It’s not like there was any question but NBC has confirmed that there won’t be a second season of The Slap, their low-rated Thursday night mini-series. The series ended as it began — with poor ratings.
On The Slap TV show, a birthday celebration comes to an abrupt halt when a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. It’s a small action that ends up deeply affecting all involved. The cast for the mini-series includes Peter Sarsgaard, Thandie Newton, Uma Thurman, Makenzie Leigh, Zachary Quinto, Dylan Schombing, Thomas Sadoski, Melissa George, Brian Cox, Lucas Hedges, Maria Tucci, Marin Ireland, and Penn Badgley.
The series got off to a very poor start in the ratings in February with the debut garnering a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.13 million viewers. The numbers took a big fall in week two, dropping more than 25% in the all-important demo.
The network cancelled their Thursdays at 10pm series, Allegiance, after five episodes and shifted The Slap to that later timeslot to finish out its run. The eight episodes ended up averaging a low 0.8 rating in the demo with 3.62 million viewers.
NBC promoted The Slap as a mini-series but, if it had been a ratings smash, they surely would have figured out a way to bring it back for a second season — potentially like “limited series” like Fargo or the UK’s Broadchurch. With such terrible ratings, that wasn’t going to happen and the network has confirmed that last night’s episode is indeed the last of the series.
What do you think? Did you like The Slap? Why do you think the ratings weren’t better? Would you have watched a second season of these characters?
I agree with most of the comments. This was a really good show and I don’t understand the poor ratings and am sorry that it will no be reviewed. We have more than enough of the various genres of detective shows with their clever, sarcastic protagonists. This show was original and a breath of fresh air.
Great cast, I thought it would have rated much higher!
I watched The Slap with my 25 year old son,my sis and her son. We all loved the show and could hardly wait for the next installment. Don’t know why they won’t continue…
I loved The Slap. I also liked Allegiance.
I truly wish for more series like these. I am a BlacBlacklist, Revenge, The Slap, kind of TV Person. Big mistake taking them off the line up.
I wrote a comment on this show after the 1st or 2nd episode so I’ll continue….. This was one of the best shows on NBC. This was life as it is today. Everyone has their own issues and one life affects more lives than all can imagine. Young people should watch this to see how their actions will “affect” others. Older people should watch to see how their actions “affected” the lives of others and those in the middle need to “watch” to learn….It is a deep program, well written and well acted. I’m sure that Hugo’s future will mold… Read more »
I found the show really offensive. For victims of actual abuse, comparing slapping a child to real abuse is incredibly offensive and upestting
I did not see the show as offensive but a reality that is ongoing and view of how people deal with this form of abuse.
I suppose each person that has faced some type of abuse views abuse differently. In my opinion, abuse is abuse. It is wrong and the affects can be long lasting and painful to deal with without help.
I liked the show. I especially liked how they did an episode on each character. I would have enjoyed seeing more.
Don’t understand low rating I really want this to continue why finale that is great show. You best bring it back .
My friends and I were looking for a good show on demand..and we found one!
We all work nights so never saw it on tv and heard very little about it. From the first episode we were hooked and watched all episodes in one night.
We then googled Season 2 and saw it was canceled. 🙁
Um..big mistake. Dont blame the show for poor marketing on the networks part.
Give it a chance. The characters are very interesting and the show is much deeper than any of us were anticipating.
I hope NBC reconsiders.
It’s ashame! Really good show with good actors and actresses.
This was doomed from the start because the Australian version had been shown on Showtime or Starz a year earlier. The story line was not changed and Melissa George played the same character in both productions.
Good I knew it wasn’t going to last that what they get 4 canceling Parenthood now serve them right I knew it wasn’t going to last ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha now DUMASS ES
i get you are mad about parenthood but why so spiteful? it’s only television. and parenthood, which i liked, also had low ratings. are they supposed to keep a show just for you and me? or should they keep shows that more people watch?
I thought the slap was very interesting. I wish it would continue. I would like to see what happens to Hugo– probably kill someone. I wanted to slap him. I was touched by the una Thurman / Blythe danner mother daughter situation– knowing her mother is dying. I would have loved to see how that played out. I think the writing was intelligent and I enjoyed the Brooklyn background. Please nbc continue the series for me. Thanks
May be the best series I have seen in many years. The story, writing, acting and directing were first rate. I feel that NBC executives likely are taking too short a view, as this was the kind of quality show one normally sees on HBO or SHOTIME. Truthfully, I believe NBC has hurt itself by following instead of leading. I am not certain, but Seinfeld did not do too well the first year. Anyway, we all lose.
Low ratings?!?!?!?! WOW!
At first, I did not care for the first episode but after the second – and all the episodes that followed- I was hooked!
I do recall reading that it was just a mini-series but had it continued, I would have watched.
SMH!
i watched it. the entire series was a bore. the concept just wasn’t any good. and the ending was terrible. but i have to say that a lot of shows have good concepts but the writing sucks. the writers of this era are just unimaginable. hollywood needs to get new writers and new people thinking up shows.
Agreed!
