Last November, ABC opted not to order any additional episodes of Eli Stone’s second season, effectively cancelling the drama. The series’ co-creator, Marc Guggenheim, held out hope that the network might still order a third round.
The chances of that happening were very remote and they were finally put to rest in May when ABC announced its new schedule and Eli Stone wasn’t on it. In April, the network announced plans to air the final four installments. They start running tonight.
Guggenheim recently told SCI FI Wire, “I have to say these four are among my favorite of the whole series run, quite frankly. I just feel like, ironically, we ended up getting cancelled right around the time we were really hitting on all cylinders.”
So, will the fans finally get some closure?
The series finale, titled “Flight Path,” is set to air on July 11th and will bring the series full circle. Guggenheim said, “For those people familiar with the pilot and fans of the show, we return to the Himalayas. That was in the very first episode. So there’s a sense of closure with that last episode. We returned to the scene of the crime, as it were.”

The co-creator promises that the last episode will give an ending of sorts to the series. He noted, “We wrote it knowing that we were on the bubble, so we wrote it to work like it could be a mid-season finale or it could be a series finale. It has a real satisfying sense of closure.”
After all this time, Guggenheim is very happy that the final episodes of Eli Stone are finally being aired. He related, “I have to say the worst part about being canceled was the possibility that these episodes wouldn’t get aired. Because, first and foremost, a lot of very talented, hardworking people gave their all to write, produce and film these episodes.”
“Especially episode 13, ‘Flight Path,’ because that was produced when we knew we were canceled. We had written it beforehand, but it was actually filmed around the time we learned of our cancellation, and yet no one phoned anything in. You see the episode, and you see the level of ambition from the plane crash to the Himalayas to everything in between, and you go, ‘Wow! That was everyone trying to leave on the best note possible.’ I’m just really glad that everyone’s hard work is going to get a chance to shine.”
Though Guggenheim has moved on and is working on a new ABC series, FlashForward, he’s very grateful to Eli Stone’s loyal audience. To them, he wanted to say, “Just thank you for all your support. Thanks for watching. Thank you for posting. Thank you for creating Web sites. I’ve always said that I would rather have the number of viewers that we had — even though it wasn’t enough to keep us on the air — I would rather have the number of viewers that we had with all of them loving the show as they did, than three times the number of viewers — while that number might have kept us on the air — that didn’t care about the show as much as all the people who watched.”

best show, along with “studio 60 on the sunset strip” of the last 5 years. unfortunately, intelligence is a negative for television and it’s audience. can you believe eli was once married to angelina jolie? dude’s a lot smarter than we give him credit for.
@neal YOU may not give Jonny Lee Miller a lot of “credit” but he is more than “Sick Boy” in Trainspotting. Marriage to Angelina Jolie REALLY wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be as Angelina’s long affair with Brad Pitt has shown…Along with adopting 7 or 8 orphans from other countries. Jonny now plays Sherlock Holmes in NYC AND COMPLETED SIX SEASONS as a consultant with NYPD. Jonny continues to change after a fifth season ON CBS where the show’s schedule has been held up by NFL games and other belittlements. He has played Frankenstein’s monster to Benedict Cumberbatch’s BBC… Read more »
I am really upset that they are shutting down the show. It is probably the best TV series created in the last 5 years. There is no violence, killing, drug pushers..etc On the contrary it is very refreshing and humanitarian.
I do hope that some other network will bring it back to air for one more year or two. I am from South America and we follow Eli Stone weekly on Sony Channel.
My husband and I loved Eli Stone. It is/was a gem. If it had come out 10 years ago it would have had a good run. In this rapidly evolving media climate, I guess we’re going to have to change the way we think about “series”. In recent months there have been some really great shows (creative, well written, good characters) but their times slots get jostled around and just as a fan-base is getting established they are canned. Quality doesn’t mean much anymore. If it’s not “sticky” like a youtube video, it gets the hook. It’s hard to be… Read more »
I am gutted that Eli will not return for a 3rd series! I loved it heaps! It was so refreshing and funny and am so proud of jonny lee miller! The UK boy done good! We all gotta club together to get this show back!
I didn’t know Eli had returned until I stumbled on it half way through last night.I love this show and the values it promotes.I will make certain I don’t miss the next three episodes but wish it would continue for many more seasons!
It is the only decent show I watched regularly during it’s 2 seasons…what a disappointment, finally a show with ethics, integrity and “Spirit”,only to be discarded by ABC.It used to be my favorite network, but no longer.
I’m from new york city, and this was an awesome show, i hope they bring it back sometime, i’m sure it’ll make them tons of money =)
I don’t know why the networks would expect people to watch any of their shows. Everyone knows that just when they get emotionally invested in the characters and story the network will either cancel the show or move it to another night where people have conflicts and can no longer watch it and then they will cancel the show. I really enjoyed Eli Stone and Pushing Daisies. They weren’t your typical crime or hospital shows. They were well written and had great actors. I do thank ABC for airing the final episodes instead of just letting them collect dust and… Read more »
I’m from Panama, and I got hooked from the first moment I watched that show
It has something different that keeps you watching it no matter what, when I got to find that it was cancelled it was a big blow because it’s one of the best series I’ve seen…
Different, fresh new style…
Thanks for having this final episodes
This show surprised me, it ´s been my favorite serie and I´m so sad for it´s being canceled. Congratulations to this team, that brought a show with so important humanitary values…
Best show in a long time, I’ve watched TV since the 1950’s. This was a one of a kind show where I could hardly wait for the next episode. When it ended with Eli bleeding, I couldn’t believe that was all there was to the show. It reminded me of the final episode to “Soap”…not much in the way of closure. Thank you to the powers that be for bringing back the final episodes.
Long live Eli!
I thoroughly enjoyed this show. I hate to burst anyone’s bubble but honestly, money IS the only thing that matters in TV.
You didn’t “burst any bubbles.” Unfortunately money along with unmitigated power runs every government, every country now.
i just discovered Eli Stone a month ago… since i’m from Portugal, only now they are running the show on a channel…wich i don’t have… So i can’t be usefull for audience, but i love the way this show turned out.. Just like Carnivàle, Eli Stone is for me one of the biggest losses on TV.. Brand new episodes with brand new stories, a great way of expressing good and honourable toughts and actions is what gave Eli Stone a place in my heart… I’m so sorry this ended, i’d really love to see it kicking back again… Isn’t there… Read more »
I truly loved this show. It had drama, comedy, music and the stars were great especially Eli, Maggie and Frank. It certainly was a refreshing change from violence, murder and reality shows. Reality shows only show the worst side of humanity. It was just a fun show. At least ABC brought back the last few episodes of season2.
We can only hope some other network sees the light and brings the show back for another season. I can’t believe money is the only thing that matters in TV.
Frank? You mean Dr. Chen?
I adored this show. And just like Pushing Daisies, I didn’t realize how much I’d missed these characters till the show came back on last night.
I really couldn’t stand this show for some reason. But it was nice to have a show on that didn’t center around cops or a hospital.
