Malcolm’s work and family struggles are over. FOX has cancelled the Prodigal Son TV series so there won’t be a third season.
A crime thriller series, the Prodigal Son TV series stars Tom Payne, Lou Diamond Phillips, Aurora Perrineau, Frank Harts, Keiko Agena, Bellamy Young, Halston Sage, Michael Sheen, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Season two guest stars include Christian Borle and Michael Potts. In the story, Malcolm Bright (Payne) is an extraordinary criminal psychologist who knows how killers think and how their minds work. In the 1990s, his father, Dr. Martin Whitly (Sheen), was a notorious serial killer called “The Surgeon” who killed at least 23 people. Since murder is “the family business”, Malcolm uses his twisted genius for good, to help the NYPD solve crimes and stop killers. He works alongside his longtime mentor, Gil Arroyo (Phillips), and two detectives — no-nonsense Dani Powell (Perrineau) and JT Tarmel (Harts), a born-and-bred New Yorker who questions whether Bright is a psychopath himself. In season two, Malcolm must deal with the repercussions of the first season finale and his father seeks to deepen his relationship with his prodigal son.
Airing on Tuesday nights, the second season of Prodigal Son averages a 0.41 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.09 million viewers in the live+same day ratings. Compared to season one, that’s down by 45% in the demo and down by 38% in viewership.
The last episode of the second season (and the series) will air on May 18th. According to Variety, the decision to cancel the show was a tough one and noted that the network brass just didn’t feel that the ratings justified a third year. It’s not known yet if the show will be shopped to other outlets.

This cannot be true!! Prodigal Son is the best show on the air! We have watched every minute of every episode! I hope that another network picks up the show and continues the seasons. There is so much more that can be written for many more episodes!
what a shame! It’s hard to be believe that a show with so much heart and soul can be cancelled . What disappoints more than anything are the shows that have been picked up….truly nothing compares to Prodigal Son…it’s an hour of great tv and the stars are exceptional and the fact it won’t be back for another year saddens me. Fox you made a terrible decision! Hopefully another network will see what all of us see in this show…true entertainment and awesomeness.
This is one if our favorite shows I can’t believe that it will be canceled after only 2 seasons I really hope that someone else picks up this show ..I would watch on any other network…why cancel the good shows and keep all the crap shows out there
I am absolutely furious! Me and my husband my mother we all are so addicted to the show Martin Whitley is truly one of the best villains you love to hate on TV I can’t believe with all the crap that fox has on their networks they can’t make room for this diamond in the rough and give it a chance I’ve binged the whole first season in two days

My husband and I love this show. It’s one of the best shows out there. We really hope it does get shopped around and picked up by Netflix, Hulu or some other network. We’ll certainly follow it wherever it may go.

NO!!! This is my favorite show….I record everything else I watch so I can fast forward over the boring parts, but with Prodigal Son, I watch it when it airs AND record it so I can go back and re watch it again! This show is cleverly written with twists/turns, humor, and the music enhances the plot lines every week. The cast is outstanding and Dr Whitley is a “hoot”! Please give it one more season at least. Darn it!
This is a good show. This is my final year of being in the 18-49 demographic, and I was hoping on at least one more season of Prodigal Son to ride that out. It is a really good show, and the character played by Michael Sheen is delightfully evil. It is actually a pretty good bunch of actors this series managed to assemble.
A real shame, this cancellation. If Netflix, Hulu or Amazon are game, I’ll gladly continue to watch Prodigal Son there.
can a show that is unique make it past at least three season YOU HAD god friended me with 2 timeless with STUMPTOWN WITH one and even a musical comedy that had only 15 episodes as about total of two seasons in Galavant also Whiskey cavilier which had only one season as well. I’m disappointed I hope another network saves this show because its really good.
The prodigal Son is mine and my husbands favorite show every week. Please rethink the cancellation.
