NBC has decided to cancel their low-rated Hannibal TV show. The current third season will be the series’ last.
Based on the Red Dragon novel by Thomas Harris, Hannibal revolves around the early relationship between FBI investigator Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), a forensic psychiatrist who becomes an infamous cannibalistic serial killer. Others in the cast of this thriller series include Laurence J. Fishburne III, Aaron Abrams, Caroline Dhavernas, Scott Thompson, Tao Okamoto, and Gillian Anderson.
The show’s ratings were poor in its first season and they’ve gotten even worse in seasons two and three. The three installments of the current season have averaged a 0.57 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.98 million viewers. Season-to-season, that’s down by 34% in the demo and down by 22% in viewership. Based on the numbers, NBC should have cancelled the series long ago.
In a statement, executive producer Bryan Fuller said, “NBC has allowed us to craft a television series that no other broadcast network would have dared, and kept us on the air for three seasons… Hannibal is finishing his last course at NBC’s table this summer, but a hungry cannibal can always dine again. And personally, I look forward to my next meal with NBC.”
NBC added, “We have been tremendously proud of Hannibal over its three seasons. Bryan and his team of writers and producers, as well as our incredible actors, have brought a visual palette of storytelling that has been second to none in all of television — broadcast or cable. We thank Gaumont and everyone involved in the show for their tireless efforts that have made Hannibal an incredible experience for audiences around the world.”
What do you think? Do you like the Hannibal TV show? Would you have watched a fourth season on NBC or on another channel?
I hope a cable network picks up the series and allows them to have more sex, gore and violence because that seems to work well with people. It’s a shame that regular TV stations are now turning PC or their shows fail miserably. Hannibal was always a show best suited for cable TV so fingers crossed it gets picked up.
Hannibal is actually one of best TV shows on air and the sad fact ratings are low speak loudly about the level of viewer for dramatic television. It is a sad commentary when horrific reality shows like Keeping up with the Kardashians thrive while shows like Hannibal falter. I truly wish someone would fund a television channel for well written thrillers and dramatic television that were not solely tied to ratings. Pipe dream I know but sure would be nice. I was looking forward to seeing Clarice Starling but I guess that is not happening.
Hannibal is the most sophisticated , best written and well acted drama (& sometimes even comedy) on network tv. If it gets cancelled I’m hoping some cable network will pick it up. Never missed an episode!!!
If you you don’t like it, don’t watch it. Of course it is getting cancelled. Its an interesting, thought provoking psychological drama with great acting. People aren’t happy unless their watching the same old laughs (kidding), zombies or cops shooting people. This is just one more good show I have like that is going bye-bye thanks to the no brains out there.
Please don’t cancel the one of few on your station that people consider worth watching! What is left, summer reruns?
Love this show, never missed an episode. The most unique production I have ever seen. Please let the show continue.
Because airing the start of a new season in June is always a good idea…you know when no ones around to watch. Love the show, seen every one
This show is one of the best on all TV. You want 24 hours of “reality” shows. Or something that takes thought to make and also to watch? Talk about the dumbing down of America. Anyone hear of “Dexter”? A show about another serial killer and that was considered quality (which I agree with). Hannibal is beautifully written, filmed and acted. The content is more than about cannibalism. That’s a very shallow way of looking at it. Look at the manipulation, rekationships, betrayal, evil and love and so much more. For Those of you who can’t watch or can’t watch… Read more »
I started out hating this show. I thought it was bloody disgusting and gratuitously gruesome. But then I kept watching and it really opened up for me. I could ignore or fast forward through the really gruesome bits and really pay attention to the characters, particularly Will Graham. I was horrified, but also fascinated. These characters live in a dark world, but at times it’s darkly beautiful, too.
Now I want this show to continue. The third season is my least favorite so far, but I’m still willing to be a part of this journey.
It started out good and now it stinks.Cancel it!!!!!
Please someone pick up Hannibal. My son and I could not wait until the 3rd season started and now you are dropping it. This is 1 of the best shows out there. I watch ea episode 2 & 3 times and & get the chills ea time. That’s how good it is. Each & every character is so unique and phenomenal. What a disappointment NBC. You don’t know what a HUGE MISTAKE you are making but hopefully you will soon find out. Maybe Fox will pick it up. Hopefully not a premium channel that cost extra. Why is it every… Read more »
This is one of my favorite shows. I think if it had more publicity, more people would watch it. I love the intricate dynamics of all the characters… and I’ve read the books. I really want them to talk more about Hannibal’s past, and his sister, and how the monster inside him was created!
i’ve watched the show from day one yet i’m not surprised it was canceled. the episodes of the current season are just too dark and gory, hard to follow and i’m not sure that i’ll continue to watch. i’m not upset at this cancelation like i am about the following, stalker and forever. too bad those shows weren’t given the chance that hannibal got. maybe they would have had they been on NBC.
I agree with what Lisa says. I also loved stalker and forever. Hannibal is gruesome
I agree, Stalker and Forever were two wonderful series. I could not watch Hannibal it made me sick.
Wow , you cant follow a easy plot such as this show then go watch MASH .
This show never had any ads or any notification it even existed . I didn’t know it was around till the 2nd season . When I discovered it was liked it a lot. Also it was on a Friday night when no one watches TV. Sure its a bit gory but the characters are well written . I hope another Network picks it up like Netflix , but they already spent their money on Marvel / Disney , thou a do hope it picked up by someone or have a mini series to complete its ideas and storyline.
I sure hope no one picks up this sick show
Ditto Gail
Do people realize that this is fiction? Why are so many people disturbed by a TV show that is not based on anything but a fictional book series? Its not real gore people!
I saw adds for Hannibal on TV.
