challenged and face tough questions. Hope we will all be triggered in 9 years. What goes around, comes around. #Intruders. Thank you! 9!”
Michael Marshall Smith, who wrote The Intruders novel, had this to say about the cancellation:
Sadly, we are finally able to announce that BBCA will not be renewing INTRUDERS.
The remit was to adapt the book, which Glen and his team did brilliantly. It was never a given there would be more — though we did discuss ideas for future arcs — and for a variety of reasons the first season had to out-perform the norm in order to continue. Unfortunately it did not.
Why? Well, they didn’t play it safe. The show was distinctive and unusual, narratively uncompromising and texturally bold. In a world where many viewers will bail after twenty minutes because something’s not just like everything else, it dared to ask people to care — to keep the faith and wait to see what happens next. They didn’t sell the book short: they did it proud. As an novelist that makes you feel very privileged, and grateful.
A huge thanks to everyone who watched and supported the show — you made the whole thing fun, before and during, and are still doing so afterwards. I’m glad to know you.
I also feel extremely honoured to have had a book worked on by so many people of such extraordinary talent. Producers like Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter (and Jess Pope, who doggedly developed the show for years in the UK before it came to BBCA); a developer of Glen’s unique vision and experience, writers like Kristen and Darren; the remarkable cast of actors in roles both large and small; creative geniuses like Mark Freeborn and Bear McCreary; directors like Daniel Stamm and Eduardo Sanchez — not to mention the social media and marketing people from BBCA who gave it such loving attention here in the US.
What do you think? Do you like the Intruders TV show? Do you think that it should have been cancelled or renewed for a second season?
I’m so bummed out! Intruders was/is one of the best shows BBCA ever put out. That little girl that played the lead royal had me believing she was a 40yr old man in a little girls body. Brilliant!!! Please, please find some way to bring it back.
After watching the first season which was utterly brilliant I had a feeling it would be cancelled. It was too intellectually and culturally challenging for many. Much like American Gothic it was too different and out of the average viewers comfort zone.
A great comment and it was the same feeling that I had!
Please bring it back! I NEED to see what happens to the characters that the show so artfully developed! I was so excited to find a show like this… And now I find out it’s been cancelled!?
Well it seems BBC is keeping up in there tradition. Get something good rolling and cancel it or kill off all the characters. And performance doesn’t seem to really mater either. I’m glad Orphan Black is still going but other shows like Prime Evil did incredibly good and they killed that one off. Hmm wonder if they are going to do a move like that on Sherlock.
I waited all year for the new season! Just found out that it was cancelled! I liked this so much more than Orphan Black! Oh well, I liked Copper better than Ripper Street, and what happened to Luther? I watched 1 new episode and it was gone? I love all the series on BBC America, but Intruders was outstanding!!!
Always want more of the extraordinary john simm and the intellectual challenge of the show was a welcome change.
Please bring this series back! I just finished watching the entire first season and loved it!! Went to look online for more info only to find it had been cancelled. I can’t believe this! This show was phenomenal and created such a following! Please consider bringing back!!
It was a shame that the show was cancelled.I kept looking for it on the BBC and then found it had been cancelled. I now watch “Orphan Black”.
Please Bring it back in any form it is ridiculous that a show of this caliber was cancelled after only 1 extraordinary season that left fans gasping for more much like carnivale was cancelled long before its sell by date unfortunately.
Wow I can’t believe the show was cancel! Some fans of Intruders like my son and me like to see something different not the common tv show that you always know what’s going to happen next and how it’s going to end.
It’s a shame to see that second season was cancel we were truly looking forward to watch Intruders season 2.
GREAT NEWS *** Fans can either make this show come back, or have it made into a film(s). This was done with a tv show titled Firefly in 2003. After fans had campaigned, it was made into a film titled Serenity in 2005. show Serenity, directed by Joss Whedon. Come on guys-we can do it. Let’s just do what the fans of Serenity did, organizing online forums and raising funds for an ad in Variety. Let us use the patience and intelligence that allows us to enjoy shows like these that actually have depth, and complexity. We can not let… Read more »
Nooooo – this is terrible news!
I live in The Netherlands and started to see this serie a few weeks ago and became very enthousiastic and I think it’s one of the best serie of last years.
Hopefully they will regret ending this serie and will start again.
How is it possible that the rating on IMDB was so low.
I thought the show was on hiatus! I kept forgetting the name and turning on shows like the returned or the leftovers, thinking that the show was back on and being so disappointed that I couldn’t find my show. I know it wont be back, but there were some great actors in that cast. The little girl was phenomenal. Boo!
Oh no! How utterly depressing, I was SO looking forward to season two. Maybe they’ll get enough commentary from disappointed fans to re-think that decision! I honestly can’t believe it didn’t do well, the show was brilliant, the premise fascinating, (and a little unnerving), the script and cast were wonderful… There’s just no accounting for poor taste I guess, it’s typical though, asking the audience to actually THINK is always a risky proposition. It is, however, good to find out it’s based on a book, (I didn’t know) I’ll have to put my best effort into finding a copy! Well,… Read more »
