What’s This TV Show About?
Airing on the TNT cable channel, The Alienist stars Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, Dakota Fanning, Brian Geraghty, Douglas Smith, Matthew Shear, Matt Lintz, Robert Ray Wisdom, and Q’orianka Kilcher. Set in 1896 in New York City, the mystery drama centers on Laszlo Kreizler (Brühl), an alienist, i.e. a criminal psychologist. When a ritualistic serial killer starts targeting boy prostitutes, Police Commissioner Teddy Roosevelt (Geraghty) drafts Kreizler to head up his secret investigation into the murders.
Season One Ratings
The first season of The Alienist averaged a 0.41 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.77 million viewers. Learn how The Alienist stacks up against other TNT TV shows.
The Alienist ended after one season but TNT later ordered a sequel series called The Angel of Darkness. The channel has since decided that Angel of Darkness is now the second season of The Alienist and it debuts July 19, 2020. Stay tuned for further updates.
Telly’s Take
Although it premiered with very good numbers for a cable drama, the ratings have been dropping pretty quickly. Will TNT cancel or renew The Alienist for season two? 6/13/18 update: Cast members have confirmed that the series ended with one season, though they’d be open for a second season. Details here.
8/16/18 update: TNT has ordered a sequel series called The Angel of Darkness. Details here.
5/21/20 update: TNT has changed the title of the sequel series to The Alienist: The Angel of Darkness and is treating it like a second season.

This was a tremendous tv show, and it’s cancelled?? I can’t believe such an ensemble of actors, and a wonderful story, and it’s not renewed!!

Great show!!! Please do not cancel the Alienist. Why are the good shows being cancelled and the awful shows seem to hang around? This is one of the Best shows that I have seen in quite sometime.
Truer words have never been spoken! The Alienist was the edge of your seat thriller that was captivating and sadly demented! I LOVED IT! Please bring back the fantastic cast and another story line! Why is it the good shows do not continue? But we are forced to deal with crap like the horrible garbage reality tv that is thrown at us no matter where we look?? That is why I listen to music and watch the classic thrillers, like the Alienist!
