Why did CBS just cancel most of their new TV shows? Recently, network boss Kelly Kahl spoke with Deadline about the decision to cancel Broke, Carol’s Second Act, Tommy, and God Friended Me.
With the exception of God Friended Me, which wrapped its second season this spring, all the shows cancelled debuted during the 2019-20 season. CBS also cancelled Man with a Plan, which is currently airing its fourth season.
Speaking to Deadline, Kahl revealed it was a “tough” decision to cancel Broke, God Friended Me, Carol’s Second Act, and Tommy:
At the end of the day they weren’t doing the numbers we were hoping for, and despite liking them creatively, knowing timely decisions were upon us, we had to make tough calls to move on from those shows. You want to keep them all for another season; that’s what makes these calls tough. You invest a lot of time and effort and people put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into these shows, and when you have to say goodbye. It’s a tough call.”
What do you think? Did you watch any of CBS’ cancelled series? Would you have watched another season?
Just admit, y’all ran out of ideas and be done with it.
Tommy was one of the best shows on tv. It was well written, interesting characters and plot. It wasn’t even given a full season! Also it was on during the pandemic many people are binge watching on streaming networks.CBS needs shows like this to keep viewers. I’m tired of everything being skewed to millennials. People over 49 watch tv and have disposable income. I don’t understand how that doesn’t translate to advertisers. I refuse to watch the brain numbing reality shows! I believe this was a poor decision and should soon be reconsidered. Otherwise wise it’s beginning to look like… Read more »
Personally, I loved Tommy the most, all the shows were great, if I must pick I would to see Tommy come back!!!
Tommy was an excellent program. The reason that streamed content is eating your lunch is because you have no idea how to develop a following. Stats aren’t everything.
God friended me was one of the best shows on television, he made a big mistake. But all the crap that’s on TV you cancel that special, moving series. Shame on you
I really enjoyed Tommy and was hoping for more seasons. What a disappointment.
Geez, I was just starting to get into Tommy..I would’ve loved to watch another season…Why do y’all make us invest time and emotional connections with characters, just to strip them away from the viewer when we have already dug our heels in to a storyline and support the show??!! Please, Any explaination will do!
Signed, Concerned Viewer.
I really liked Tommy and was looking forward to another season. It had realistic story lines and characters. I don’t understand why it was canceled when there are so many mind numbing progams on network and cable TV.
Poor taste on your part to cancel “God FRIENDED Me. Your Sunday-night line up was the best of the 3 networks. Now it’s the worst with movies you must have dug up from the basement floor
I liked them all, but especially Tommy. It was very well written and acted. I need to know what happens with the mayor. Bring it back! Or maybe another network or streaming will pick it up. Please
I love God Friended Me and Tommy..fresh new ideas with a good mix of people
Tommy was an excellent show–lots of strong female characters, good story arc, diverse cast. Shame on you, CBS, for not keeping this show another season. And God Friended Me was quirky, enjoyable and kind. Another loss.
Loved Tommy. Sad to lose it.
The week before Broke was canceled there was a promo about it being the number 1 new something. I watched all of these shows. It’s really a shame that CBS didn’t give these shows a chance to find an audience.
You made a terrible mistake canceling Tommy. Edie Falco has a tremendous following. And this was a well written series. Once again CBS is blowing it. No wonder few watch TV anymore. You can order exactly what you want on Netflix, Amazon Video, etc. Networks just do what they want. Not what we want.
