Good news! Damages has been saved from cancellation and there will be a fourth and fifth seasons. Unfortunately, not all of the show’s fans will be able to see the new episodes.
Damages revolves around Patty Hewes (Glenn Close), a tough New York attorney. She takes on tough cases and will do just about anything to make sure her clients come out on top. Prominent castmembers have included Rose Byrne, Tate Donovan, Ted Danson, Zeljko Ivanek, Noah Bean, Anastasia Griffith, and Philip Bosco.
The FX series has been declining in the ratings for some time and the third season finale only drew 925,000 viewers. The cable channel said that they couldn’t afford to keep broadcasting the show based on those numbers. They also said they’d be open to some sort of partnership deal if Sony could find another buyer (ala the shared airings of Friday Night Lights between NBC and DirecTV).
DirecTV has come to the show’s rescue but is financing new episodes for exclusive airings, in a similar vein to the deal they made for Passions a couple years back. This means that viewers who don’t have DirecTV won’t be able to see the episodes.

“FX was very proud to have developed one of the best scripted series on television, but, in order to have a future, the show needed DirecTV and we are thrilled they stepped in,” said John Landgraf, President & General Manager, FX Networks. “Sony Pictures Television is a great production partner and we at FX Productions are excited for these next two seasons.”
Under the exclusive deal, DirecTV has ordered 20 new episodes of Damages that will play out over the course of two seasons. They’ll air on DirecTV’s exclusive 101 channel in 2011 and 2012. The satellite provider has also acquired the rights to rerun the first three seasons of Damages.
For those without DirecTV, the episodes will surely be released on DVD at some point.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear that Damages has been saved? If you don’t already subscribe, would this news make you consider ordering DirecTV?

Damages is one of the best shows on TV. We don’t have Direct TV so watching it isn’t possible. We were so looking forward to the new season. I guess viewers are too busy watching reality crap to take the time for quality TV. Shame on FX for not supporting this exceptional program.
BTW, I dont have cable or Direct TV BUT, I would pay Direct TV or another online outlet a nominal fee to view this show, even a week after airing.
Come on Producers, make this happen for more $$$$$.
I believe this show would have a better following on FREETV. Those that see this show LOVE IT. The problem is PROMOTION. I too was hooked and purchased on AMAZON when it was available. I will not get Direct TV to see it and will prob pay someone with DTV to recored it for me or wait for the DVD. I really dont want to miss it. The writers are great and it’s a shame the producers aren’t shoping this great program better.
See you on DVD Patty! xxoxox
That’s b*llsh**!!!
I LOVE DAMAGES 7 am gonna miss the next couple seasons!! :o(
They shouldve either SHARED the episodes
(1st run on direct tv & rerun A WEEK LATER on FX)
OR just CANCELLED the damn show!!
This is not fair AT ALL!!!
They could at least offer episodes (free) via their website (1 week AFTER the initial airing)!!!
Other than watching the news (which is becoming more like a pathetic comedy instead of a venue for valid information), I rarely turn on my television. However, “Damages” is one of the few programs worth watching. I’m not surprised to hear that “Damages” ratings were down, since a healthy frontal lobe is madatory for viewing, not so much for the majority of television.
Just started watching the show a few months ago and absolutely loved it. One of the very best on TV – please keep it running.
This may be politically correct for the rich. But not for the devoted fans who may not be able to view this long awaited series. Bye bye ratings.
We got apple tv for xmas and started watching damages on netflix. WE LOVE IT!! We were hooked on Dexter but caught up, now we LOVE damages. I can’t wait until season 3 is on Netflix.
Man I loooove Damages! Was just searching trying to figure out when it was going to premiere in FX…now I know why I havent seen any ads. Speaking of which, how abt making the additional investment in marketing and advertising when you’ve already invested to make it such a great show!! Not fair that it wasnt marketed properly (hence all the ppl saying they love it and are seeing it for the first time in directv) and yet it is being cancelled for not having a big enough audience. What to do, what to do…
In two words…it sucks! FX could have gone pretty much anywhere but chose one of, if not the worst provider in the business. Like most we will wait until it shows up on another medium.
We too have been marathoning the Seasons on Netflix. We hadnt heard of it before but are throughouly enjoying the first three seasons on Netflix!
My wife and I love the show but I can’t see changing my cable provider just to get one show. We will wait for season’s 4 and 5 to hit NetFlix. The better solution would have been AMAZON pay-per-view.
So sad to hear that diect tv has the rights to the show damages!! My fav show, and have seen it since the beginning!! Have been waiting for season four and now as a fan I can’t even see it!!!! Do not have direct tv!! Don’t want direct tv!!! I think FX should thought of the fans they had already before making the deal!!! So upset!! Thanks alot for not keeping a fan after making one!!!!
“Damages” is awsome! We had a Season 1 & 2 marathon party over a recent rainy weekend (via Netflix). Our neighbors had never heard of the show either, but had to watch every last episode before they would go home…
Why is it that really good shows like “Damages” go by the wayside while crappy shows seem to go on forever…
I had never heard of this show until it starting airing on Directv. I couldn’t understand why the episodes were dated 2007 if it was a new show until I read this article. Now it makes sense. I have been recording it on the dvr, and it has been one terrific show! I can’t believe it was on before and I never knew about it. I don’t know if it just wasn’t advertised in the right places or why I hadn’t heard of it, but I am really happy Directv picked it up and run so many ads about it!… Read more »
