Will ABC cancel or renew Castle for a ninth season? Per Deadline, the network must decide on the fate of the crime drama series, today. According to TV Line, Castle star Nathan Fillion has already signed on. As previously reported, executive producer Alexi Hawley has prepared two endings for the Castle‘s season eight finale. The decision of which ending to use is behind the deadline.
Hawley will use an ending with a big cliffhanger, if ABC renews Castle for a ninth season. The alternate ending is a TV series finale, which will hopefully provide Castle fans with some measure of closure, if the long-running series is cancelled. Either way, the eighth season finale will be star Stana Katic’s last outing as Kate Beckett.
In mid-April, ABC chose not to renew the contract of both Katic and Tamala Jones (Lanie Parish), reportedly for budgetary reasons. Both Deadline and TV Line are reporting that if ABC renews Castle for a ninth and final season, it will likely be an abbreviated one. The situation is similar to the FOX pickup of Bones‘ 12th and final season, although in that case, both leads are returning.
5/6 update: Word is that ABC has prolonged the renewal decision. We’ll post as soon as we hear more.

They can easily explain a Beckett absence for that bit of time.
Stana Katic is the best character on the show. killing her off is a huge mistake. Instead they shoukd just end this show. Im pretty sure many people are going to stop watching this show if beckett dies. Although castle is the titular character without beckett hes not gonna be that good. so bottomline is beckett is too amazing and is shes not there the show bites the dust
They don’t have to and shouldn’t kill Beckett off to explain such a short absence. 13 episodes could be 1 or 2 weeks or 1 or 2 months.
I think they should end this once wonderful show with a happy ending. Some people say give “Castle PI” a chance. Haven’t we already done that? I have never liked the PI aspect of the show. Beautiful intelligent Alexis is wasted as a PI. The Hayley character has no charisma or chemistry with Castle and those episodes have been awful so I, for one, will not watch “Castle PI”. It was more disappointing because Castle and Beckett weren’t together. That’s why the episodes sucked so much. They were sad. It’s a lot different than just explaining Beckett’s short absence in a happy way and focusing on finishing Esposito, Martha, and Alexis’ stories.
Without Stana, you might as well cancel Castle because Castle was always about Kate & Castle. It’s ludricous to continue without Stana. If it is cancelled, then it should at least finish with them having a child, or at least Kate becoming ptegnant. The idea of Castle becoming involved with anybody else is really ridiculous!
That’s how they can write Beckett off for those few episodes…pregnancy and bed rest.
Please renew the show. Castle keeps it going, not Beckett.

ABC should air both endings – the series finale for those who want to end the current Castle and be done with it; and for those who are interested in a “new” Castle, they can watch the cliffhanger and continue to watch next season.
…or just wait and watch the season 9 series finale.
The show will die from a broken heart without Kate Beckett. If Castle can survive it, he will be searching for Kate’s killer in season nine. Castle will then become the new James Bond of crime books. Traveling to new and exotic places providing cautionary and insightful conspiracy theories to the FBI super hot special agent with Ryan and Esposito conducting recon and expertise to catch serial killers. The new season will be a whirlwind. Can’t wait to see what happens next. Can you?

Esposito, Martha, and Alexis still have unfinished stories. Hayley can get a love interest or we don’t know anything about the Spanish IT girl.

I agree with those who are saying “end it.” It’s time. And, I’m afraid that they’re going to kill off Beckett if they renew it. I’d rather it just end on a high note and be a pleasant cap to a pleasant series.
There are other ways to explain Beckett’s absence. If they’re going to be stupid and kill her, then they should end it.
I think whom ever let Katic get away needs his or her head exaimed. It is by far my favorite show and the chemistry is super never going to watch again and i stay up late for the reruns. You really need to rethink this deciscion
It can’t be avoided…Stana probably wants more money.
Time to let it end gracefully. The series is about a writer and his muse. Without the muse, there is no premise and no reason to continue the series. I won’t watch a season 9.

If it’s going to be a short season, why fire Stana? Makes no sense.
She probably wanted too much money and she already wanted her freedom to do other stuff last year.
Not interested in a 9th season of Castle. End this 8th season with dignity.
