On Friday at 8pm, NBC debuted a new reality series called School Pride. How does this one stack up? — a quick success or another candidate for quick cancellation?
School Pride tells the stories of communities who come together to renovate broken and aging public schools. The series follows parents, teachers, and students as they roll up their sleeves to make some positive changes. Hosts are Susie Castillo, Jacob Soboroff, Tom Stroup, and Kym Whitley.
In its first airing, School Pride attracted a meager 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.901 million total viewers. It landed in third place in the timeslot, tying with a repeat of No Ordinary Family on ABC.
The networks have lower expectations for Friday nights and reality programming but this is still a terrible showing. In the prized demo, it’s about half of what Dateline attracted a week earlier in the same timeslot.
Eight episodes of School Pride have been produced. NBC may let them all air but, based on this quantity of ratings, there doesn’t seem like much reason for the network to order a second season.
What do you think? Did you like School Pride or should it be cancelled?

I accidentally happened upon this show last week, had not seen any promos- so why and how would people know to watch? I was so moved by this show that I told everyone at work- they plan to watch! Our educational system and schools are in terrible condition, and funding continues to be cut! This show shows kids and communities working together to benefit our kids and our future! SAVE SCHOOL PRIDE!!! Give it a chance! I second Paula’s suggestion to get some stars (TV, movie, sports) to participate when the show is in their home-town or state! Save the… Read more »
Just stumbled upon the show tonight. Wish I knew about it sooner. Very uplifting for the soul during these difficult time. I will continue to watch this heartwarming show every weekend.
I think the show has a wonderful concept. I have a few teachers in my family and I know what they go through day to day with the schools and trying to get what they need just to get through the day with more cut backs. I say keep the show on the air. Hopefully it will motivate other areas to do the same with their schools and get the community involved.
Maybe even the ones with all the say so and money to do it with!
What a wonderful show, doing a great service! Much more deserving of a second season than many other shows on television right now. PLEASE do not cancel this show!
I am a prospective teacher and I have all of the shows scheduled to record on my DVR. This show should not be cancelled. It would be a great disservice to the kids, teachers, and the communities of America, especially the kids in urban and rural areas with no money!
I happened across the show and kept glued to the Tv screen. How can we not invest in our children, our future. I told other people about the show and they too want to become involved. KEEP THE SHOW
Why would NBC even consider cancelling School pride after only two or three episodes? Waiting for Superman just opened the door to creating awareness and provoking conversation about improving schools and education in America. The show featured some amazing young teachers and administrators. Don’t do American TV a disservice and not at least give this show a chance. No one even knows when it’s on? This would be a poor decision on NBC’s behalf and what would they replace it with?

Please find a way to keep this program on the air. Try to get entertainment stars to guest on the program when their home state is involved. The concept is so much bigger than Extreme Makeover on ABC. The consequences are so much bigger and valuable to our communities and country. To see the conditions of these schools and the kids’ involvement always makes me cry. To the show producers: tell us what we can do to keep this going!!
Thanks1
KEEP IT!! and I second the question “How do I get involved?!” Why would you vote to cancel this show when you could cancel the nauseating “Real Housewives of [fill in the blank]”
I am behind any show that can bring a community together like this and make a lasting difference!
Our daughter is studying to be a teacher and found this show. It is very motivating. The premise of kids asking for help, helping with the clean up and seeing the community come together is all positive. We also like how the show asks the decision makers to explain why each school was so neglected. Friday is a tough time slot. I hope this show finds its audience.
I really enjoy School Pride. My father was a teacher for many many years and my family still keep in touch with a few of the students he taught over 40 years ago. He passed away in 1991 and I still miss him. He taught in many schools in Oakland, CA around the projects and was very respected by his students and school faculty. I have to say he was a teacher first and a parent second. He was at school for the kids by 7 am and didn’t leave until about 4:30 pm. He was always there for them.… Read more »
What an incredible idea! We need to expand this beyond LA. Every school should be looking at ways to incorporate the program’s ideas into their districts. The show should definitely continue, helping bring the drop out rates and potential solutions to light.
This is a terrible show. Terribly produced and I worked on one of these schools. It is nothing like what you actually see. It should be cancelled immediately
I hope you don’t mean what you said. If the school wasn’t what they showed then why when the helicopter flys above the school and cameras actually let you see the inside and outside how could you say it is terrible. I hope you think twice about why became a teacher, I also hope you read my input on why they need to keep the show.
I love this show. This is what we need to take back our schools….community effort and local people making decisions. It’s great when they ask the people in charge why they let this happen!
