Earlier this week, NBC announced their mid-season schedule and, not surprisingly, low-rated Prime Suspect wasn’t on it. Supposedly NBC execs hadn’t cancelled the show and would still be “considering their options” until all 13 episodes had aired.
Now comes word that production will be shutting down before the holiday. The cast and crew were reportedly informed of the season wrap on Monday afternoon, as NBC was announcing their schedule. It surely wasn’t a surprise. Mario finishing episode 12 now and will complete number 13 before closing up shop.
There won’t be any more episodes produced for this season, despite the fact that the network ordered another half dozen scripts. Though NBC isn’t officially saying that Prime Suspect is cancelled, the cast and crew have been told that there won’t be a second season.
Theoretically, Prime Suspect could be brought back next season but that would mean that the network would have to put a lot of money into promoting a show that had been off the air for nine months, a show that couldn’t muster strong ratings after a big launch. Thus far the show’s averaged a dismal 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.97 million viewers.
There’s simply no reason for the network to spend any more resources on Prime Suspect. For whatever reason, most of the network just weren’t interest in this TV series.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Prime Suspect is being cancelled and won’t be back for a second season?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Just when there is one intelligent, well-written, beautifully-acted show on network TV, it doesn’t get past half a season. And all it took was one viewing of The Firm tonight to know that it’s going to be a stinker!
So disappointing! My husband and I looked forward to this show every week! One of the best shows on tv right now. There is so much garbage out there, and this show was very well-written, great acting…Maria Bello was fantastic in this show, very believable, and so much better to see a real woman depicting how it would be in reality vs some of these shows (ie Unforgettable) where the main female role is a woman whose makeup and hair is always flawless…I mean, seriously?
Prime Suspect was a great show…too bad that NBC made a poor decision here.
I will really miss the great writing, authentic plots, superb acting, and engaging entertainment. I guess I’ll have to join mainstream America and learn to appreciate Celebrity Wife Swap.
I hope it moves to HBO, FX, or some other network where it will be appreciated.
Prime Suspect was a wonderful show of the “NYPD Blue” caliber. I loved it because the characters were flawed and not flawlessly beautiful. They were like normal people you might actually see in real life. It was good TV. I loved tough Bello and her partner was fascinating… empathetic in one show and weasel in the next. The character development was something to look forward to every week. Hopefully a cable channel will pick it up.
I’m so sad to see this show end. I really liked the lead character. Maybe we can convince NBC to have Detective T. make an appearance on SVU.
Dangit. I’ve liked this show SO much. I liked “Jane” – her personality, quirks, grit. The stories/plots were solid. It will probably be replaced by yet another “reality” show, which is unfortunate. I suppose I’m partial; crime dramas are always my favorite.
I’m very disappointed…but that’s nothing new. It took awhile to get accustomed to her hat but I loved her and all the other characters.
This was agreat show that was well written. Maria is smokin hot and plays a great role. I will sorely miss this show. Please reconsider and I’ll bet it catches on with many viewers.
One of the few intelligent shows that had me thinking that perhaps NBC finally got it right. How foolish of me to expect intelligence at the network. Good job NBC, no wonder your ratings continue to drag up the rear of the network shows. Thank goodnes I can find many great shows on cable!
Makes sense doesn’t it? Cancel a really good show so we can have another news program, reality show, or “The Firm”? The book was good, but the movie was awful and I’ll bet the tv show is closer to the movie than the book. Good drama, good acting, and good scripts made this show worth watching. I’m sick of all the crap reality shows that pass for entertainment. Network tv (with a few exceptions mostly on CBS) is a pile of stinking crap. Thank God for cable, Netflix and the internet so we can get some decent entertainment. NBC, the… Read more »
Another great show bites the dust while crap marches on. Reminds of the cancellation of “Ed” and “Northern Exposure”. With corporate news, the major networks continue to become more irrelevant.
My husband and I loved the show and are sorry that it no longer exists. The acting was good, the comments funny, and the plots interesting. Why, oh why do you take the good away and leave all the not-so-good stuff on TV.
This was/is a FANTASTIC show…my only favorite of the new season. Maria Bello was terrific and the characters were real. I so looked forward to it on Thursdays, and raved about it to everyone. Please rethink the decision and give it a chance to pick up some following. There is so little else worth watching.
Can’t believe yet another well-written, well-acted TV series is cancelled.
Another good show getting deep sixed. Not enough viewership. But keep the crap on because it sells. I understand you can’t loose money, but the real problem is that peoples tastes really suck. It’s the way it’s been and probably will remain so.
