Why did CBS just cancel most of their new TV shows? Recently, network boss Kelly Kahl spoke with Deadline about the decision to cancel Broke, Carol’s Second Act, Tommy, and God Friended Me.
With the exception of God Friended Me, which wrapped its second season this spring, all the shows cancelled debuted during the 2019-20 season. CBS also cancelled Man with a Plan, which is currently airing its fourth season.
Speaking to Deadline, Kahl revealed it was a “tough” decision to cancel Broke, God Friended Me, Carol’s Second Act, and Tommy:
At the end of the day they weren’t doing the numbers we were hoping for, and despite liking them creatively, knowing timely decisions were upon us, we had to make tough calls to move on from those shows. You want to keep them all for another season; that’s what makes these calls tough. You invest a lot of time and effort and people put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into these shows, and when you have to say goodbye. It’s a tough call.”

man with a plan, and carols second act were the only 2 shows worth watching ,from these canceled shows, tommy was boring, broke was NOT funny, miscast, tired concept, god was a lame rip-off, of a MUCH better shows, kevin probably save the world and joan of arcadia, i hope they shop man with a plan around to other networks, its funny and worth saving the most.
I LOVED THESE SHOWS!!!!! THEY WERE CLEAN AND FAMILY FRIENDLY! I WISH THEY WOULD GET RAID OF THE TRASH REALITY SHOWS! I ALWAYS CHANGE CHANNEL WHEN THEY COME ON!!!!!
God Friended Me was my favorite show. It was a nice wholesome following to 60 Minutes. I loved guessing who was behind the God account. I can’t believe this family show was not well received. With the ending of the series not revealing who was behind the God account, I hope that means it could be picked up by another network.
“God Friended Me” rapidly became my family’s favorite program and we watched it “religiously”. I find most of network T.V. generally not worth watching. I loved the characters and the wholesome theme. It seems that anything not containing violence and lots of sex never last long. I hope that you rethink this unhappy decision.
Both Tommy and God Friended Me are/were valuable shows. They risked standing out when the other shows just regurgitate the same story and plot lines.
Take a risk CBS and offer people something unique. Keep both these shows in production
God friend I love it I would watch every nite if I could
I really like Tommy and God friended me. I think Tommy was new and exciting and God Friended my was just different than anything else on television. Man with a plan is also one of my favorites.
I watched Tommy and God Friended Me. Those two shows are different and great. Please reconsider. God Friended Me needs to be tried in a different time slot. Try Wednesday. I think Tommy would be awesome as a lead in to Blue Bloods which is another one of my favorite shows. You invested a lot in these shows, try a different time slot before you give up. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Tommy is an interesting, complex show. Give it another season to catch on! It’s good.
BOYCOTT CBS. Tommy was a must watch for me and I am a senior lady. Edie Falco was great and the time slot you put it in for its first season was STUPID. I gave up SVU for Tommy and never looked back. If your damn ratings are so important why didn’t you put Tommy on before Blue Bloods where it had a fair chance. You SUCK, CBS and I will never watch your station again.
I can’t believe you are cancelling Tommy!!! WHY! Edie plays the role so well!. Is it because people could not get their minds around a female chief. I agree that Tommy represented more of a fighter for justice for all. Very refreshing and hope you reconsider
Why Tommy and why God friended me love both shows
I watch (and watched) Tommy. The character Tommy was working very hard to balance the needs of the people being protected by the police not to feel they needed to be protected from police, and also protect the police. I also think the character in the future would have been working against corruption in all forms. She was working for a system of justice instead of just a legal system.
Tommy is a very good show with fresh ideas great acting human drama. Really looked forward to each new show and can’t believe it is canceled.
