All this has happened before, and all this will happen again. The Tracking Board reports Michael De Luca will join Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark to produce Universal’s Battlestar Galactica feature film. Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica was cancelled by Syfy after one season. ABC cancelled the 1970s original Battlestar Galactica series that spawned it all, also after one season.
Reportedly, Universal has been looking to make a Battlestar Galactica film since the late 1990s, but hit pause, when Syfy’s 2003 mini-series and 2005 Battlestar Galactica TV series went forward. Movie talk bubbled up again in 2009. According to The Tracking Board, the feature version is expected to be more in line with the late Glen Larson’s original 1978 series. In 2014, prior to his passing, Variety reported Larson would be involved with the film.
Which Battlestar Galactica TV series did you prefer, the 1970s original, or the Syfy reboot? Who would you like to see cast in the film? Sound off, in the comments
I think the film should emulate the best aspects of both series: it should have likable, well-developed characters and a generally upbeat attitude, like the original series, but with a more intellectually stimulating, well-written story that is more scientifically plausible and has incisive social commentary, like the remake. But if the film is too gloomy, and the characters are all jerks, as in the remake, then I won’t go to see it.
I’d prefer to see a film based on the 1978 film, before anyone starts commenting that it wasn’t serious enough for today–there’s no reason it can’t be updated– much the same way STNG or Enterprise updated the source material from STTOS–I just don’t dig how “GRITTY” IS JUST A CODEWORD for DEPRESSING…..Why the hell do people wanna watch fictio that is DEPRESSING? Not empty headedly upbeat–I understand–BUT OUTRIGHT DEPRESSING IS JUST SICKENING…….
The reboot
Hope they make the original concept from Larson He could ever do the original concept because he never had the budget and time (first Galactica should be a mini-series and became over night a regular series) to do it and it would to dark for a TV Series in the 70ths. You see maybe the potential in the Pilot ”Saga of a Star World”! Battlestar Galactica was to big for the small screen because it should be a big epic space opera like ”Star Wars”. That’s why George Lucas was afraid of it at the beginning (he saw the original… Read more »
I would watch if it were tied to the original BSG or Richard Hatch’s version only. moore’s stuff is not and will never be BSG to me. nukes were obsolete and where was the culture in it?
I would prefer the reboot . I liked it much better although I would still like to see either one.
The original series was a joke. The reboot was a fine and memorable piece of dramatic work.
The original series is Genesis and my favorite. Too bad it was cut down.
I liked a little bit of both The 1978 version and the new version but when they made the new version they should have done it like the first I liked the ideas they had with the new version but they should’ve Inc. the old I have both versions liked both ideas What did not like how they changed Starbuck to a woman in the new version
Reboot of the Syfy series for sure !
I have no desire to watch a “remake” of Battlestar Galactica.
But if Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell reprised their roles, then definitely! Those two, along with Ronald D Moore and David Eich made that show what it was, and none were ever recognized by the Emmys or another significant awards show for their phenomenal work!
Sometimes it’s better to leave well enough alone!
