Not counting the Prison Break revival, FOX introduced 10 new TV shows during the regular 2016-17 television season and cancelled seven of them. Now they’ve picked up Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s new space adventure comedy drama. Can his animated series success translate to live-action sci-fi? Will The Orville TV show be cancelled or renewed for a second season on FOX? Stay tuned.
The Orville stars MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, Halston Sage, J Lee, Mark Jackson, Chad L. Coleman, Norm Macdonald, Larry Joe Campbell, Victor Garber, Brian George, and Rachael MacFarlane. In 2417, Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane) is promoted to captain The U.S.S. Orville, with the assistance of First Officer Kelly Grayson (Palicki). Unfortunately, she’s his ex-wife, and her presence acts as a bridle on his enthusiasm. Whether facing off with the Krill, a dangerous alien race, or attempting rescues on behalf of the Planetary Union, the human and alien crew still must deal with their mundane issues and each other.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
12/8 update: You can see the latest night’s ratings in context.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like The Orville TV series? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a second season on FOX?
11/2 update: The Orville is renewed for season two on FOX. Details here.
Love it. Leave it on.
Love it. This the space drama/comedy that has been in need for a long time. If Fox keeps it going, they will have a reliable time slot filler for a long time. Great character show, which few series (especially space dramas, ie. STD) any longer focus on.
Stop Foxing stuff up FOX. Put this show back on Sundays. Its a fun show that elicits hope and humor. Perfect for a Sunday night while we gear up for the start of the new week! If you insist on moving this gem around causing viewership numbers to fluctuate, please, please do not make the mistake of assuming it isnt directly your fault. Do Not Cancel this show. The world needs this light hearted, well written and produced scifi. Everything has been so dark in scifi this past decade. We need this. Viewership may have dropped with the new thursday… Read more »
This show is just going to bleed viewers throughout the season. Better to put it down now then grind the slow bleed of viewers and money.
I love it this is what startrek discovery should be! I know this show will have a great future if they continue it!
It’s a super fun show and should not be compared to other sic-fi series. it’s it’s own animal. I plan to keep on watching the series as it seems like it only gets better and better
Good grief don’t put starteck in this! They said there is no relation to it. I like the show don’t make it something it’s not.
I really enjoy The Orville, it’s serious, funny and sci-fi, most importantly, it’s not just another cookie-cutter show. I also REALLY enjoy the absence of a laugh track, I think the laugh track has outlived its usefulness ( if it ever was useful).
With a show like this, the possibilities are endless. I am hopeful that Fox will pick it up for a second season, I truly think if they do, the show has the opportunity to build upon itself and become a real hit !
This show is a mangy three legged dog that needs to be PUT DOWN!! It’s no good to anybody anymore
TERRIBLE show. Green screen crap, Star Trek rip off ) Robot sounds like Data and C3po had a baby/ soundtrack has Star Trek and Star Wars cheap rip off, Seth sucks as an onscreen actor, acting overall and make up stinks. The story lines are DIRECT rip offs like the Menagerie episode rip off. LOW standards. ALL my opinion of course… but it WILL not last.
Its obvious with that name this is coming from a Star Trek fan and is trying to compare a no serious often more human show to that thing cbs want to charge money for people to see. Get real Star trek is dead sonstopncomparing things to that overbloated cringe fest with the most racist podtrayal of aliens I have seen in a long time to soemthk g that at least can elicit a few chuckles and a few moments of cool. Fans who are so high are tbeir horse about grand spectacle and perfect writing watere down modern series into… Read more »
TERRIBLE show.
Three episodes in and it’s already in my top 5 TV shows that I love, and I’ve been watching TV since the 60s. I hope it stays around and just keeps getting better and better.
Love the show! The design of the sets are brilliant and brings the audience along for the action. It can’t be easy combining comedy and drama in a show like The Orville, but for the most part, it succeeds. Once in a while the humor is forced but most of the time, it make the characters seem more human. I really look forward to seeing this show every week. I find it uplifting. Please give it a chance!
I just watched all three episodes and i think it’s good we should at least see where this is going and continue it. If you dont like it juat watch something else dont Ruin this for bunch of other people who like it.There’s thousands of other TV shows you can watch and channels and then there is the Internet to look up other stuff to watch. So give it a chance.
The show sucks just cancel it!!!
I am an SF fan and writer. I am pleasantly surprised by the story lines of the first 3 episodes of The Orville. It is Star Trek propelled to an irreverent vein (read realisitic in light of the plot at hand) and actually works quite well. If the show doesn’t make it to season 2 it will be because it doesn’t play to the Lowest Common Denominator of the audience who expects a laugh track to let them know that something truly funny has just gone over their heads. The writing is superb and delivers more than one might expect… Read more »
This show can’t decide whether it wants to be a parody of or a tribute to Star Trek … and right now it just looks like a cheap counterfeit ! I say cancel it unless it dramatically improves in the next episode…
It’s neither, believe it or not the show is standing on its own, stop comparing it to other sci-fi shows.
To be honest, episode 1,2,3 of The Orville were pretty week imho, but the last one “If the Stars Should Appear” is pretty solid and I enjoyed it a lot ! It did feel like this show carries the spirit of Star Trek TNG, in a good way. Besides, Star Trek STD (sic) is such a huge pile of political SJW feces at the moment that suddenly The Orville doesn’t look so bad. Like a McDonald’s muffin seems delicious after having been served a steaming **** on a plate, especially one you had been waiting for for 10 years !
Hey Locutus’s lil ******… you are clearly a fan of TNG. you mean to tell me you think Star Trek Discovery is the show youve been waiting for? The Orville is clearly a heartfelt tribute to true space discovery scifi and TNG specifically. Its not a copy of TNG, but the creators are very clearly huge fans (as are we). Also, i think cheap counterfeit is harsh asf. The cgi so far is light years better than any star trek show i have watched. (discovery does look great visually, but are you really into that lens flare ******** look of… Read more »
Just watched the first two episodes. Loving it !!!
