(CBS)
In the fall, Anna Faris left Mom, and now, the long-running sitcom is leaving CBS. The network has announced that the comedy series is ending and that the series finale will air on Thursday, May 6th.
The Mom TV series stars Allison Janney, Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly, Beth Hall, William Fichtner, and Kristen Johnston. Recovering addict Bonnie (Janney) must learn to adjust to life without her daughter and former-roommate, Christy (Faris), around. With a chaotic past behind her and a newly empty nest, Bonnie focuses on her marriage to her husband, Adam (Fichtner), and on what she wants to be now that she’s finally grown up. Now more than ever, Bonnie depends on the support of her friends, including wise Marjorie (Kennedy), wealthy and sometimes misguided Jill (Pressly), overly emotional Wendy (Hall), and her foster sister, Tammy (Johnston), who was recently released from prison. Through it all, these women help each other overcome their mistakes and stay sober in the face of whatever life throws their way.
The eighth season of Mom averages a 0.62 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.07 million viewers. Compared to season seven, that’s down by 22% in the demo and down by 19% in viewership. Seven episodes have aired thus far.
Season eight marks the final year in a two-season renewal from CBS and marks the end of star Janney’s current contract. Despite Faris’ departure, the sitcom still does well for CBS and is the network’s fourth-highest rated comedy.
“For the past eight years, we’ve had the great honor to bring these wonderful characters to life, sharing their struggles and triumphs with millions of viewers every week,” said executive producers Chuck Lorre, Gemma Baker, and Nick Bakay in a statement. “From the beginning, we set out to tell stories about recovery from alcoholism and addiction that are rarely portrayed in a network comedy series. Whether it was the emotional reactions of the live audience on tape night inside Stage 20, or discussions at the White House regarding the opioid crisis, or the personal stories we continue to receive on social media, we take great pride in knowing Mom has positively impacted so many lives. We are forever grateful to our brilliant cast and guest stars, wonderful writers, and amazing crew for going on this journey with us.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of the Mom TV series? Would you have watched a ninth season or, is it time to say goodbye?
I love this show!! Janney makes it; wish it was staying.
It’s the only show I watch the night it is on. Everything else is dreadful that particular night. An interesting show about real women, of course it’s being canceled.
I love Mom! Wish it wasn’t going off the air.
I am sure airing this season’s episodes erratically has not helped keep the viewership up. Hopefully that is now fixed and they can go out on what is really still a high note.
I don’t really think you gave them a fair chance. I’ve been watching and I was enjoying it even without Farris. But I don’t think you let them prove anything to you in one season.
Noooo….. this cancellation really hurts! I was sad about Brooklyn 99 being cancelled and now this. Mom is my absolute favourite comedy currently on air. I need this show in my life. I am beyond sad right now.
I love this show…..
This show has brought such joy & laughter to our home- the cancellation is such a disappointment!
Wish it would stay on……a lot of good sitcoms are getting canceled because of COVID….would rather watch Hulu, Amazon Prime, if they are canceling all the good sitcoms!!!
That’s an idea! Sell it to someone who will do right by this ensemble.
Exactly as I predicted the day Anna Faris left. The show had already jumped way off track from the original premise when they disappeared her kids after the first season. Without the character of Christy, it didn’t make much sense at all. Knew it would only last one more season.
Read what you typed make sense, really show was cancelled Mom not christy! This shows is about friendships of people struggling with addiction hum no sense. Maybe your simply mind does not make sense.
yes the show and the stories and characters evolved. We wouldn’t want anything on TV to actually replicate what happens in real life now would we? The storyline arc was very well done. The loss of kids was a plus for the show and had they kept the kids and the original premise the show would have been off the air 4 seasons ago. Funny how you couldn’t predict that.
I LOVE THE SHOW BECAUSE IT TOUCHES ON SUBJECTS THAT MANY OEOPLE SUFFER FROM. ADDICTION TO DEPRESSION ETC REALLY GOING TO BE DISSAPPOINTING TO LLSE THE SHOW
Please don’t cancel this show, we love it and would miss it terribly. It’s only been getting better and better, and NOW they are going to cancel it? WHY it’s a comedy that could go much longer. But we would like to see more than one new show a month, why are they doing this with all the good comedies? We are only getting to see one new show a month.
I still love the show…wish they would not cancel!!!
8 years 2 late, I don’t know why this was on tv in the first place. sorry for the “fans”
Because it was great and profitable.
35 award nominations, 11 wins, Huge audience still ranks in the top 4 in the “last” season? It’s not hard to “understand” why it was on TV in the first place. What’s hard to understand is the point of your comment?
Why aren’t they saying reason for cancellation? It’s gotta be money where lots of contracts are up.
I’m bummed that it’s ending. I hope it gets picked up by another network!
