Earlier this week, NBC announced their mid-season schedule and, not surprisingly, low-rated Prime Suspect wasn’t on it. Supposedly NBC execs hadn’t cancelled the show and would still be “considering their options” until all 13 episodes had aired.
Now comes word that production will be shutting down before the holiday. The cast and crew were reportedly informed of the season wrap on Monday afternoon, as NBC was announcing their schedule. It surely wasn’t a surprise. Mario finishing episode 12 now and will complete number 13 before closing up shop.
There won’t be any more episodes produced for this season, despite the fact that the network ordered another half dozen scripts. Though NBC isn’t officially saying that Prime Suspect is cancelled, the cast and crew have been told that there won’t be a second season.
Theoretically, Prime Suspect could be brought back next season but that would mean that the network would have to put a lot of money into promoting a show that had been off the air for nine months, a show that couldn’t muster strong ratings after a big launch. Thus far the show’s averaged a dismal 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.97 million viewers.
There’s simply no reason for the network to spend any more resources on Prime Suspect. For whatever reason, most of the network just weren’t interest in this TV series.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Prime Suspect is being cancelled and won’t be back for a second season?

While I wish the show wasn’t ending, the problem that I had with the show was that the supporting characters took too much screen time from Bello.
I’m sad to see it go, but mostly because I adore Maria Bello! I hope she does another series or movie soon!
I actually liked the show and thought the acting was pretty good. Definitely disappointing.
I liked this show. Now there’s nothing left for me to watch on NBC. As a former resident of CT, the local NBC station was channel 4. I would always default my VCR to work on Channel 4, because when I wasn’t watching my recordings, I was always watching NBC. Now living in Mass 6 years, I have to think really hard about what channel NBC is even on, not that I am ever looking for it. Even when I watched Prime Suspect, I was watching OnDemand. Bye, bye NBC.
This is a great show. They need to give it a full season and then run again through the summer before they make a decision. Stupid.
I am very disappointed. I like the show s acting , intelligence, Plots. what is the matter can’t tell a good show, I find it hard to find a show I want to watch every week.
I’m very sorry to see the show come to an end. I thought the pilot was kind of flat but enjoyed all the episodes that have aired since then. It has never felt anything like its British predecessor but I suspect many fans of the Helen Mirren vehicle weren’t disposed to like a US version and didn’t check it out. I wish the producers/network had used another name and not tied it to the original; maybe it would’ve had a better chance of succeeding.
One of NBC’s better shows and only one of two I was watching. I didn’t like the first show due to the men trash-talking Bello’s character, but decided to give it a second viewing. It got better and wasn’t your typical police show.
I am bummed. I liked the show a lot and I don’t think NBC gave it a chance.
I won’t miss it. There just wasn’t anything about it that made it worth an hour of my time.
I’m quite disappointed that it has been canceled especially considering NBC’s overall weak lineup. I know they did try airing repeats on several nights to draw an audience, but still wish they would have given it more time. Now I’m down to just Law & Order SVU, Sunday Night Football and an occasional Dateline on NBC. Hoping by some miracle Prime Suspect is moved over to USA.
Well thanks a lot to everyone who chose dumb reality tv over this show and other quality scripted shows. Forget y’all. I liked this although it wasn’t perfect. Good job Maria Bello and cast members involved.
I thought the show was rather bad, with unlikeable characters who overplayed their parts. And it didn’t help itself by deliberately invoking comparisons to the superb British series of the same name. (“Jane Timoney” is no “Jane Tennison”) No loss, here.
I think this show was really well written and that the characters were inetresting. The acting was great and I enjoyed tuning in every week. Why do networks keep cancelling good shows? What will they replace it wit – Fear Factor? Uggh. I hate reality TV.
I thought the show was pretty good. It’s not something I will miss that much though
