You’re the Worst is having a pretty good time. Recently, creator Stephen Falk spoke with the Hollywood Reporter about his breakout FXX comedy, the end of its second season, and the future of the series.
A dark romantic comedy, You’re the Worst stars Chris Geere and Aya Cash as Jimmy and Gretchen, two seemingly toxic people who fall for each other despite their deep cynicism.
Though the series doesn’t boast high ratings, it’s been praised for its realistic depiction of relationships and, most recently, clinical depression.
Creator Stephen Falk, on the end of season two:
The [depression] storyline will play itself out in a very satisfying way. I think a lot of people who watch feel pessimistic about Jimmy and Gretchen’s chances, and I acknowledge that. There certainly are hints that can be seen in the opening theme song lyrics [“gonna leave you anyway”]. I can’t say what they ending will be, but I think we’ll generate a lot of buzz from this season and we’ll see it all played out in hopefully surprising but inevitable ways.”
On a possible season three:
Just like last season, I’m optimistic, but feel like we’ve told a satisfying story, but I’d love to have more chapters. But Landgraf stated that he considers a show renewal from three different people who get a vote [executives, critics and viewers]. Hopefully we’ll get that vote. I’ve done my job, and the network is happy with the job I’ve done.”
What do you think? Do you watch You’re the Worst? How do you feel about season two? Do you want a season three?
Best tv show ever I never want it to end!!!!

Just so I understand y’all now just hate-watching because “had such promise” seriously you’re the worst! I get that Gretchen’s storyline is unpleasant and I’m not going to jump on the sensitive portrayal and/or “voice of” bandwagon. However, this show continues as it began very much unique as well head and shoulders above any of the current offerings of television delivered in 30 minute increments. I may be biased though, New Phone, Who Diss is My JAM!
I’m really enjoying the show. It was obvious that it wasn’t a regular half hour comedy from the beginning. It’s normal for characters to go in and out of depression. The show is quite realistic about it. I really look forward to how they tie this season.
I’m glad he’s at least satisfied with how his vision is playing out, but I can’t help but think he’s either delusional or just selling us on the idea that FXX is happy with the show. As a loyal fan from day one who has watched every episode all 3xs its played each premiere night through 1.5 seasons….I can tell you its like watching NIGHT and DAY. Where is the fun? where is the quirky comedy and fun interaction from an AMAZING cast nowadays? Gretchen’s storyline has morphed the show into an entirely new show and not for the better.… Read more »
Exactly what I have been feeling! I was really enjoying the show until they started with Gretchen’s depression. Now I don’t like anybody on the show anymore but I have to keep watching because it had such promise. They took a really good show and sent it spinning down the drain. What a shame!
Thank you!! You have said EXACTLY what I feel about this show now but didn’t know how to put into words! I’ve been looking at other forums and sites trying to find other people who think this way, and I’m seeing a LOT of people praising the hell out of it and how well it portrays depression and such. Which it DOES, but that’s not why I got hooked on this show! I love this show because of the clever, witty, even cruel humor that was more like real life humor compared to canny TV humor! I seriously hope they… Read more »
