Tonight we bid adieu to Lost after six seasons on the air. The series finale had a lot to live up to and, without question, it wasn’t going to please everyone.
The producers have long said that the series was about the people. The title referred to their place in life and, through their experience, they grew and changed. In the end, all of our Losties (and many of their loved ones) are all together again, bound by the most important time in their lives — their time on the island.
In looking at the immediate reaction, it seems that many people feel cheated. I think it stems from (I believe) the misconception that the characters were dead the whole time.
We were told that the Losties were not dead and not in purgatory and they weren’t. Their experience on the island was real. They were all dead by the end of the show, in the church — a place they all created so that they could reunite once they had each passed away. As Christian told his son, some of them died before Jack did (on the island) and some died after.
What did you think of the series finale of Lost? Satisfying or upsetting? Love it or hate it? How does this one rank against other series finales?
UPDATE: If you were confused by the final images, blame ABC.
that wast the worst ending to a show that I regrettably devoted four years to hoping that eventually the subplots and mysteries would be explained. well that didn’t happen in the least—-STUPID and terrible writing
First let me say good bye to the most enigmatic, emotional and soul full show of all time. I loved every moment of the finale. I love how everything was wrapped up together, they all did an amazing job. I wanted answers so bad, but I think LOST did something even more amazing, is left us with a bewilderment wonder. I love how it all ended the way it began, it was nice to see jack closing his eyes and Vincent appearing beside him before he passed on. For me it really is about the journey and the people you… Read more »
They weren’t dead from the moment they hit the island. Everyone died at different times. Some deaths we saw, like Charlie, Boon, Sayid, Jin, Sun, Faraday, and lastly Jack, others we didn’t see, like Ben, Kate, Claire, Hugo, Miles and Sawyer. Everything on the Island was REAL. That place is real and it exists and always will exist. Ben and Hugo stayed behind and looked after it. Ben became the new Richard, and Hugo became the new Jacob. They died sometime way after everyone else. The alt-verse was a purgatory of sorts, a place they all created to find everyone… Read more »
I cant believe they ended up in purgatory(am not saying the entire show took place in purgatory, just that it ended there). My friends predicted this ending 5 seasons ago.
Sorry, folks. I didn’t like it. I feel like they started one story and ended another. The strong, complex, and nuanced writing that truly earned this show its reputation, only gave us, in my opinion, a very weak ending.

so jack at the end saw the plane leave and everything at the end, was that real? Then when they were gathering at the church at the end, how was it related to the “real” world that jack saw before he really died.
@bobby robby: Yes. Kate and the others got off the island and Jack died, in the same place where he woke up in the pilot episode. If you recall, Kate told Jack at the concert/party that she’d missed him for so long. She obviously had a long life after the island.
@Jon
Then why are you posting in a Lost related forum?
@Bart H.
I think you need to watch the finale again…it sounds like you didn’t understand it, brother.
For me, the most emotionally charged part of the finale was when Jack finally laid to rest in that familiar bamboo patch and Vincent came running to him.
For a few brief moments before that tears welled in my eyes as I said “please don’t let him die alone”. Wish granted =D
LOVED IT! I am curious to see how many people weren’t able to keep up because they will be the ones who hated it…but I loved every subtle detail. I love how Eloise wanted them to leave everything the way it is in the alt-timeline because she was experiencing time with her son as a family. You are right about Christian telling him that some died before, and some dying way after. I can imagine that Hurley and Ben probably died much much later.
I felt it was an amazing ending.
I think it was a terrific finish to a brilliant series. The final sequence brought the show back to the essence of what it is about: the people, and the connections that they make in their lives. There are many questions left in the air, and many answers, I think, in plain sight. But the true brilliance of the finale is that it didn’t leave behind the characters in a dustbowl of action and overextension of plot.
I felt like it was a lovely ending, but weak. While it did a nice job of tying all the relationships together, it sort of invalidated much of the material that got it there. It treaded the line of being hackneyed (“they were already dead”, “it was all just a dream”), and unfortunately the reality of the island (Dharma initiative, strange forces, the Jacob mythology) and it’s mysteries die with the series’ ending.
what in the world happened – _ –
I’ve heard so many people say the Losties were dead the whole time. Idiots.
Beautiful. As good as I had hoped for!
Lost interest after Season 2. Didn’t watch. Don’t care. Doesn’t appear that I missed much (given the reactions I’ve read). Glad I didn’t invest four additional seasons in this show.
Then what was the point in coming on here and commenting?
