Check out these photos from the Grandfathered TV show’s first season finale, airing May 10th on FOX. Could it also be the series finale? Depending on how you slice the numbers, the freshman comedy series sits in the middle of the FOX pack or lower. Is Grandfathered likely to be cancelled or renewed? Let’s unpack the numbers and compare Grandfathered to other FOX series.
Grandfathered stars John Stamos as swinging single Jimmy Martino who learns he’s the father of an adult son, Gerald (Josh Peck), and grandfather to Gerald’s daughter Edie (Emelia Golfieri and Layla Golfieri). Paget Brewster plays Gerald’s mother, Sara. Vanessa (Christina Milan) is Edie’s mom. Kelly Jenrette and Ravi Patel also star.
The Grandfathered TV series premiered on September 29, 2015 and earned a 1.49 in the 18-49 year old viewer demographic, with a total audience of 5.337 million. Grandfathered‘s ratings have been dropping slowly but fairly steadily, since then.
By the middle of season one, the 11th episode of Grandfathered, which aired January 12, got a 0.99 in the demo and the audience was down to 2.646 million viewers.
Last week’s April 26 episode “Jimmy’s 50th, Again,” only garnered a 0.61 in the demo with a total audience of 1.782 million viewers.
Over all, as of April 26, the first season of Grandfathered averaged a 0.94 in the 18-49 ratings demographic. Season one of Grandfathered has an overall average audience size of 2.826 million viewers.
Grandfathered is one of 20 FOX TV series we have been tracking during to 2015-16 television season. When ranked from highest to lowest average ratings in the 18-49 demographic, Grandfathered comes in 14th out of 20.
Of the 13 FOX series performing better than Grandfathered 12 have been renewed. The only one which hasn’t is the second best performing series, The X-Files. The X-Files, however is a limited series.
The shows performing even worse in the ratings demo include Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Life, which has been yanked from the schedule and is all but officially cancelled. The other series dragging up the rear at FOX are Sleepy Hollow, Bordertown (which is rumored to be cancelled), The Grinder, the already cancelled Minority Report, and Second Chance (which looks unlikely to get one).
When sorted by total average audience size, Grandfathered rises four spots in the ranking to 10th place, i.e. smack in the middle. Grandfathered has a larger total audience size than some shows that have already been renewed: The Last Man on Earth, Scream Queens, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Bob’s Burgers. All of those renewed TV series, though, outperform Grandfathered in the 18 to 49 year old viewer demo.
Below are TV Guide‘s descriptions for the final two episodes of Grandfathered, season one. Will they be the last? If they are, don’t seem to promise Grandfathered fans any sort of closure.
Season 1, Episode 21
May 3, 2016
The Memorial
Jimmy deals with a painful loss and organizes a moving memorial service; and Sara contemplates taking the next step in her relationship with Craig.Season 1, Episode 22
May 10, 2016
The Cure
In the Season 1 finale, Jimmy and Sara contemplate giving their relationship another chance, but she’s worried about getting hurt, while Gerald ponders an elaborate way to propose to Vanessa.
The last two episodes of Grandfathered, season one, air tonight, and next Tuesday at 8:30pm ET/PT on FOX. If “The Memorial,” and “The Cure,” manage to earn strong enough numbers, perhaps Grandfathered will be renewed for a second season. If the ratings continue to trend down, the show’s last and best hope may be this pretty face.

Never knew this show existed until this week and purchased the season on demand and finished withintwo days. Keep this show going! It’s keeper!
I’m all for this show. I’d take this 100x’s over The Grinder. I love John Stamos & Paget Brewster… they are so sexy together. Plus the toddler twins are just too adorable for words.
I love this show. Granted the first few episodes was a little slow but now there on track. I have to find out what’s going to happen between Jimmy and Sarah. The kiss at the end of last nights episode was the BEST! I would be SO DEVASTATED if it didn’t come back.

Definitely should be renewed. A well written and performed show, so much better than most of the sophomoric shows on TV these days
I really hope it’s not the end! Please renew it! I think the cast and show are great!
