God Friended Me just wrapped its series finale, so what’s next? Recently, creators Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt spoke with Deadline about the cancelled CBS TV show and the possible future of the series.
The series revolves around a thoughtful and outspoken podcaster named Miles (Brandon Micheal Hall) whose life is turned upside down when he receives a friend request on social media from a user named “God.” The cast also includes Violett Beane, Joe Morton, Suraj Sharma, Javicia Leslie, and Erica Gimpel, with Adam Goldberg and Jessica Lu recurring.
In the interview, Lilien and Wynbrandt told Deadline their season three plans for God Friended Me had CBS renewed the series:
We would have loved to explored Rakesh and Jaya’s ongoing story, we wanted her to get pregnant and see how they would deal with it and what becoming a father would mean for Rakesh. That was a big story we wanted to explore. We also wanted to explore Miles’ relationship with the atheist podcaster that we mention in the finale, we wanted Miles to be lured over to work at his company to start a podcast, to see that relationship and how that would change Miles’ perspective on being someone who is a voice piece for atheism and young millennials.
The two creators also discussed how they turned the show’s season two finale into a series finale after finding out God Friended Me had been cancelled:
I feel relieved that we have an ending that we feel is satisfactory. We were in New York directing this episode and had to pull the plug and we had no real idea if we were going to get to finish. Then a couple of weeks ago, conversations with Warner Bros and CBS started to lean towards us not getting a renewal, so Steven and I crafted a plan to finish the finale. We’d only filmed five days so we had to get crafty and pull footage from previous episodes. The fact that we were able to pull it off was a pretty monumental thing, and we’re pretty proud of it.”
And what about continuing the series as a podcast since the main character, Miles, is a podcaster? Wynbrandt said that is a possibility:
Brandon Michael Hall has talked to us about that on occasion. Currently we are just winding down out of the editorial phase of the finale, so no plans currently, but you may want to keep your ears open for it.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of God Friended Me? Would you listen to a podcast version?

So disappointed. Would follow it on any medium.
Why would such a great feel good show be taken off the air so soon. Especially in our world now we all need,God. It was refreshing not to have crime and hate but love. Our world needs more shows like this. Disappointed. Bring it back!!!!
I’m sooo upset. God friended me was one of the few positive shows on tv. I love the characters and the inspirational messages. In a world full of negativity and divisiveness this has been a breath of fresh air.
Please bring the show back.
Make it an amazon series. We usually watched it on Demand.
Love the show. Please continue, however possible.
Disappointing that another family friendly show has been cancelled. Many good life lessons were being taught without the violence other shows have.
I am a huge fan of the show never missed an episode and I feel a podcast wouldn’t do it justice
My husband, son and I looked forward to this show each Sunday evening. The stories were so meaningful and uplifting. The characters were so great and I will miss them so much. Miles was such a special and caring guy. I feel this show made my husband think more about his faith since he tends to be agnostic. I hope this show can be brought back somehow. We need more shows like this!
I really enjoyed the whole concept and love the positive ending each episode had. I was sadden and disappointed after hearing of the cancelation. I feel there was alot of life still in the series. One show that I look forward to each week. Taped them all! I had many friends that felt the same way. Hope something can be worked out! Thanks for a show that made you feel good for a world that is so negative today and Godless.
I.loved this show and looked forward to my Sunday nights. Sometimes it was a little tough to except some of the story line at the end it all blended and left you with a feeling of happiness and a want to see more. Loved all the players and wanted them to continue in the paths they were on as it just opened up many more episodes. Please bring it back if you can but not sure if I would be interested ain a podcast.
I LOVED GOD FRIENDED ME! It was very thought provoking, creative, and also interesting to see the unfolding of what many would call a miracle, while still many others would call coincidence. I believe in GOD incidents, so I was hooked!!! I will miss this breath of fresh air…..in a day when people truly need HOPE a program like THIS should NOT be cancelled, but rather it should REMAIN ON THE AIR to give people in despair their hope back…..and possibly do what air does best, give life
Resuscitate our people….PLEASE
I love this show!! Please do whatever can be done to continue it!!! It breaks my heart that i read it is being cancelled. I would even stay to listen to podcasts if it was truly miles doing them, even tho the podcasts dont convey the entire story
The interaction of the amazing actors and great story lines is what made the show. I don’t think a podcast would cut it.
Love the show, one of the few still worth watching, please bring it back!
It is very disappointing that a production being aired in this time of trouble can get the interest of believers, agnostics, atheists, to good things done without discord and violence can’t make it.
Great comment I was having coffee before watching last episode not knowing it had been cancelled and thinking how it is the one show that can bring atheist and faithful people together. My heart sank when I finished watching it I knew they had cancelled it.
