Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.
Please please do a season 2
Loved it!!!!
I was hoping for a season two….boo!!
What is wrong with the Fox execs? They cancel a top rated show, leave viewers hanging, and disregard the sentiment of the viewing public. I was using this series in my classes to discuss issued involving ethics, conflict, power, leadership, and trust. It is smart, clever, well written, well acted and entertaining. It is the only show on Fox worth watching. I can not believe you would even consider not going forward with Season 2. Fox suffers from the same egomania and poor judgment as David Pilcher. And you know what happened to him. Shame on you Fox TV execs.… Read more »
Come on you can’t leave us hanging like this please add season 2!! There are not many things to watch that grab your attention on tv these days for people who don’t care for reality tv. I love the characters and stars that play in this show. I have been waiting for another show now I am seeing it may never air?
and the way it ended is kind of crummy it left us all hanging. please add season 2!!
I am dying inside because wayward pines was cancelled ;( The only good show on FOX and its cancelled? What is this? FOX im disowning you
My husband and I loved this show. I’m so disappointed.
Can’t believe there isn’t going to be a second series! It was one of my favourite shows – only other ones I have the staying power to watch are GOT and True Detective
My husband and I would definitely watch 2nd season of this show…we can’t believe it has been cancelled
Definitely want a second series…actually, as more seasons as possible !
“Wayward Pines” is one of the best series I have ever watched and it would be such a shame not to be continued. Hope it comes back!! Thank you!
Wayward Pines is one of the very best tv series I’ve seen in a long time. I can usually figure out the plot to most shows but I was completely surprised and hooked after the 1st episode. I loved it. Would definitely watch another season!!! Please bring it back!!
Do more Wayward Pines. With all he crap on TV this standsout.
OMG! I cant believe its over. I’ve been searching all over the web trying to find more information. That last episode did not lead me to believe that would be it for Wayward Pines….
I literally was sitting in front of the TV the follow Thursday, so confused. Please do another season. What else will I do on Thursday nights???…. ugh
My family and I rarely have any interest in shows on FOX. There’s only one show we’ve watched consistently…..until wayward pines, that is. This show simply had everything we look for in tv. I know nothing I alone can say will change anything. We as a family just feel, though, that more can be done with another season to bring wayward pines to a thriving and growing society rather than leaving it doomed to repeat what’s already been proven to fail. And we were looking forward to seeing that. Very disappointing.
That promo at no point states that it is the last of the show. It says “SEASON” finale; as in, last episode on the season. It does not state final episode. There may very well be a second season.
At 00:04, the promo says “the epic series finale”
I didn’t even realize that the season has ended let alone the whole series. Please please please bring us another season!!! I would love to see more character developments and find out why the first generation has prevailed.
