Well, Pan Am is gone (and likely cancelled) so ABC is trying another series at 10pm, GCB. It’s the newest TV show that’s co-produced by Darren Star, the man best known for creating Melrose Place, Sex and the City, and Beverly Hills, 90210. Will this show find success like those or not last as long as Pan Am did?
GCB follows a former high-school “Queen Bitch” (Leslie Bibb) named Amanda Vaughn. She’s become a widow with two children and she returns to Plano, Texas. Once back in her old hometown, Amanda comes face to face with the former schoolmates that she used to mock. Other castmembers include Jennifer Aspen, Marisol Nichols, Miriam Shor, David James Elliott, Mark Deklin, Brad Beyer, Annie Potts, and Kristin Chenoweth.
Is GCB worth watching? Well, here’s what some of the critics think:
Boston Herald: “The comedy is broad, though some Christians will be offended that so many here are depicted as hypocrites. But the March 11 episode, ‘Hell Hath No Fury,’ squanders the show’s promise with a story about high school bullying, the generation gap and how daughters repeat their mother’s mistakes or not. Oh, there’s hugging. And life lessons learned. Ugh. Please, not on a Sunday night. Makes me want to watch a marathon of Starz’ bloody Spartacus: Vengeance On Demand to wash the treacle out of my eyes. If GCB wants to soar to heavenly numbers, it better let the devil out to play.”
LA Times: “ABC has been touting its new comedy GCB as a cross between Steel Magnolias and Desperate Housewives. While it does have Steel Magnolia screenwriter Robert Harling as its creator, we regret to inform you that GCB owes more to the Real Housewives than it does the desperate ones.”
SF Chronicle: “The trouble is that GCB may be someone’s idea of Christian but it’s not really good – just so-so – and one reason it’s not good is that it’s not really very bitchy – just annoying… GCB will follow Desperate Housewives for now, which potentially gives it a nice ratings boost as it tries to get off the ground. On the other hand, the show’s scheduling proximity will draw inevitable comparisons to Housewives and, truth to tell, Wisteria Lane beats bougainvillea every time.”
Boston Globe: “The pilot is well sketched out, but low on laughs… If there is a way to deepen these character sketches, add some warmth, and perfect the balance of comic inanity, humanity, and Christianity, then there’s some hope for GCB. Right now these women just seem mean. And while that may hew to ‘reality’ for churchgoers who recognize these types from a few pews back, it’s not much fun – good, Christian or otherwise.”
NY Daily News: “ABC has invoked both those things in hyping GCB. Now it must slide them both aside. The Christian ‘issue’ should fade, soon, since nothing in the show mocks religion — just religious people with feet of clay. Ironically, the characters here spend more time in church than characters on any dozen other prime-time shows combined.”
Salt Lake Tribune: “Recently, Entertainment Tonight referred to ABC’s GCB as a show that ‘makes fun of religion.’ But that’s not true. The soap/comedy/drama makes fun of people who don’t live their faith. And there’s a big difference… GCB is hilarious and over-the-top, while at the same time reflecting the real world of the rich and often self-righteous. And those people go to church.”
What do you think? Do you think GCB is worth watching? If you’ve watched the first episode, will you be back for more?

great show! people crying disrespectful, its TV thats the beauty turn it off if it disrespects you. TV disrespects so many parts of life, and so much selection on tv means u can watch what suits your standards. In Canada I was raised very strict Catholic and people get insanely judgmental in the house of the lord. its like the love of christ, who was decent and humble and open, made them mean. it happens everywhere the all seeing eye gathers us folk to sit and judge and not look inward, change or evolve. its much easier to observe someone… Read more »
it was great!! but the lead Amanda is going to have to slip back into her old ways for it to really get bitchy!! I hope it gets so good i forget she was married to ricky bobby and then the magicman…now u see me…
I watched this show and loved it! I guess you have to be from Texas to get it and after living in Dallas this show is a bit too true. This show is not disrespecting Christianity, just the ones who behave like that are. And there are plenty of those in Dallas. Looks like it is centered more around the Highland Park area. And if someone is offended by the behavior, it might be because the shoes of some of the characters fit. I would love to see this and Pan Am on Sundays!
GCB sucks!!!! It is basically disrespectful, bring back Pan Am please!!!! Great show!!!
I thought the show was great! I will be a fan and plan on watching each Sunday night. The show was cast perfect. Good job ABC.
You have to be kidding me ! The show is mocking Christians. Why didn’t they pick the Muslim religion, or Buddhist religion ? Because they would be afraid of a lawsuit. I didn’t watch it, and I don’t have to watch it to tell what the show is trying to do. I really think this great country that was founded on principles of God (if you don’t believe me, go to the library and start reading your history) by our forefather’s. I don’t watch TV much anymore, except for some NFL and Public Broadcast Stations. As long as the morals… Read more »
not just yes, but hell to the YES!!! that show was GREAT!!! for the record, pan am got two episodes from me, thought it SUCKED; and you people finding it offensive, come on–it’s a SPOOF! they aren’t “taking on” religion…kristin chenoweth wouldn’t participate in something designed to disrespect or slur christianity, or any religion. as for disrespecting your community, have you ever seen an episode of dallas? criminy!
I had to record the pilot episode as it interferes with other programming Ive watched for years. Last night I watched, with much disappointment. First of all…I live in Plano…and this show is not shot here nor do “they” live here. Thank goodness. It is of my opinion this show is disrepectful to Christianity and portras a poor inaccurate image of Texas women. Sorry ABC…I’ll be sticking with CBS on Sundays, and not waste my valuable DVR space.
my husband and i saw the premier, we will be watching it again
Well, I must say that I was a fan of Pan-Am. It was very good in the beginning episodes, then it ran all over the place. I would like for the writing team to tweak the storylines and come back for another season. GCB, I wanted to see what the hype was about. It was ok, I guess. I try not to give oversight on a show until I watch about three episodes or so.
I’m a huge fan of Pan Am and sad to see GCB in it’s time slot. I’m really not impressed with the premise of GBC, but it is what it is. Pan Am is so unique, great cast, and I just hope that we see what 1964 brings! ABC…whatever needs to be tweaked with Pam Am do it, just please bring it back on Sunday nights.
I liked it, it was kind of mindless (but so are most shows these a days…) and it was extreme to the point where you wouldn’t actually expect people to behave that way but it was amusing and it made me laugh; exactly what I’m looking for when I just want to chill and watch something silly. I’ll watch again :]
I too am disappointed Pan Am seems to be dead or on its last leg. It was a smartly written entertaining show. I did watch and enjoy GCB last night. I mean Annie Potts & Kristin Chenoweth, it’s hard to go wrong. But I have seen many a show start off great and fall apart fast, but for now I will totally watch GCB again.
I liked Pan Am and am disappointed if they cancelled it. I watched GCB last night and found it quite funny and entertaining and will watch it again. It would be nice if they would just get Desperate Housewives done and over with and put GCB or Pan Am in it’s place. Bring back Pan Am, please!!
I agree with you. Pan Am, while seemed to be a bit far fetched with some of it’s storylines, is as good or better show to watch as of the other shows that stay on forever. GCB has a certain humor that a lot of people just don’t get. It is not a slap to Christianity. We as a people need to stop being so foolishly sensitive.
I thought the show was funny and entertaining. Anyone could tell from the teasers what the show was going to be about. This also doesn’t seem to be replacing Pan Am but it looks like it will replace Desperate Housewives if it comes back next season.
