The truth is coming out at TCA winter press tour. EP Hart Hanson confirmed FOX cancelled Bones. It was not the creative team’s decision to end the long-running procedural series. Although star Emily Deschanel echoed his sentiment, it seems David Boreanaz remained mum on the cancellation.
Variety reports Hanson said, “It wasn’t our decision. We were told it was our last year. It wasn’t that we called that network and said, ‘We’d like to finish now’. I’m not sure anyone is terribly upset or terribly shocked that it’s our last year.” Bones first premiered on FOX September 13, 2005.
About the Bones TV Show Cancellation
According to the report, Deschanel said, “It wasn’t our decision.” She also added, “We had a really good run!” Finally, Deschanel teased that Bones’ 12th and final season ends in a “very satisfying way.”
Deadline reports on the issue a bit more in depth, and with more of a bite. Check it out.
Creator Hart Hanson said he fought with Fox for the entire life of the series. “We were on the bubble all the time,” he said. “We were angry all the time, calling the network asking for more promos. I was furious with the [move to] Friday announcement; I felt it was just telling” TV critics the show was toast. “I had huge fights with [longtime scheduling chief] Preston Beckman, who is not someone you want to fight with. He is tough!” Hanson remembered with a shudder. (Beckman was part of the old Fox regime, which moved Bones around the schedule, including to Fridays in Season 9.)
“Our fans were loud and passionate and very opinionated, and they would follow us,” he said, crediting viewers with keeping the show on the air so long despite the best effort of network execs. The show outlasted four network chiefs and 20 timeslots, Hanson boasted, acknowledging that at some point he struck a “go ahead and try to kill us” attitude.
“The cockroaches of Fox,” he said, lovingly.
What do you think? How do you feel about FOX cancelling the Bones TV show? Should the network have renewed it for season 13?
I watched this show when it was on regularly, but due to work, I was unable to keep up. I found it now and watch every time it is on. This was one of the very best shows on TV. Jag was also very good, but the Bones producer was very intelligent as he did not keep Booth & Bones apart and showed their marriage and Kids. Most shows were very well done
The problem with TV execs is that they often let their ego get in the way of logical and sound decision making.
Hugh mistake cancelling Bones! Very entertaining. Our whole family gather to watch. Going to be a sad day at our home…..
Bones was AWESONE I literally just got finished watching the entire series again with my husband. We are so mad that we will no longer be able to watch bones it most definitely had more seasons to come and I believe y’all made a huge mistake cancelling the show.
I think the show had a lot left in it and Fox made a huge mistake. I certainly do not watch anything on that network nor will I again.
BUNCH OF ******** AT FOX !!
Tragic…
Huge mistake not keeping it running!
I would like to see bones renewed
Absolutely gutted loved this and was really looking forward to next series Damn shame
Bones was awesome. They made a huge mistake getting rid of the show! They couldve made more money keeping it going.
I think it just prove Fox is no place to start a series. They screwed up Firefly out of the chute and with Bones shows they can’t recognize a successful series while it is running. This is one messed up network!
I always watched every episode and am now binge watching and taping them all again. It is so discouraging that Fox has such poor decision making executives as to cancel one of their best programs ever. Bones had everything to capture all types of audience and the market. Fox has gone downhill in their programming. No wonder people turn to PBS for quality programs.
Fox most likely does not mean to have poor judgement with Bones, as most of those people have no idea what a normal sane life is. They do the same things in the News dept with some of those inept and loud reporters.
