Last November, ABC opted not to order any additional episodes of Eli Stone’s second season, effectively cancelling the drama. The series’ co-creator, Marc Guggenheim, held out hope that the network might still order a third round.
The chances of that happening were very remote and they were finally put to rest in May when ABC announced its new schedule and Eli Stone wasn’t on it. In April, the network announced plans to air the final four installments. They start running tonight.
Guggenheim recently told SCI FI Wire, “I have to say these four are among my favorite of the whole series run, quite frankly. I just feel like, ironically, we ended up getting cancelled right around the time we were really hitting on all cylinders.”
So, will the fans finally get some closure?
The series finale, titled “Flight Path,” is set to air on July 11th and will bring the series full circle. Guggenheim said, “For those people familiar with the pilot and fans of the show, we return to the Himalayas. That was in the very first episode. So there’s a sense of closure with that last episode. We returned to the scene of the crime, as it were.”

The co-creator promises that the last episode will give an ending of sorts to the series. He noted, “We wrote it knowing that we were on the bubble, so we wrote it to work like it could be a mid-season finale or it could be a series finale. It has a real satisfying sense of closure.”
After all this time, Guggenheim is very happy that the final episodes of Eli Stone are finally being aired. He related, “I have to say the worst part about being canceled was the possibility that these episodes wouldn’t get aired. Because, first and foremost, a lot of very talented, hardworking people gave their all to write, produce and film these episodes.”
“Especially episode 13, ‘Flight Path,’ because that was produced when we knew we were canceled. We had written it beforehand, but it was actually filmed around the time we learned of our cancellation, and yet no one phoned anything in. You see the episode, and you see the level of ambition from the plane crash to the Himalayas to everything in between, and you go, ‘Wow! That was everyone trying to leave on the best note possible.’ I’m just really glad that everyone’s hard work is going to get a chance to shine.”
Though Guggenheim has moved on and is working on a new ABC series, FlashForward, he’s very grateful to Eli Stone’s loyal audience. To them, he wanted to say, “Just thank you for all your support. Thanks for watching. Thank you for posting. Thank you for creating Web sites. I’ve always said that I would rather have the number of viewers that we had — even though it wasn’t enough to keep us on the air — I would rather have the number of viewers that we had with all of them loving the show as they did, than three times the number of viewers — while that number might have kept us on the air — that didn’t care about the show as much as all the people who watched.”

I cannot believe such a great show has been canceled. Its hard to find an uplifting show like Eli Stone, me and my family will miss it greatly.
I’m not sure how I missed the news that Eli Stone was cancelled!! But I’m very upset about it! There’s soooo much crap on TV these days, and this show is not crap! With the way the world is now, the last thing we need is more “reality tv” which isn’t as real at most think! A good hearted upl lifting show is hard to find! And now, it’s even harder w/ Eli gone!!
Best of luck to all the actors, hope to see them soon elsewhere!!!
ABC what are you thinking? A good show with excellent content and superior actors will be cancelled so that you can fill your lineup with those mindless reality shows. Good thing after the final episode of Eli Stone, we will turn off the TV. There is NOTHING on ABC anymore. It used to be our favorite channel. I don’t have cable TV so I will be reading more in the future. I am sad for all the people who make these thoughtless decisions. Will miss Eli Stone very much.
I am so irritated with ABC. This is such a great and uplifting show. I suppose you have found some stupid reality garbage with more sex to replace it. I am just disgusted with ABC at this point……
It’s a shame that a show with heart and a conscience is being cancelled to make room for more mindless “reality” shows. I’m not sure whose reality they depict; certainly not mine. I hope some network has enough character to bring Eli Stone back to the air waves.
My family and I are VERY disappointed with the cancellation of Eli Stone. It is a bright light in the maze of gory hospital and poliice shows. Or worse yet, the “Reality
competions which are glutting the air waves.
I’ve liked ABC for putting great shows such as Lost, Eli Stone, etc. I really wish they could have considered keeping Eli Stone going — such a great show. I hope another network picks it up.
ABC, you suck. I am so tired of you cancelling good shows. Eli Stone, Men in Trees, October Road, Samantha Who?. You really suck.
Forget ABC!
How insulting is it that they chose to air the final four episodes on Saturday evenings – not to mention that one is being broadcast tonight, a national holiday, when the majority of people will be out watching fireworks! Ain’t THAT a slap in the face?
Personally, my last-ditch effort to save the show is directed at USA Network/NBCU; I sincerely believe that they are the loyal viewers’ only hope.
Eli Stone is the best written show on TV . It’s cancellation is a great disappointment. I sincerely hope the network will reconsider or another network will pick it up for future seasons. Let’s bring Eli Stone back!
Like others here, I was sad to learn Eli Stone had been canceled. It was one of the shows I slotted in my DVR…not all shows are so lucky! lol It was such a unique blend of inspiration, drama, and humor. I’ve really loved the more recent episodes…although I was truly hoping to see some serious closure with maggie and eli!! I’ll keep watching to the bittersweet end!! I would like to say that network execs need to understand that the world of television has evolved…they can’t just rely on the nielson ratings from a few random homes…I watch television… Read more »
If the people at the ABC network are not smart enough to see that Eli Stone is one of the best shows ever, then they should get out of the industry. Maybe there is someone smart enough at another network to realize the potential of picking up the series where ABC left off. I would be more than willing to follow Eli Stone to another network anytime.
One of the only reasons I watched ABC. I must say disappointed doesn’t cover it. All I know is I will be more reluctant to watch any new ABC shows in the fall for fear of cancelation. Heck come to think of it… I don’t think my DVR records anything on ABC anymore… after canceling Men in Trees and Women’s Murder Club….
I was so excited to see new episodes of Eli Stone pop into my DVR. Then just as quickly heartbroken to hear that it had been canceled. As stated by other users it was quite refreshing to see a show with morals and integrity. Everything these days seems to rely on sex, drugs and violence. This show could stand on its own without resulting to this. I hope that ABC reconsiders their decision or that it is picked up by another (better) channel that recognizes quality programming. I am really going to miss this show.
I am a HUGE Eli Stone fan. What a cool show. I got online after seeing two episodes air out o f the blue, hoping it was coming back…but alas! So sad!
