TV show description:
Based on the 1980s Tom Selleck vehicle from Donald P. Bellisario and Glen A. Larson, the new Magnum PI TV show was developed for television by Peter M. Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim. The action-adventure crime drama centers on private investigator Thomas Magnum (Hernandez).
Upon returning home from Afghanistan, Magnum, a decorated former Navy SEAL, decides to put his military skills to use as a P.I. He also lives in a guest cottage on the Robin’s Nest estate, where he serves as a security consultant. In addition to being a bonafide American hero, Magnum is a devout Detroit Tigers fan and something of a charmer.
A beautiful, impressive, and disavowed MI:6 agent, Juliet Higgins (Weeks) serves as the estate’s majordomo. She too has a second job — keeping Magnum in line, which she does with a little help from her two Dobermans.
When Magnum needs help on a case, he calls in his former comrades-in-arms, POW survivors Theodore “TC” Calvin (Hill) and Orville “Rick” Wright (Knighton). TC was a Marine chopper pilot and now runs Island Hoppers, a helicopter tour business. Meanwhile, former gunner Rick now runs a hot nightclub on Oahu and has connections all over the island.
Detective Gordon Katsumoto (Kang) isn’t thrilled that Magnum shows up at so many of his crime scenes, and the PI’s casual demeanor also gets under his skin. Katsumoto would be hard-pressed to admit how similar he and Magnum are at heart, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true.
Rounding out the crew is Teuila “Kumu” Tuileta, who serves as the “House Mom” and cultural curator at the Robin’s Nest. Magnum is ready to crack the case with his team at the ready, a vintage Ferrari at his disposal, and his trademark aviator sunglasses.
Series Finale:
Episode #96 — The Big Squeeze
Magnum and Higgins take a major step forward in their relationship. At the same time, the past comes back to haunt them when a previous suspect becomes their client. TC aims to scale up Island Hoppers. Rick gets a new business partner.
First aired: January 3, 2024.
What do you think? Do you like the Magnum PI TV series? Do you think NBC should have cancelled or renewed the series for a sixth season?
Well …. I tried a few episodes but I just can’t do it . With full intentions of not filling the shoes of the original, it fell flat as expected. Radical departures in writing reboots never fares well… that being said Hernandez is solid but lacking charm and lilt with his Magnum 2.0 character. The target audience is unclear to me , if it’s like the original series then “new” Thomas Magnum needs to have his shirt off more often to keep women interested. The attempt at witty banter between Higgy baby and magnum can only be believable if there’s… Read more »
Cancel. There is only one Magnum PI. Some shows are not meant to be remade.
Please cancel. So unbelievable. No comparison to the original. The the 2 main characters are wrong. RIC and TC are good. I avoid the show.
The new Magnum P.I. doesn’t have enough scenes with the Dobermans. In the original series, Msgnum was always being chased, growled at, etc by Zeus and Apollo. It’s won of the things I loved about the original show. The writers need to include them more. Higgins was also never without the ‘lads’, so put them in the show more often!
I am sure this show will be renewed for a second season. The major problem with this rebooted version of “Magnum” is that it takes itself too seriously and lacks the humour which made the original magic.
Wife and I are baby boomers, love this fun and moving Magnum. Keep the show, be patient and please give us 3 seasons.
Great Show And Cast.
Hope to See Many More Episodes!
We were so excited, but after two episodes, it is just too flat and poorly written. Very disappointed, had high hopes for something fun.
Good start hard not to compare to Old one but the actors are giving it a good tr. Like Higgins!
I loved the show. Hope it last a long time. Don’t cancel it….
This show is horrible. It is just a redo of Hawaii Five 0 . Nothing different when it comes to action and concept. The writing is probably the worst part except maybe having Jay as the lead. …that comes pretty close to the worst part too. Time to say aloha to this one and have the meaning of it be goodbye.
I liked the show , is it 1982 ? No it is not. Jay even said he didn’t want to copy Tom , it couldn’t be done . This is a new take on the show form the 1980’s . That show belongs to Tom . Like most everything it will mold itself into a really good TV show . It is getting better and better as it goes it’s growing pains . I’m going to watch it and record it all the weeks it is on . Thank you to the cast and crew . A fan in Covina… Read more »
I’ve tried to like but ain’t happening, a 5’9” skinny guy acting like a tough guy that saves Hawaii isn’t working. Let’s start over with someone new
I agree
Not impressed! Would rather watch the old series! If your going to remake it, make the characters close to the original! Disappointed and would not watch it ever!
Sorry. The new Magnum PI sucks big time.
If you do a remake. Just try to make it good and not a cheap story. We all compare this to the old 80ies version and to be better then that you really should try harder.
Higgins as a woman? Tomas Magnum as a short guy with no mustach?
Nope. im out…
My fellow military veterans who attend meetings at VA facilities are enthused about the new Magnum P I TV show — especially Juliet-Higgins ! Please — continue the show!
