Don’t look for a third season of Helix on Syfy. The cable channel has cancelled the thriller series after two seasons and 26 episodes.
Helix follows a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control who travel to the Arctic. They find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that could decide the future of humankind. The cast includes Billy Campbell, Kyra Zagorsky, Mark Ghanimé, Jordan Hayes, Neil Napier, Matt Long, Steven Weber, Jim Thorburn, and Christina Rosato.
The series debuted in January of 2014 and drew positive numbers for the cable channel. The first season ended up averaging a 0.45 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.39 million viewers.
Syfy renewed it for a second season but the somewhere along the line, lots of viewers seem to have lost interest. The start of season two was down by more than 45% when compared to the series launch.
The numbers got worse as the season progressed and the 13 episodes ended up averaging a 0.17 rating with 560,000 viewers — a season-to-season decline of 60%.
The season (now series) finale aired on April 10th.
What do you think? Did you like the Helix TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled or renewed for a third season? Why do you think so many people stopped watching?
What a waste. I wanted more. Did Julia eventually die? It never showed it so anything could happen, I guess.
A bit surprised. I thought the show was doing well. I admit the second season wasn’t as strong as the first. But it certainly had potential.
Glad I didn’t bother watching more than a few episodes and recorded the rest. Another Select All / Delete series.
I loved helix! both seasons. But , as I talked to friends that watched the show…..they had a hard time with the time change ……when it showed the 30 years in the future and today , and they quit watching cause they were confused. But I couldn’t waite for every messed up ,crazy episode!
I could barely surprise the first season of Helix so I never watched the second season. Simply too much horror for me. Looking forward to the second season of Twelve Monkeys.
WAS the only show I watched on syfy.
Terrible decision syfy.
Not surprised. The first season was interesting and I couldn’t wait to keep on watching. During this second season I forced myself to watch the show, the characters and the story line did not grab me at all.
I was in love with the first season, and talked everyone I know into watching it- totally in love with Hiroyuki Sanada! Second season bit the big one, nothing remotely interesting about it and no Dr Hatake….yeah….nah.
The problems with a lot of these Sy-Fy series es is that they become so complicated that you can’t follow the plot. I did watch both the first and second seasons, but likely wouldn’t have watched a season 3 if that was in the plans. Sy-Fy has had so many good series’s on in the past, that their current schedule doesn’t measure up. They have really been stretching their viewers patience with their far fetched plots. I used to watch Sy-Fy a lot in the past, but hardly ever watch it now. They have deserted a lot of their loyal… Read more »
(SyFy) has created SSOOOO many programs that they’ve stretched themselves too thin. Take a look at how many shows they now have and it boggles the mind.
For those who said they did not wrap up the series they really did as much as they could with limited time. The add on scenes set in 2029 basically told you the major events between 2015 and 2045 – Hatake and Alan created the virus to kill of immortals after Alaria took control of most human reproduction in the population control program by putting the fungus materia into genetically modified food. Alan and Hatake hid Caleb/Soren on the Island since he was the only cure for the virus attacking immortals most likely leading to the downfall of Ilaria. Sarah… Read more »
Expected the series to be cancelled. Ratings as bad as Season 2 was guaranteed it. At least they wrapped up the series with the add on segment showing the future. Season 1 ended fairly strong but between seasons half the viewers did not bother to return. Even then it lost nearly half its remaining viewers. HELIX became a combination of LOST and HOSTEL with its graphic gore and disturbing scenes. Future Hataki going into crazy mode with bodies of his dead wife and son was not a good way to start Season 2. Then he vanished entirely and was only… Read more »
Helix was one of my three shows that I watched religiously (on demand) . The acting was first rate and the stories were creative. The introduction of cult leader Steven Weber made an ominous tone even eerier. What a shame that this got cancelled…I will now go back to The Strain, Tyrant and The Blacklist. This one hurts though as the actors and stories were always compelling…
Same old, same old. Great show, great multiple plot lines, canceled w/o resolutions. No respect for viewers fro SyFy. I will give them the same respect when they ask me to watch a new show. I can see why ratings dropped. The transition to the second season was not a smooth one. I was all WTF! for the first 3-4 episodes but kept the faith and it paid off in a great second season. I guess a lot of others must have just said WTF! and stopped watching. I really loved the way the show used quirky music juxtaposed to… Read more »
IKR?! The “mellow” music made the scenes all the more surreal! It was a difficult transition from first to second season, I agree, but you had to stick to it to get the explanations, as bizarre as they were. I had a hard time picking up the storyline. Maybe they needed to re-air the first season to help transition it to the second. Even then, still loopy. The most mind-bending episode was the Hatake/Julia one. Twisty! How disappointing that they are just leaving it without tying things up. Ugh. I hate that.
Another TV show that I loved and followed has now been cancelled. It’s crazy and while numbers haven’t been great. I still wish they had given the show more time.
They can’t leave it hanging like that! What happened after? How did Soren/Caleb wind up back on the island and WHY?! What happened with him and Dr. Sommers? Too many loose ends to leave it like that! And the last 5 mins of the finale….what??!! OMG…you can’t just leave it at that! Are they crazy over there at Syfy??? Sighs…..the creepy factor kept me coming back for more. That and well, Billy Campbell….need I say more? I liked the show and its quirkiness, weird out-of-place music and odd characters. This so refreshing from all the BS “reality shows” they had… Read more »
I totally agree. It seems to me that network tv is getting rid of all scripted shows and are just making their way to reality TV. That’s why I watch Netflix.
Maybe they should have a time lag on the ratings as some of us don’t like to watch 1 episode at a time. I refuse to let a TV show dictate my time and record everything I watch. It really sucks that some shows are canceled before we watch the current episode.
SyFi has many of the best shows in the last few years but they are canceled before they ripen. Maybe you should go a little slower replacing good series. FWI,I hate the sports but I can see the reasoning, (sort of).
I am there with you t. I record each season and then watch it.
Damn! Another one bites the dust! All the shows I like are getting cancelled. I guess I can’t be surprised it seems like every show I start watching on Netflix is cancelled just like the Witches of East End, Star Crossed the 4400 etc etc
