Tonight, we say goodbye to one of television’s most beloved and unique detectives. Adrian Monk is certainly an unlikely hero and it’s perhaps for that reason that viewers will miss him so.
Monk tells the tale of a brilliant San Francisco detective (Tony Shalhoub) who, following the death of his wife in a car bombing, has a nervous breakdown. After being a recluse for three years, Monk returns to the force, barely able to control his obsessive-compulsive disorder. While his phobias often make it difficult for him to function, he’s an incredibly observant sleuth in part because of them.
The long-running USA series has also featured the talents of Jason Gray-Stanford, Ted Levine, Traylor Howard, Stanley Kamel, Bitty Schram, Emmy Clarke, Kane Ritchotte, and Hector Elizondo.

While filming the last episode, Howard, who’s played Monk’s assistant Natalie for the past five years, reflected on the end of the show and her co-star. She said, “It doesn’t seem quite real… It’ll be weird not to work with Tony a lot. He’s such a lovely man. And I adore him, and it’s such a great part for a woman and all that stuff.”
Shalhoub didn’t want to know how his character’s story would finish until it was time to shoot the last episodes. He says that he likes the way the show is going out and shared, “When I read the finale, I was really moved and very satisfied. It exceeded my expectations. I thought it was going to be tricky to pull off. It’s a daunting episode emotionally. I discovered, once I was in it, that it all started to come to me. I had been loaded up for eight years.”
In terms of the finale being satisfying for fans, Shalhoub said, “I think what they will feel is kind of a magnification of what I believe they’ve been feeling all along, which is kind of mixed about Monk: Feel good for him, bad for him, frustrated for him… Hoping for his success and for his healing, his recovery.”
While the Monk series finale was written to give the show closure, the cast aren’t necessarily done with their characters just yet. Shalhoub shared,”We’ve talked about a Monk feature. We’ve been talking about that for a long time. The cast would love to do it. But there’s really nothing hard and fast in the pipeline.” In another interview, the actor said, “I just don’t know. I never say never.”
What do you think? Would you like to see Monk and his friends return for a movie?

Of course I’d love a movies! Monk is a so complex and amazing character and all the cast were always so great in terms of interaction to each other that I’m sure it would be easy to make a great success. And a possible plot for it could be one of Lee Goldberg’s books. He’s been doing an excellent job creating intriguing stories for these wonderful characters. I vote for a movies or at least some TV reunions, maybe in one year. Monk has turned into a classic, so all the fans like really expect a return soon.
I love the show and vote for a feature TV movie that follows with how the characters have progressed
J
would love to see a couple of movies throughout the year!
Who sang the closing song on the finale?
@Cheri: Randy Newman.
The character “Monk” is the most desirable type of Man in the world. I adore him every bit as much as he adores Trudy. I will miss this tv show more than any other I have ever watched. The entire cast was excellent. I am so….sad because of the canelation…
I love Monk, and the series finale was terrific. I just have one opinion: Monk & Natalie belong together. I am glad that Monk ended up being happy, though. I hope for a movie!
Would you watch a spin-off of Chief Disher (Randy) and Sharona in the small town in NJ with guest appearance by Stottlemyer (sp?) and Monk from time to time as Randy has to solve crimes with the help of Sharona?
I think that would be a Great idea…..I was thinking about that myself. You could even call it Summit!
i don’t know…..it depends on how they do it. do you think that there is enough potentiol there? i mean, i would TOTALLY watch it but Randy is no Monk. He’s kind of an idiot sometimes. no offense, he was one of my favorite characters (i love the episode where he got “free refills for life”) but all im saying is that they might run out of material quickly
Yes a series of movies like they did for Perry Mason would be great. Bringing back Monk for more seasons would also be excellant. Monk is truly a show that the whole family can enjoy watching. Even with them solving Trudy’s murder Monk would still be great. Most of his episodes were about Monk solving crimes, he could still do that. Please for all of the Monk fans bring Monk back. PLEASE
My whole family would LOVE it if there was a movie!!!
This was just about the Only show that my 9 year old could watch with me. I didn’t have to worry about covering her ears or her eyes. She was so sad tonight that it was over!!
I reassured her that with 125 espisodes I’m sure she could rewatch them and still be entertained! 🙂
BRING BACK MONK PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We’ll miss you… you old Monk you…
THE FINAL EPISODE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN BETTER. IT BROUGHT CLOSURE AND A GREAT MEASURE OF HAPPINESS FOR EVERYONE. IT WAS SATISFYING NOT TO SEE SOME STUPID NONSENSICAL ENDING. MY FAMILY WOULD LOVE TO SEE A MOVIE. PLEASE DO THEM (MAYBE MORE THAN ONE). Thank you USA Network.
They do not do shows like this anymore. A movie would be great, let’s see if it happens. Great show, enojoyed it very much during it’s 7 year run. Went out on top.
Monk will be missed.
“It’s a jungle out there”
I would of course love a movie, however, I would also like to see the show continue on weekly tv. There is nothing wrong with continuing the show now that we know how Trudy died and what happened to cause her death. Monk could keep some of his OCD traits to continue the comedy of his Monk character. This is a really GOOD weekly show, most of the characters have decent personal morals; the show is not trashy like House… I would love to see Monk become another M.A.S.H. and stay around longer than its already 8 years, and I… Read more »
A Movie!?! Heck yeah! It would be a perfect vehicle for a batch of great characters.
Monk is one of my absolute favorite shows. Yes, I’d like a movie, a reunion, another season, whatever will bring Monk back! Good luck to Tony and all the cast. I’ll miss seeing you all.
I enjoy watching Monk. His quarkiness is just one reason to love it. All the cast are fun to watch also. A very good family show to tune into every week. My husband and I will miss it. Thanks for the great entertainment!
