Another member of The CW‘s Arrowverse will be flying into the sunset next year. Deadline reports that the Supergirl TV series will end with its upcoming sixth season. Despite production delays and an early 2021 premiere, season six is expected to have 20 episodes.
Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh, David Harewood, Katie McGrath, Jesse Rath, Nicole Maines, Julie Gonzolo, Azie Tesfai, Andrea Brooks, and Staz Nair. Based on the DC Comics character, the series centers on Kara Zor-El (Benoist), the cousin of Kal-El, i.e. Superman (Tyler Hoechlin). To remain safe from Krypton’s destruction, Kara grew up on Earth as a human named Kara Danvers. For years, she kept her powers a secret. Now, as an adult, she works at CatCo Worldwide Media and also for the Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO), a super-secret government organization whose mission is to keep National City – and the Earth – safe from sinister threats as costumed crusader Supergirl.
Production on the sixth (and now, final) has been delayed due to the ongoing pandemic but is expected to begin next week in Vancouver. Benoist is currently expecting so the actress will be joining the cast and crew at a later point. The production will film around her until she returns.
Between the production delays and the show’s decline in the ratings (Supergirl ranked seventh of 16 scripted CW series for the 2019-20 season), the producers, the studio, the network, and Benoist decided to wrap up the series with a full season of episodes. It seems likely that the changes in Benoist’s personal life may also have impacted the decision.
Here are some thoughts from Benoist and others regarding the series coming to a close.
As you’ve probably heard, The 6th season of @supergirlcw will officially be our last. Getting to work on this show and play this character has been nothing short of a dream come true. Although I’m sad, I’m beyond grateful to have been involved with this wonderful show. I’ve met beautiful people that I am fortunate enough to call my friends… it will all be missed. Let’s make this last season the best one yet. #Supergirl https://t.co/uzXDalBAQ4

What a ride! It’s been a pleasure bringing the Martian to life these past 6 years! Thank you to EVERYONE who supported! And thank you to all the fabulous actors, artists, writers and directors who have passed through the show over the years. Time to suit up one last time! pic.twitter.com/dIy4JjHIaF

There will continue to be adventures of natives of Krypton on The CW, however. New series Superman & Lois is expected to launch sometime in the second half of the 2020-21 season.
What do you think? Have you enjoyed the Supergirl TV series? Are you sorry to hear that it’s ending? Do you think you would have watched a seventh season?
Ditto to all the previous comments. As an older viewers who doesn’t like the directions most US shows are going I found “Supergirl” to be refreshing in its acknowledgement of social issues as well being entertaining. Sorry to see the bright young actors (great work Melissa, Kathy and Chyler) lose out for good work and great efforts from production and scripting filed away. Maybe it will be saved by someone else with a better appreciation of the viewers and not some arbitrary rating model.
While you can’t blame an actor for having a life outside a show and all, it really sucks when they are the person the show is built around and they aren’t able to just move on without them like Batwoman is trying to do and other shows have tried (not always successfully, granted…) Dunno, it’s a different kind of sad…
As in, it’s different than when a show feels like it had a natural enough ending… though even then you still are sad to see it go.
The difference between Batwoman and this is Batwoman is a newer show that they put a lot behind and they are trying to salvage it. There are many that thought part of the problem with that show besides the writing was Rose herself. Trying a different actress may actually help, though I doubt it. Supergirl has been on a long decline, the chances it will be successful while replacing one of the most poplar people in it is unlikely.
Can’t the sixth season of Legends of Tomorrow be the final season instead? Why don’t they just move back to Los Angeles and move the show back to CBS for next season?
j really loved supergirl it’s going to suck to see it go im going to miss it
I will miss it alot. It was a great show to me. I love watching it on Sundays nights on the CW.
Stopped watching it mid 2nd season.. with the poor story lines and wooden acting im surprised its lasted this long!
I want to wish the cast all the luck in the world. Maybe several supporting cast members will appear in the Superman and Lois as a regular cast member. Maybe Supergirl will become her own action film.
stopped watching it 2 seasons ago….. couldn’t take the substitution of politics in place of real story lines.
They should be cancelling that Horrid Charmed!
Brian, I am not holding my breath about the Charmed getting the axes.
I really enjoy this show, it is a lot of fun and the world needs more fun now more than ever, Thank You, so very much, you will be missed
Decline in ratings yet is still in the top 50% (7th of 16)? I think network needs to wake up to the reality of the way watching television is changing and still being top 50% of a small number isn’t enough to save a show.
Sorry to see the show go, but it survived its original CBS (NBC?) cancellation to give us five more fun seasons so we at least have that.
My understanding is that it wasn’t cancelled on CBS but transferred to CW (CBS is the parent company that owns CW) as it fits better in the Arrowverse as demonstrated by the several crossovers since. While CBS is typically watched by older audiences, CW is geared toward younger audiences.
Gutted. Why do the great shows get cancelled but shows like real housewifes etc get renewed. Not everyone enjoys so called reality tv. Disgusting.
good it is going it was a good show until it became super woke
I still shock that Supergirl 6 season will be the last. I still hope that the CW will change its mind and renewal of the series. Maybe we will get a spin-off series. How about calling Metropolis.
I agree. I believe they’re making a mistake. I wish The CW would reconsider about renewing Supergirl for one more season, two more seasons or three more seasons. And I really wish someone would make a new petition on Change.org called “Save Supergirl From Coming to an End After Six Seasons”.
Isnt the upcoming Superman a spin off from Supergirl? I dont see them changing their minds. There is nothing about the last couple seasons ratings that indicate it should be stretched further.
There’s always a chance of turning around ratings.
I don’t recall seeing anything like this. Creators took a good show and decided to dump the stories and instead make it all about social issues. They destroyed this show all by themselves.
Just like every show on CW, every other network, sports, movies, and news.
Social issues drive storylines as viewers can and often do relate to them. Not including relevant issues make the stories hollow.
Agreed. Season 1 under CBS was good, but then they got moved to SJW-CW and the show went full retarded. No DC-related storylines, just their woke propaganda from there on.
