Late in the 2013-14 season, NBC and ABC launched three new Sunday night dramas — all with single word titles. NBC cancelled Crisis and Believe while ABC renewed Resurrection for a second season. In retrospect, was that a good decision for the alphabet network? Should Resurrection have been cancelled as well?
On Resurrection, a small town in Missouri is turned upside down when long-dead loved ones return after 30 years. The cast includes Omar Epps, Frances Fisher, Matt Craven, Devin Kelley, Mark Hildreth, Samaire Armstrong, Sam Hazeldine, Landon Gimenez, and Kurtwood Smith.
Debuting on March 9th, Resurrection had a great launch with a 3.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 13.9 million total viewers. (Those numbers are about the same as this season’s How to Get Away with Murder’s debut.)
Unfortunately, Resurrection’s ratings dropped about 19% in week two and they kept falling nearly every week of the eight episode season. The seventh installment hit a low of a 1.9 rating with 7.85 million — half of the premiere’s demo rating.

Considering the poor luck that the alphabet network had last year launching new dramas, it wasn’t much of a surprise that ABC renewed Resurrection. They didn’t have much choice. However, the ratings slide was a terrible sign for the future.
Now, the show has been really struggling in season two. After a positive second season debut, the ratings quickly dropped, falling to new series lows week after week. The October 26th installment registered a mere 1.2 rating with 4.36 million.
ABC recently ordered full seasons and additional episodes of many of their new and older shows. It was a telling sign that the network is only producing 14 episodes of Resurrection this season.
Unless the ratings improve, it looks very likely that Resurrection will be cancelled by May. Hopefully, the writers will give viewers some degree of closure before the end.
What do you think? Did you stop watching Resurrection? Should it have been a mini-series? Is competition from The Walking Dead and football the cause of the low ratings? Do you think Resurrection should be cancelled or renewed for a third season?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ….. you have to keep this brilliant series going. I’m in the UK and have to wait longer to see this as it is. Never getting to see the complete series is just going to kill me. Why do the American Companies start brilliant series like this all the time just to let you get drawn in by the brilliant story lines then they cancel them half way through the stories. I have loads of programmes like this that i have started to watch and then been left disappointed when the american companies have decided it is… Read more »
Yes I agree,no only that they also canceled another show that I liked.
They have definitely DUMBED DOWN TV to please the masses.
Thank you Mary for putting my feelings in words
Avoid american tv. They celebrate the semi.literate. Destroy the more complex. At least you can watch good brit tv. I am Welsh born Canadian with little stomach for u.s. tv. Resurrection was an exception. Look what they did. Like assassinating a true hero
I can’t believe this show got canceled what happened one of my favs right up there with revenge, scandal, and walking dead. Please bring back the show for season 3.
Don’t cancel Ressurection. See it through plz
WHAT AN ASSNINE PLAY THEY CANCEL THIS GOOD SERIES,AND WHAT DO WE HAVE LEFT THIS STUPID KARIDAHSIN SERIES INSTEAD,WHAT A SHAME.
Please don’t cancel, I only watch a couple of shows on ABC. This one is my favorite !
No please don’t cancel. We need a 3rd season. We need Tom back to.
Its cancelled, and the writers never gave us viewers some degree of closure before the end. I guess we’ll never know why these dead people were returning? Supernatural? Government experiment? Aliens from Mars?
This is one of the very few new creative themed series in the last few years. It is one of
my favorite shows. Great story, good production values, wonderful characters and acting. My other favorite is FOREVER for the same reasons. Why do the idiotic comedies, offensive themed drama series and the unending barrage of police shows dominate the tube? The so called comedies are an insult to my intelligence and the dramas glorify immoral and perverse lifestyles. RESURRECTION and FOREVER deal with dramatic themes that actually make you think. They both have great character development and moral challenges.
Well said!
NOOOOO! don’t take it away, I love that show
Keep it….love that show..never really found out what happens….still waiting
Please bring back the show who cares about walking dead
There has to be a third season! I enjoyed this show very much and they can’t just leave things hanging like they have! Even if we just get 5 episodes to wrap up the plot, something, please.
Definitely keep it going!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am 61 years old, and Resurrection was one of the few shows that I watched and didn’t DVR
Yes!! Bring back the show! I really believed that the show being on the same night as other popular shows (Walking Dead) dropped the ratings. Putting Resurrection on another night will help a lot and also taking advantage of last episode’s storyline with the baby will continue to make this a great show!!
Absolutely agree ABC are you reading these comments come to your senses plz!
