It’s hard to believe but, after four seasons and 84 episodes, the ABC comedy, Ugly Betty, has come to an end.
Ugly Betty revolves around Betty Suarez (America Ferrera), a sweet girl who tries to navigate through the catty world of high fashion and Mode magazine. Others in the cast include Eric Mabius, Tony Plana, Ana Ortiz, Becki Newton, Mark Indelicato, Michael Urie, Vanessa Williams, and Ashley Jensen.
The series was a moderate success for its first two seasons but then dropped in season three. It would have been on the bubble but ABC ended up giving it an early renewal, likely because they wanted to produce enough episodes for a syndication package.
This season, ABC put it on Friday nights, hoping that the devout fans would still watch. Not many did and ABC eventually moved it to Wednesday nights after Eastwick failed to catch on.
When Betty was sold into syndication, the ABC network and production company were likely disappointed that each episode only brought a “low six figures” when purchased by the TV Guide channel. If Ugly Betty’s fate wasn’t sealed before, that likely did it. In January, ABC announced that they were canceling Ugly Betty after four seasons.
On the positive side, this gave the cast and crew time to tie up the show’s loose ends and to give it a proper finale. Tonight, ABC aired the last episode and it wrapped up this way…
Betty has accepted a new job in London. After it looks like Daniel isn’t coming to Betty’s going away party, he finally shows up but can’t go in to see her. Surprisingly, he later steps down from his job at Mode, making Wilhelmina the sole editor. He says that he wants to start over and that means following Betty to London. He meets her there, on the street and says that he’d like to take her out on a date.
As Betty heads back to work, she notes that she’s going to need a new assistant and he jokes that he might submit his resume. As the music plays, we see happy Betty disappear into the crowd. The title “Ugly Betty” appears on screen and then the “Ugly” disappears.
What did you think of the last episode? Are you happy with Betty’s choices? Is there anything that you would have done differently?

I also think there will be an Ugly Betty movie that explores Betty’s new life in London: balancing relationships with new and old friends, family overseas, succeeding in her dream career, and a more in-depth treatment of a new relationship with Daniel. While I agree that the series finale should have been two hours, they managed to wrap up most of the major plot-lines in one hour. I suspect that they left it rather open-ended to segue into a movie… look at how Sex & the City ended. They’re on the second film sequel already because of how successful the… Read more »
This was one of the best shows ever to appear on television. There is no reason it shouldn’t have been able to carry on for another 3 or 4 seasons other than the fact that the network botched it big-time.
I think they could have at least made it a little longer… like I never saw Bobby & Justin looking for apartments… and the end was great. It could have been better, but mostly I am just upset that it is over!!!
I’m pretty sure some of the cast members are in talks about a movie, so maybe we’ll get that big kiss after all!!!
Where was the kiss!!!!! I wanted a big passionate kiss…I got…can I take you to dinner?
it was a crappy last episode! ha
hopefully there will be a movie bout her life in London and her relationship with Daniel. Luv u Betty!!!
This was one of the best shows on television. Girls and women all over the world are thankful for the stylish and classy treatment of subject matter which could so easily have been boring and didactic. This show brought forward the topic of female beauty and the theme of a young woman building a career in a complex and unwelcoming world. Fabulous, colourful visuals, camp humour, and excellent scripts provided great entertainment we could count on. I am sorry to see Betty go, we have become attached and she will be much missed. The ending was perfectly done, no fan… Read more »
I’m so heartbroken that its off permanetly. It was my favorite show and I can’t believe I’ll never see it each week again/bring it back or a spinoff of it!!!!!!!
I know the ending implied that Betty & Daniel were finally going to be together, but I really wish we got to see them finally kiss after all this time. Sometimes just implying something isn’t enough…
I feel that after four seasons and trilions of devoted fans we were robed a well suited final episode of Ugly Betty. Yes it was an ok ending but it did not satisy what I would have pictured the charectors doing in the final episode. I felt that the writters and the network are both to blame in this case. Yes Amanda found her father, Hilda moved out and got married, We finally learn ir Justin is or isnt, Wilhelmina gets what she originaly wanted in the first place, Mark kinda finds love and moves up in the company, and… Read more »
I think that it was wrapped up to fast in the last episode I think it should of had a porper ending like a two hour show and said goodbye better now we will never know how everyone turns out I really liked the show and really got into it the last 2 years I am dissapointed.
iI wouldn’t change a thing! She stuck to her guns and she was happy in the end. She gets her dream job and the guy in the end. I loved it! Simply Betty!
I never missed 1 episode and I am very sad to see Betty go, however I loved the final show, although I wish that it was 2 hours instead of crammed all into 1 hour.
I have watched every episode, and I was so upset to find out that the show was being cancelled. I waited for this episode since finding out that the show was being cancelled, hoping that they would give me a perfect ending, instead they add Daniel’s feelings in at the last minute, get me all excited and than bam they give me nothing, but a future dinner I don’t get to see. That was a crappy ending to such a great show….
