Last year, The Expanse TV show was the highest-rated show on Syfy. Will it continue to be a top draw for the cable channel? Will the ratings rise or fall? Will The Expanse be cancelled or renewed for a third season? Stay tuned.
The Expanse is based on the James S. A. Corey book series. It’s set centuries into the future where Earth’s population has ballooned to over 30 billion and humans have colonized the solar system. Police detective Miller (Thomas Jane) and his crew must unravel a conspiracy that threatens peace and the survival of humanity. The rest of the Syfy cast includes Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams, Chad L. Coleman, and Shawn Doyle.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: The first season of The Expanse on Syfy averaged a 0.22 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 703,000 total viewers (live + same day).
What do you think? Do you like The Expanse TV series on Syfy? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a third season?
3/16/17 update: Syfy has renewed The Expanse for a third season. Details here.
2/23/18 update: Season three launches on April 11, 2018. Details here.
I like The Expanse… it should definetly be renewed.
hahahahahaha look at those ratings, cancellation here we come 😀
still the 3rd highest rated show on Syfy
But there’s a big problem, every part of the demographic of people viewing this show is dropping massively. There’s no way this network is going to allow these type of fluctuations next season I don’t think you’re going to extend the show. If incorporated was canceled and the demographics of this show thinking there might not even be a season after this.
Didnt 12 monkeys get renewed for a third season with its 50% decline in ratings
Sad isn’t it. With that pathetic viewership
Also a 4th without showing season three. Do you know why? Because if they showed season 3 in a weekly slot, the season 3 ratings would have been under a 0.10 and they would have been humiliated renewing it. This is why having friends in high places is good, but it doesn’t make it right. There is a difference. The same thing might happen with Expanse, but that doesn’t make it right.
With ratings that people who ran networks used to get fired for. Just because NBC Universal doesn’t fire these losers doesn’t mean they should be employed. Ever heard of Nepotism and Cronyism? Go look them up.
I will never understand what wrong with people like you, don’t you have a life or something I mean life must be pretty sad if the best you can do is troll a comment section of a show you don’t even know… besides laughing at the best science fiction produced in the last 10 years doesn’t make you sound particulary smart….
It probably should have been cancelled, but SYFY hasn’t renewed anything that might finish with live average ratings under a 0.20 so far, so they made this the first one. However, you could consider 12 Monkeys season 4 a renewal that SYFY did before season 3 went under a 0.10 That’s why they aren’t showing season 3 in a normal format. Money is being spent on The Expanse to try and make it better, so I’ll give SYFY props for not renewing an absolute piece of JUNK.
OHCH! not bashing the show but the rating are not looking good.
Looks like there are 6 episodes left. The show can’t keep doing 0.15’s, which is what it did last night. Next season could be it if the ratings don’t go up.
This is a fantastic, well acted and well produced show! It should definitely be renewed for a third…and more…season!
I’m trying so hard to Love this show… It has some great writers and it’s been been given a great effort… I’m still waiting for another Battlestar Galactica Quality show on sci-fi… The newer one not the one from the 70s… lol …. But truly… I’m sure it will grow on me I’m currently trying to power watch it by purchasing it on Amazon… In the meantime I hope they keep it on and Sam says do you take a season or so for you to become committed… LOL… A real fan… And I want to be Once again I… Read more »
Numbers are going up! Great sign. The plot is getting really better.
After this week, the numbers went DOWN again. It is really doing a 0.198 That is LOWER than last season. There are 6 episodes left for the season(if there are 13). It might get renewed even if the ratings are lower than last season because SYFY cancelled Afterlife and Incorporated.
Episode 10, the hank Williams song being played on the Roci. Is that the same song that’s playing on a dying cassette player in Apollo 13?
From my understanding, SyFy doesn’t actually produce the show, just distributes it in the US. Alcon Entertainment makes the show. I would imagine that Netflix / Amazon would be eager to buy US distribution rights if SyFy/NBC don’t want to renew their contract for another year. Nonetheless, I think the production decision is in Alcon’s corner. I hope they renew – this show is great! Who cares about ratings anyway?
How can SYFY not have money involved in this show? The budget is way higher than last season. I guess it’s a good thing your job isn’t based on ratings. Ratings matter. This show is WORSE than Colony and hasn’t ever done as well as Colony in those things you don’t care about. I will be shocked if Alcon doesn’t bring it back unless the last 6 episodes tank last this past weeks episode did. I thought spending the extra money might get me to hang in with it, but no, it didn’t. We’ll see where the ratings are in… Read more »
Come on, Colony’s a pseudo-SF drama show, its only selling point is the couple big names actors getting some attention. It’s watchable but very average TV. Stop judging a show’s worth or quality on its ratings, saying its deserving to be axed or not because numbers are bad, so it means it must be ****, so it needs to die. If anything, TV shows today don’t need to be good, they’re all artificially manufactured bandwagons meant to create hype and indulge self-gratification to ADHD viewers that need to livetweet for 45min. As a general rule, making a good show is… Read more »
Season 2 is incredible. The book is finally coming to life and the action is intense! I would love to see this continue for the entire book set
In this show is terrible that’s not what I’m saying. But the ratings are really poor. It’s too obvious that not as many people are watching this show has network expected. It’s on the numbers look at them.
I see the point rating goes up a little. But still not where they should be.These numbers are down from season one. “IF” there is 3rd season it will be either A.) The network doesnt care about ratings B.) They have alot their monies invested in this series. C.) They just dont care
Frankly speaking, the ratings for the show is not that impressive. They can do a lot better but the show seems like it’s just stuck in a rut. I know people like the show but it seems that it constantly cannot keep good ratings it just tanks. How can this network live with these types of ratings even though neither other shows don’t get above a certain demographic rating. I’m not saying the show sucks I’m saying that the overall ratings would lead me to believe it should be canceled. They canceled Incorporated but they’re letting the show continue?I assume… Read more »
I know what you’re saying, this network is not the greatest and they have a tendency to play favorites to certain shows in some that are not their favorites get canceled. This show in fact they have invested so much money in it time that they have to keep the show on the air. Like it or not it’s still on for how long who knows.
Syfy does NOT make the show, they don’t own anything except from what they’re paying for: US-only broadcasting and limited exclusivity of its episodes online and finally a high-production value SF show like BSG in their prime. The production company (ALCON ent.) that owns The Expanse most certainly has a much wider view and takes into account worldwide distribution through Netflix, VOD numbers, US streaming on Amazon Prime, etc. If ALCON wanted the show to get millions of viewers, they wouldn’t have gone with Syfy, which means they probably have a long-term and not live-only-ratings view on all this, especially… Read more »
Not to mention the channel that has a tendency of cancelling good shows left and right. It was really hard to justify getting hooked until I saw it was renewed for season 2, and even then, the fate of SG:U leaves me nervous.
problem, this show isnt a rating holder. Nomatter who makes this show. rating where ever they coming from AP or NF ect…….the not great etc.
Best SciFi show since Battlestar Galactica. Looking forward to the renewal of this amazing show!
no offence, but everytime when I see someone says “best show since battlestar galactica” I take it as a huge offence to the expanse. Battlestar galactica was good, but compared to the expanse is a joke.
Actually, the Magicians was still the highest rated show. Looks like the Expanse will finish under a 0.20(with worse ratings than last season) but I think SYFY will bring it back. That doesn’t mean that they should.
You’re right, they shouldn’t. Netflix should bring them back, because Netflix would actually have the will to keep the show alive for fans to enjoy and to spread the word.
It’s a real shame the ratings are dipping. This second season is so far an improvement on last season’s excellence. To be honest, I think the show should just go right to Netflix everywhere, and not just outside the US and Canada. I think it would do much better.
Why did it premiere at 11pm on a weeknight? It’s not rated TV MA and is SyFy’s highest rated show. Someone in their timeslot setting group screwed up big time.
The Magicians has higher ratings. It was a two hour episode for the first episode, and it started at 10 pm eastern standard time. The ratings are already pathetic. A 0.25 is nothing to get nuts about. I didn’t think this show would do below a 0.20 live average rating for the season, but it is starting to look like it now. Another SYFY show that does worse in its second season isn’t what this network needs. They have tons of those.
I Agree. The one thing that really upsets me is that Syfy is airing box office underperformed as opposed to encore episodes of the Magicians and the Expanse.
Wow look ratings for the first episode of this year can you call this progressive? This series need help
Really? Neg 1 this and you don’t seen the ratings in the neg? Didn’t read only rate? Oh well
You consider a rating of 0.25 something great? It just did a 0.18 for this week. That’s very close to a 0.00 SYFY doesn’t need another show whose live ratings are WORSE in the second season. They have tons of those. They need this show to do Magician numbers. If it can’t, why keep renewing shows whose ratings DROP in the second season? Or third season?
Numbers are bad! I never said that they were good. and yes that show that you mentioned is what this channel needs more numbers of ….not more of this crappy stuff that they are trying to pass off on the viewers.
this is the best show since the original Star Trek. I remember watching the adds for it, thinking this is going to be great, and it was. (yes I am 60) I never liked the remake of Battlestar, the robots were people, how cheap was that! The Expanse just keeps getting better. The books are wonderful, but each medium is fabulous and unique. Every episode is a treasure, however many we get. Worthy of Heinlein and there is no higher praise!
