CHiPs aired for six seasons on NBC, but the California Highway Patrol has not forgotten the popular series, which ended in 1983.
On Sunday, the California Highway Patrol were involved in a chase on the Bay Bridge in San Francisco. Who was the criminal being chased down? According to the San Francisco Gate, a small Chihuahua dog was loose on the bridge, and it took a team of California Highway Patrol officers to rescue the dog before it was hurt.
The chase lasted for about a mile on the bridge, and it slowed down traffic for Sunday travelers. Check out a short video of the chase and a photo of the Chihuahua below.

Once he was saved, they decided to name the dog Ponch, after the character played by Erik Estrada on the series. The actor even heard about the rescue, and he thanked the California Highway Patrol for rescuing the pup. He has three Chihuahuas of his own at home.
