The work of Amalia and Penance is over. Deadline reports that both Westworld and The Nevers are leaving the HBO Max streaming service. Westworld was cancelled earlier this year after four seasons on HBO. The Nevers, which has been M.I.A. since 2021, has now also been cancelled.
An HBO sci-fi drama series created by Joss Whedon, The Nevers TV show stars Laura Donnelly, Ann Skelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Pip Torrens, Ben Chaplin, Denis O’Hare, Amy Manson, Rochelle Neil, Zackary Momoh, Eleanor Tomlinson, Elizabeth Berrington, Anna Devlin, Kiran Sonia Sawar, Viola Prettejohn, Ella Smith, Vinnie Heaven, and Nick Frost. In the year 1896, Victorian London is rocked by a supernatural event that gives certain people (mostly women) abnormal abilities — from the wondrous to the disturbing. But, no matter their particular “turns,” all who belong to this new underclass are in grave danger. It falls to mysterious, quick-fisted widow Amalia True (Donnelly) and brilliant young inventor Penance Adair (Skelly) to protect and shelter these gifted “orphans.” To do so, they have to face the brutal forces determined to annihilate their kind.
The show was given a straight-to-series order in 2018, and filming began in 2019. Filming of half of the season was completed before production had to be shut down in early 2020 due to the pandemic. Filming resumed and was completed in the fall of that year.
It was announced in February 2021 that the season would be split into two parts, with the first six episodes of The Nevers airing in April and May. They averaged a 0.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 532,000 viewers. Word was that the remaining six episodes would be released sometime this year, but that never happened.
We now know that The Nevers isn’t returning to HBO after all. The series is being pulled off of HBO Max, and the complete 12-episode season is expected to end up on some other Warner Bros. Discovery platform. It’s unclear what that will be, but we’ll report that information when it’s announced.
On the plus side, word is that the remaining six episodes of The Nevers were crafted in such a way that they will wrap up the show’s story.
What do you think? Have you enjoyed The Nevers TV show on HBO? Are you sorry to hear that the show’s being pulled off HBO Max and that there won’t be a second season?
The only reason I have HBO/MAX was The Never. I’m canceling my subscription immediately! Not joking!!!
So disappointed HBO cancelled The Nevers; hopefully Netflix or another streaming outlet will pickup this series.
Honestly, The Nevers, is the only show I’ve looked forward to in some time. The writing is brilliant and that became clear to me on a second watch. There’s so much average to slightly-above-average TV out there and The Nevers stood above it all. I’ve cancelled my subscription to HBO Max now that I know. There’s nothing on their roster that I care to see anymore.
Yet another perplexing decision by Warner. The episodes are finished. Post production ended months ago. The episodes are 100% done. Why wouldn’t you air them, and just take in whatever revenue they’d generate. Furthermore, what is with pulling already released episodes that THEY OWN off their service? WBD is making some seriously idiotic decisions. None of this makes any sense.
I don’t understand it either. FYI, I found out tonight you can purchase the eps on Amazon Prime 🙂
I LOVED The Nevers. Saw it twice and listened to The Nevers podcast. When I heard HBO was canceling it I started watching it again right away. Finished up with my third viewing of Episode 6 about 15 minutes before it got pulled at midnight. I sure wish somebody would pick it up for a second season the way Jeff Bezos was a fan of The Expanse and picked that up for Amazon.
The Nevers was a great show so disappointed to see it cancelled. Sooo disappointed
I liked it, but maybe it was a show women prefered? Anyway,I hope it shows up on Netflix.
‘The Nevers’ was a clever, funny, interesting, and beautifully made and written story about strong women (god forbid). What short-sighted TV exec wonk made this terrible decision? I hate that all these shows are being pulled from HBOMax. Certainly doesn’t make me want to pay extra $$ to subscribe to any Warner Bros.-Discovery-Let’s Dumbdown Everything-Monetize Everything service.
So sorry to see this news!! The Nevers is a wonderful show and I’ve been waiting for Part 2. It is a shame this show was deliberately given undeserved negative reviews from every “professional” reviewer simply because it was a Joss Whedon show and he has fallen from Hollywood grace. But, generally, the public audience found it interesting and even intriguing. The actors and everyone involved did a great job, the story was great and appropriately twisty. They all certainly deserved more of a chance. I will watch Part 2 wherever it does show up. I can’t say the same… Read more »
The Zazlav/Malone regime of Ayn Rand extremist cult insanity continues their reign of terror. Eventually they’ll turn HBO into another idiotic “reality” channel and completely destroy it, just like they did CW.
Seems to be their business model.. More dumbing down “reality” TV and turning CNN into a clone of FAUX. Zero commitment to any TV programming that actually involves thought or creativity.
I enjoyed it alot and was looking forward to the conclusion wonder where it will land so we can watch it.
I can’t believe this show is cancelled!!! It’s such a great series. My husband and I both enjoyed the first installment. With a very heavy heart, look forward to watching the remaining episodes
The Nevers was a great show that offered something different. So disappointing of HBO. I hoping an accessible streamer picks it up.
I think as usual hbo drops good series way too early and that is why they lose money. The Nevers is a great show and I hope someone out there is smart enough to take it over and continue the series. I will probably drop hbo because they always drop series I like to watch. They keep the crappy ones about girls doing drugs and getting beat up. I think I’m all done with HBO and their bad decisions.
I really enjoyed this show and was looking forward to its resumption. I’m VERY unhappy about this!
My husband & I totally agree. It is so hard to find a good female centric show & this was done so well.
