The ABC TV show about what happens in the future apparently doesn’t have one. FlashForward has been cancelled after one season.
FlashForward begins as the world’s population blacks out for 137 seconds and they “flash forward” to see visions of their lives six months in the future. The series’ ensemble cast includes Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Jack Davenport, Zachary Knighton, Peyton List, Dominic Monaghan, Brian F. O’Byrne, Courtney B. Vance, Sonya Walger, and Christine Woods.
The series debuted in September and attracted a 4.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 12.47 million viewers. With a lot of buzz, it seemed like ABC had a hit. For week two, the ratings dropped to a still very respectable 3.7 and 10.73 million.
But then viewership just kept falling, hitting a low of a 2.1 in the key demo and just 7.1 million viewers. Then, ABC pulled the series for three months. The spin was that they would relaunch FlashForward after the Olympics.
The network gave the return a significant amount of promotion but it didn’t help. FlashForward’s ratings were even worse and they just kept dropping. They’ve gotten so bad that The CW has been beating them in the demo.
To no surprise, ABC has cancelled FlashForward after one season of 20 episodes. The series finale will air in two weeks, on May 27th.
What do you think? Did FlashForward deserve a second season? Could ABC have saved it? If given the chance, how would you wrap it up?

It is a shame. I thought this show was fantastic. It is the only show I watch on ABC and it get cancelled after one season.
The story was compelling, but it will soon be over. Not to mention V is just a boring show. The ratings were nearly the same but V has a whole 8 episodes. No doubt they will get worse.
Not to mention when the series returned it was on at the same time as Survivor. It is hard to believe, but something I have to deal with.
Hate you ABC.
I have a novel idea! Maybe they can put on a talent show in its place.
This is so sad:-( I’ll miss Flash Forward a lot.
Does Flash forward deserve a season 2? Without a doubt it should be at least reconsidered. The fact that it did not air for such a long time played a large roll in the significant rating drop. The anticipation of what was going to happen next was the shows niche’ then when they took it off for so long the excitement was gone. We were just happy to see if finally come back on. If the absence of the show was not enough to kill viewership the storyline after the shows return simply lost it’s momentum and didn’t capture the… Read more »
Absolutely dissapointed… Even though here in Costa Rica we are waaay behind (we just watched the double 11-12 episode about two days ago, on AXN), it’s just a great story!! All of my classmates love it, and our age range is somewhat wide for a Costa Rican class: from 15 to 19 years old….
I am really really dissapointed. There’s no other word to explain it…
ABC, Flash Forward 6 months into the network’s future and you’ll see that canceling the show was a HUGE MISTAKE! How could you have invested so much time into such a great story line and characters and then so little time into allowing it to mature into the television icon that it could be along the lines of Star Trek? Rethink this one guys…seriously!
Sad. There are very few programs on television that are actually worthwhile. REALITY TV is HORRIBLE! Can we just have at least one program with a decent story line that keeps you slightly engaged? Flash Forward was the only show we watched on TV at all. Sorry, cable company you just lost a customer…no need for television in our house anymore.
Please don’t cancel Flashforward! What a great show. Was very sad to hear of its fate and can imagine the 3 month hiatus earlier in the year certainly did not help things. Please bring it back ABC. It was an intelligent persons television show. It had everything, drama, suspense, romance, humor and a wonderfully diversified cast. Very disappointed, and hopeful that if enough folks complain, it will return.
Yes, this is our age group and Flash Forward is simply our favorite show. Thursday evening is off limits to all plans and the event of the evening so that we can see the next exciting episode. I echo all of the other commentors on asking ABC to NOT cancel this show, but instead put the ingenious writers to work on yet another edge-of-your-seat-action-packed season. Plus we have become totally fond of the characters, and we want to see Janis and Demetris’s offspring!
ABC, please do not cancel Flash Forward!
I am so dissapointed upon hearing the news that Flash Forward is going to be cancelled. My teenage kids and I couldn’t wait to watch it every week. One of few shows we watched as a family. It is one of the Best shows on TV. I can’t believe the ratings were that low. Well maybe I can… it was probably too sophisticated for most or came too close for comfort to some …
ABC , please re think this and don’t cancel Flash Forward
Oh,it’s not fair!!!it was a very very sad news!how could this happen?huh?abc!please do not cancel it!please!Flashforward has a alot of fans all over the world!!!you don’t believe how sad my family and my friends are.please do not cancel it
So sad. We loved this show and looked forward to it every week. There is only one other show we watch and this is it’s final season so I guess we can just put away the remote and go back to books and board games.
I am so disappointed I cannot even start to explain it! I am so hooked on this show. Very few times you experience a TV show that is worth watching because of its quality, plot, acting and its brilliant story! Very sad news 🙁 I hope they at least make an effort to wrap it up successfully, that’s if they still respect us as an audience.
The 3-month break probably didn’t do much to help keep viewers. I was really starting to dig the show and now it’s being canceled. Typical network move, though. Apparently we need more idiotic, brain-dead sitcoms and reality shows.
How disappointing. Every time there is an intelligent program, it gets cancelled. I’m soooooo tired of all the silly fodder for brain-dead couch dwellers, like Dancing with the… and those horrid reality shows.
Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.
Why is it that a show has to be canceled as soon as it challenges a viewer to think a bit! Only mindless apes know how to use remote controls and zap away. If ABC decided to stop banning European viewers from fabulous shows and gave us a chance to login and pay for an episode we wouldn’t need to download these shows illegally and we’ll be able to support good shows. Isn’t that what you need.. funding? We live in a digital age, as if viewers overseas will watch a show (on their home Network) a TV season after… Read more »
Very Bummed. ABC…you didn’t even give it a chance. We’ve looked forward to it every week and now this. Of course the same thing happened with “Traveler,” “Journeyman,” and “Moonlight.” All great shows that weren’t even given a chance and were all cancelled. I think we are done getting into any new shows. This seems to happen to often and it’s just not worth getting invested into them, only to have them pulled by impatient executives. No more new shows for us!! Shame on you ABC!!
